Extending Apple WiFi

I have a base station extreme in my basement and then 3 units Airport Express in my whole House connected through ethernet cables, creating a network of 'Roaming '. (I think that's the right terminology).

Each express uses the same SSID and password as the main base station and I am able to work transparently throughout the pipe and I have good coverage throughout.

I'm now trying to get coverage outside in the garden in a hut that I just built. When my iPhone is connected to the network, and I walk outside in the backyard in the cabin I can just about keep generally the smaller 'bar' on the wifi signal but it is very poor and spotty coverage. If I disable the wifi on my phone and turn it back on, I usually don't even 'see' my network SSID when you are in the shed in the back yard.

I have power in the cabin but no Cat5. I would get another AE and plug it into the cabin and extend my wireless network.

I read about it online, and from the Apple Web site, it reads as follows:

«If another extended ➋ terminal of Wi - Fi is placed between primary ➊ Terminal Wi - Fi and the prolonged use of Wi - Fi base station ➌, the ➌ extended station basic Wi - Fi will not allow clients join.» "Any extended Wi - Fi base stations must be direct scope of station primary base of Wi - Fi.

If my ' primary WiFi base station is my main Airport Extreme base station in my basement, so this could be a problem because I do not think I would choose the (however weak) signal in the shed of the base station, I think I have pick up one of the AE (hard wired) units I have in my kitchen (close to the backyard).» However, if because my AE units are hard wired via Cat5, and I have a "mobile network" should be ok "extension" my network with a new AE in the shed, assuming that it can 'see' some of the signal?

My apologies for the convoluted message. TIA (thanks in advance)

The example you cited applies to networks wireless extended.

You cannot have a base > AE wireless > wireless AE setup as it comes to multiple jumps wireless.

In theory, if you have a roaming network, each Airport Express device should be broadcasting from the main network and is connected via a cable, so you should be able to extend the wireless network out to the backyard using an another AE, as long as it is in the range of one of the devices on the network roaming, i.e. your AE kitchen current.

The good thing is that you can test it before buying an another AE as long as you don't mind having to adjust the configuration of one of them temporarily.

Take one of the Airport Express units around the House (i.e., not one that is closer to the backyard), reset the default device, and then use Airport utility to re - set up to extend the wireless network. It in the House at the moment so that the unit is without any doubt in the range of the network. Once you have configured and tested (e.g., is light green), take it out to the cabin, plug it in and see what happens.

I bought and set up the Airport express to extend a wifi signal in my house. I do not have an airport extreme as a base station - I thought I could use the express to extend the signal from my router/modem from verizon. Is this possible?

Turned it "on" now, I don't see the express network as an option in my combo network - so assuming that it will seek to expand, what's the problem with it only shows not not in the drop-down list?

The AirPort Express only wireless may extend over a network that is provided by another router from Apple.  As such, it cannot extend wireless signal router left 3rd.

Another way of saying the same thing, it's that if you want to extend wireless network using a router from Apple, you will need two routers Apple.

If you can connect the AirPort Express Terminal to your main router using a wired Ethernet cable connection, permanent, then the Express can be configured to provide additional coverage of wireless signal in this way.

  • How to extend a WiFi router network not Apple using Airport Extreme and Express?

My cable ISP company just gave me a new modem/router - a DG of Arris - 2470. For the last two years I used a cable modem independent older with a connected Airport Extreme (both located on the ground floor) and an Airport Express station on the floor as an Extender. I was very happy with the power of the signal around the House.

Since his arrival to the Arris router my signal has become very low to the floor. I would use my two Apple devices to extend/boost my network, but do not know how to do this.

    Thank you!

    Basically, you have two options:

    1. (Best overall performance of the network) Connect the extreme and Express on the Arris Ethernet gateway device and configure all for a traveling-type network. This would require an Ethernet connection between all routers that can be accomplished by either using Ethernet cable or the use of mains adapters.
    2. (The overall performance of the adequate network) Simply connect the extreme to the Arris Ethernet, then extend the extreme using the Express.

Which of these do you prefer?

