How to remove these from the installer to automatic updates

Applications, (Norton and McAfee) are notorious for not not upgrade (or uninstalling) itself. We'll see if the removal of the "leftovers" solves the problem.

[You may want to print these instructions for reference offline. If a step said to reboot, reboot.]

1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. After completing some you have a copy of your handy product key, uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate and everything Norton Add ons) via Add/Remove programs.

4 IMPORTANT! -Online activate Windows Firewall immediately after the restart.

NB: Now you're "working without a net": nothing ELSE online (e.g., navigation reading E-mail; cat) until you have finished step #7 below!

5. double-click on the file that you saved in #1 above to run the utility.  DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

6. do a clean install of NIS 2012 (using your product ID, if need be); CF. http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

NOTE: Do NOT activate or install additional modules of Norton (for example, Norton Anti-Phishing) immediately.

7. manually and repeatedly run (Norton) LiveUpdate until you get a prompt "no update more".

8. open Internet Explorer (only!) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 & run the difficulty.

9. IMPORTANT - DON'T SKIP THIS STEP! Open Internet Explorer (only!) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 of => & run fix it by DEFAULT and modes then AGGRESSIVE, ignoring the warnings is NOT RECOMMENDED. [1] [2].

10. restart once again.

11. open Internet Explorer (only!) at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com . Select CUSTOM and scan | Install critical security updates available (e.g., KB254489). If an update of root certificates is listed under the category of updates software optional on the left side of the window of scan results, install it to enjoy greater security of IE8.

NOTE-do NOT install any other updates online software optional , or optional hardware updates. just hide them ("don't show me this update").

Follow all instructions & restart if & when you are prompted to do so.

12. in response to this post with a status report.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1] reject (close) the "Troubleshooting automated" Fix It pop up that appears when you open the Web page and then run difficulty he 50202 (in DEFAULT and modes then AGGRESSIVE) instead. If needed, you can click the difficulty he 50202 & SAVE the download on your desktop, and then run it manually (by DEFAULT and modes then AGGRESSIVE).
[2] full Disclosure: the difficulty operating in AGGRESSIVE mode will remove your update history but not list the updates installed in Add/Remove programs.
