ESXi underperformance of the r.620 vs R610

All,

I currently run a server R610 (X 5550 procs) and a unit r.620 newly acquired (e5-2650) unit in a vSphere cluster 5. ESXi running the latest version and the latest patches. Dell servers up-to-date with respect to the firmware of all components. The unit uses internal 15 k SAS R610 leads to host the ESXi hypervisor, while the r.620 uses 2 GB SD cards in mirror for the ESXi hypervisor.

When I migrated some workloads on the new cluster member (r.620), I've seen some of our process execution times increase dramatically. The process performed on a MS SQL 2008 r2 server. When I migrated the VM on the initial cluster member (r610), execution time is back to the normal time.

I went then to face a series of landmarks a test virtual machine that has been migrated back and forth between each Member of the cluster and seen repeatable results that showed that the r.620 was SLOWER than the R610 in terms of CPU and memory benchmarks (using Passmark v7.0). Cluster using the EVC Nahalem mode. I have also conducted tests by removing the VCA mode and was able to get similar results with the R610 being the fastest performer.

I checked all the cores and hyperthreading is enabled. A glance at the guide of best practices for ESXi 5.0 gave anything different in my setup...

Has anyone seen or heard talk about these issues with the r.620 unit, or E5-2650 processors?

Thank you

Elvis

We had the same problem with our new r.620 (2650v2-E5). The performance was well below our old R710 (X 5550).

We could solve the problems of performance and to maintain a good ratio of energy saving dig by adjusting the profile' system settings ' in the BIOS:

  • To access the ESXi 6 via the webclient service

    Greetings,

I'm sorry if I'm just cutting on it, but maybe it's an easy question to answer.

I'm in a very locked down environment and I can not access vSphere windows client (client installation is not allowed on my windows desktop).

I have 5 hosts ESXi 6.0 and I need to deploy vSphere 6 on top of these hosts.  My plan was to go directly to one of the hosts and install vCenter on a virtual machine on that host.

From this point, I would be able to connect to vCenter and build the rest of the environment.

As I don't have access to the Windows client, I have to use the web client to interact with the environment (I would need to connect the host to the first and build vCenter), but given that I have not vCenter or the webclient service installed yet, I see not a way to actually enter the ESXi host using the webclient service.  I know with 5.5, was the order for the installation:

    1.) SSO

    2 web client).

    3. inventory service)

    4.) vCenter Server

But what I would do here with version 6?  Can I run the installer of vCenter and install the web client on my desktop and then use it to access the host to create the environment?

It seems that the windows client really is a must if you want to connect to a host (if you don't have the webclient service installed).  Is this fair?

There is no webclient for administrering a stand-alone ESXi host, only the Windows client.

However the vCenter device built in deployment tool to deploy a vcenter device you don't need customer C sharp, but you must be able to install the plugin for integration of customer.

If you need a Windows vCenter server you need to deploy the fashion old way

  • How to upgrade an ESXi host from the command line

Sorry for bumping an old thread. I'm new to ESXi. I'm under ESXi 5.5 build 1331820 and I am at a loss how to apply patches.

Preferably, I would like to apply all the relevant patches through console (SSH). Can someone give me pointers how to do this? Thank you

Moderator note (a.p.): branched to a new discussion of software patch to version 1331820?

    Welcome to the community,

on how to patch a ESXi host from the command line, please see for example http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2008939

Basically download you the latest hotfix package and install it using the command esxcli . That said, please make sure that your hardware is supported by the patch that you want to apply (see http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl). You can also do before installing the patch, is to do a "dry - run" to know what . VIBS are removed and which are installed by the patch. To do this add -dry - run to the esxcli command line.

In the case where something goes wrong, you can revert to the previous state by pressing SHIFT-R , while the ESXi hosts begins the start-up.

  • ESXi 5.5 / the will of StarWind disk number

A ESXi connected to StarWind v6 via iSCSI MPIO.

Upgrade to v8 Starwind.  Update went well spent... all the existing disks/objectives remained and ESXi host was all mounted volumes.

At the same time to upgrade, I wanted to change the RAM cache in Starwind for each of my virtual devices.  Unfortunately Starwind have has this built in existing devices. I found reference to edit the .swdsk file to set the cache.  However my upgraded Starwind did not use this virtual disk format.

Then... I deleted an existing virtual device without deleting the associated image file.  Re-created Starwind device/virtual disk.  Joined an existing image file.  Re-connected to ESXi iSCSI.  I first tested on a small LUN first.  Everything seemed fine.  So I did it for all my devices StarWind.  Then following problems restart ESXi.

No mounted volume.  Determined through playing that ESXi has been seeing them as snapshots.  If I rode without re-signing volume disappeared again on restart.

