Explorer Windows dies when right-clicking on a file or a drive-even in safe mode

I can right click on the files without any problems, but if I click on a folder or a drive, I receive an error message and the windows Explorer closes.  This happens even when I start in safe mode.   I also ran my antivirus software and it found nothing.

Sounds like windows explore has been corrupted?  I can reinstall it without having to reinstall the entire operating system?

In case anyone else has this problem, I'm letting you know how the problem was solved.  I used the previous restore point and windows Explorer now works as it should.   I had updated to the latest version of Spybot, just before that the problem occurred.  I will try to update Spybot to see if the problem comes back. ;

  • Windows Explorer closes and restarts (?) when I right click on a file photo.

One time, I installed a software to go with a slide scanner. The software changed to the default program for photo files and then proceeds to seize up after that about 12 slides have been scanned. I removed the software, but every time I do a right-click on a file photo, jpeg, gif, bitmap, etc., or try to open the file menu when one is highlighted, close all Windows Explorer Windows and icons in the taskbar and desktop disappear for a while. The last two return after a minute or two, but not all open windows. Other programs such as Internet Explorer or MS Word are not affected.

I suspect that the defective scanner software installed an entry in the context menu. Search for it and delete it using the ShellExView free program:

Right-click accidents are caused by third-party shell extensions. Use the excellent ShellExView tool to isolate the problem. For more information, see "Method 2" section right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menus management.

  • Right-click on any file or folder in Windows Explorer causes closing.

    Hello.
is my windows: XP SP3 (with the latest updates)

whenever I do a right-click on any file or folder in Explorer, display this error:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I can't do any process on my files (rename, delete, copy, paste,...)

    error report contains:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512 ModName: unknown
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

This looks like a problem with the Extension of Shell.

To resolve, download the freeware "ShellExView".

When you run it, it will give the list all extensions of shell on your computer.  You start by selectively the deactivation and activation of extensions until you find the (s) which is causing your problem.  Start by turning off all non-Microsoft (right click on a line-> disable) extensions and see if your problem persists.  If it isn't, then re-enable the disabled in small groups until you narrow down which is causing your problem.

  • Explorer crashes when right click on a drive letter

I use windows 7. I have 2 ssd drives and a HARD drive. I alos have DRUNK drives on USB ports. I really need a way to see how much free space on the disks.

    Thank you

    Moved from feedback

    Hi Beakbryce,

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community forums.

I see from the description of the problem that you are unable to check how much free space there are on a drive and an Explorer Windows locks when you try to check the same.

I imagine the inconvenience that you are experiencing. We are here to help and guide you in the right direction.

To provide the proper resolution, that I would need more information on your side.

    1. do you receive any error messages?

    2. did you of recent changes on the computer before this problem?

This behavior can occur if the there is a conflict between third-party applications, or if there is no corrupted system file.

    Method 1:
Let's start with the computer in Mode safe start to check if the problem occurs in Mode without failure. If the problem does not occur in Mode safe, then you can try to set up your computer in a clean boot state to find what startup item or service is causing the problem.

    Step 1:
To restart in Safe Mode follow the steps.

    Startup options (including safe mode)

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

If the problem does not occur in Mode safe mode, and then try to perform the clean boot.

    Step 2:
To perform Clean boot follow the procedure below.

By setting your boot system minimum state helps determine if third-party applications or startup items are causing the problem.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or Windows 7:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After the boot minimum troubleshooting step, follow the "How to reset the computer to start as usual after a clean boot troubleshooting" section in the link provided to return the computer to a Normal startup mode.

    Method 2:
If the problem persists, I suggest that you run SFC [System File Checker] scan on the computer that could scan all protected files to verify their versions to verify if there is any changes made to the files and if there is no corrupt files. And will replace them with the correct version.

  • Windows Explorer hangs if I right click on an application or a shortcut.

I have Win7Professional 64-bit. When I right click on a file or application Windows Explorer crashes saying there is error of C ++ Runtime library. I tried to remove all components C++ and re-setup, clean boot and turn off all the components and reloading slowly, start etc and still the problem persists. I've seen several solutions to the widespread enough question, but none have worked for me. Any ideas?

I tried running the command prompt SFC, but it says that I don't have administrative rights, what I'm doing.

I found the keyboard shortcut for the file properties and create a shortcut can be a bit tedious but not insurmountable. It is the reflex of right-click on 'something' and zap, Windows Explorer crashes and restarts with limited functionality.

As it is a problem for a number of users, anyone got something "simple"? I can't be disturbed in the reinstallation of Windows and the hassle or redo all applications, etc.

    Grateful for any help.

    Barry Connell

The problem could be a problematic third-party context menu Manager part.

The following link has some info and download ShellExView you can use to selectively disable third-party management context menus to find a problem:

    http://WindowsXP.MVPs.org/slowrightclick.htm

You can try to disable all managers of context menus not Microsoft and then, if the problem resolves to reactivate them one at a time to see what the problem was.

Run ShellExView [1] and disable all NON-Microsoft extensions. If the error are gone select 3rd party addons 1 followed by the other to detect the addon that causes the problem.

  • What happened to the option to send a file or a folder to another folder under the options "send to", when I right click on a file?

I'm running Windows 7 Pro.  On my last machine, I was able to right click on a file or folder, go down to "send to" and one of the options was 'send to folder '.  Now, this option is not available.  Is it possible that I can get this option in the options for places I can send a file or folder, or is it simply not an option in this version of Windows?  I am sure that I always had this option when I upgraded my old laptop to Windows 7 Pro.

Which is now only in leModifiermenu Windows Explorer, move to folder... / / copy to folder...