So I went through the process via SSH

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1011387

    esxcfg-volume -l

    esxcfg-volume -r VMFS_UUID|label

Completely removed all existing references to "old" volume names

Renamed all the Volumes mounted in the snap-* my original name

    Re-recorded all the machines.

Finally the volumes mounted after restart ESXi.

This was a lot of unnecessary work that I do not want to repeat and want to know more about why it happened.  It is perhaps a matter for the people of StarWind...

What exactly has changed with the "volume" of ESXi clearly I generated a new Starwind device but to an existing image file.  The real VMFS volume inside this image file has not changed at all.  What is happening at the level of the iSCSI that this was seen as different to ESXi?

    Thank you.

    Hello

When ESXi connects to the iSCSI READ it identifies using several signs

    1 size

    2. the seller ID

    3. product ID

    4 UUID

    5. ID series

If the foregoing does not match the original device, you will get a situation as you describe in the original post.

I think it happened when you were adding the StarWind LU to the management console.

You have selected the img file and StarWind first threw a warning, saying that it is an existing device. If you chose to use the img file anyway, resigned StarWind device by generating a new UUID and Serial code.

In the future, please use the swdsk header when adding previously created devices preventing the UUID and change of serial ID.

  • File deleted on esxi system after the restart with the last patch (256968)

    Hello

Since I installed latest patch on esxi (build 256968), every time that I reboot server esxi, I lost the files in / opt and the .ssh folder.

Before this patch, the files were still there on reboot.

Do you have any idea what's going on? Is this a new limitation of free esxi?

I ' am, using this file to VM backup with ghettovcb and everything works fine (until I reload )

    Thank you.

This is provided with ESXi, there is difficulty set of files, including any of the local VMFS volumes that are kept at the restart. There is a cronjob schedule that works for the configuration files important backup automatically at a local bootbank, which is then loaded after the next reboot, all files created by the user and most likely using the Busybox does not support console will not survive a restart by default.

If you use the ghettoVCB.sh - Free alternative for backup of VMS to ESX (i) 3.5, 4.x & 5.x , recommendation would be to store the script and all relevant files is the local VMFS volume or on the shared storage (NFS, iSCSI/FC SAN) volume.

There is a script in "/sbin/auto-backup.sh" that you can actually run to see what files are being backed up, you can easily modify this script to save additional files which will ensure that they are saved on a restart.

  • ESXi directly on the internet?

    All,

First off I understand the need for firewalls and what not. There is a business need for it.

Does anyone put ESXi directly on the internet? What kind of exploits have been seen? When I say put live on the net, I also talk about management. Ive expressed my displeasure with that idea but I've been invited to explore more.

    Thank you!

Virtual NETWORK adapter on the public network is ok, if it's on different vSwitch management.

  • ESXi connection to the Windows SFU NFS data store

We plan to install 3 servers ESXi with virtual machines hosted on local.  A backup script align the images and move the *.vmx and *.vmdk to a NFS data store located in separate facilities which are connected via fiber.  All connections are links of 1 G.  The NFS data store will be hosted on w2k3 with SFU (Microsoft Services for Unix).

The NFS data store will be a target for cloning and will be located in a building separated for "geographical separation."  I tested with Veema FastSCP (the public beta)... it's ok (30Mbytes/sec).  I assume that the clone process will take about 5 hours - but we can tolerate the performance hit after opening hours.

Question:  Is there a "traps" to know by linking each ESXi server in the same directory NFS exported using SFU?  Perhaps more to the point... no problem with ESXi and Windows SFU?

Before anyone asks... we do this on a 'super-thin budget' (that is to say... $ 0) using existing hardware, otherwise I would have ESX Enterprise and SAN storage!

Some discussions to look at on the performance.

Can I replace the motherboard with a 3rd party, in the same turn?

The Council is a standard size but the front panel wiring is owner.  You will need to do a bit on the rewiring of fly or to replace the case.  Also note that stock heatsink from Dell that it does not fit in a spare parts advice - you will need a new if you change the jury.

Another advantage: If you are replacing the card, you have more a Dell system, which means not activate Windows.   Budget for a copy in the Windows retail if you change the motherboard - you effectively build a new system.  Microsoft won't activate copies of Windows OEM on the boards of spare parts.

Recommendations to replace the power supply, RAM, processor and video?

    I have the 2320 i5, 8 GB of Ram and AMD 6450.

Essentially, you can build a whole new system - if you take this route, reuse, keyboard, mouse, monitor and drives – everything (case, power supply, heater, fans and everything you want to update - is replaced).

Hey guys... Much here on the forums have used the HD 5670 on their units of 300 watt with no problems.