  • Airport Express does not extend WiFi range

OK, I posted a long time will cost about an airport older Gen Express not extending my wifi range when implemented to extend (wireless) and connected to a network of Apple (Airport Extreme). No solution, so I gave up.

Still frustrated by the lack of a strong wifi signal to my back door / Garden (it is a small house!), I bought a new Express and set it up again to extend my current network, placed it on my window sill back room (where I get a pretty good wifi signal on my iPhone and iPad), but about 6 feet of him, the other side of the glass in my garden I get a flicker of 1-2 bars the signal strength that is de-energized intermittently.

I get no significant (or even vaguely reasonable) increase in force wifi when I approach from the Express, but increase next to the extreme.

Or should I put either the express until properly (I'm sure I'm) or I am fundamentally misunderstand the term "extend a wireless network. Alternatively, I bought 3 years 2 defective Express apart.

    Can anyone help?

    See you soon.

You have a handy Mac laptop? If so, we can run tests to understand the current quality of the signal at each location where you want to have a Wi - Fi access. If all goes well, we can find better place to place your Express extension for your goals of networking.

  • express problem airport works as a wired wifi Extender

I have TW cable for internet in bridge mode and not as a DHCP server.  This is directly related to the port WAN to a time capsule extreme Airport (1-2 years).  The time capsule has a link to 16 port 10/100 netgear switch to one of the LAN ports.  About 3 weeks ago, I added 2 new Airport Express to expand the wifi of my very large House.  I ran the hard lines to the Airport Express as well.  Each express is set to bridge mode and just to extend the wifi network.  The extreme time capsule is the DHCP server.  Everything works fine as long as the couple declares itself to the extreme to the wifi, but this does not solve my problems of scope and speed on the other side of the House that expresses it is installed to cover.

Problem: When it expresses the airport is not connected I get a ping void 5ms from a computer on the local network to express it and extreme.  Once I Plug one of them in the cable system my time to ping for all devices are very erratic.  From time to time they are in the range 1-10ms, but more often they are in the range of 1-2 seconds and exhale.  Once, I disconnect or hard of the line time to ping back to normal within 5 seconds.

Troubleshooting attempted so far: even once, I connected one or the other of expresses it to the hard line the problem occurs.  Disconnect it and connect the other the same thing.  Connect them directly to the Airport extreme still same thing.  Connect the express directly to a PC and run ping test, void 1ms response times and no change for the rest of the devices.  Ethernet connected to the WAN port of expresses it instead of the LAN port same question.  Repunched and re made the end of the cable used to one of them, same problem.  Called Apple and they told me it should work, and provided with additional troubleshooting.

Firmware on all the devices have been updated about 3 weeks after I got them stable on wifi.  Unfortunately I do not have the written down version, but they are all on the same version now.  All devices have a green light on them when just using wifi to talk to the extreme.  When wired in airport utility devices drop the GUI are available intermittently and back.

Whats to test I can think of to the left: replace the extreme airport time capsule.  Replace expresses it.  Wipe off the network completely and start over from scratch with a factory reset complete.

Any help would be appreciated, I am amazed as to why it does not work.

Each express is set to bridge mode and just to extend the wifi network.

And this... extend the WiFi network... is the problem.  When the Express is configured to "extend a wireless network", it waits a connection without wire of the main router. When an Ethernet signal is applied, this translates a huge feedback loop blocking, network.

Start over and do a hard reset on each of the AirPort Express devices

Then for the Setup, use a short piece of spare Ethernet cable... any length will do... and plug it between a LAN port <>- on AirPort Extreme on the "O" WAN port on the AirPort Express Terminal

Don't forget to make the Ethernet connection before you try to implement the Express. In this way, the "Wizard" will pick up the Ethernet connection and apply the correct settings for the Express installation.

Use "Wizard" Apple's Installation in AirPort Utility to configure things. When you do so, you will notice that the final configuration screen will indicate that the AirPort Express is set up to "extend with Ethernet', who must confirm that the correct settings apply to the Express.

The first Express is now properly configured. It turned off and move it to the remote location where it is needed. If your Ethernet cables and the Ethernet switch works correctly, so too the Express will work properly.

Implement the second Express exactly the same way as the first, except him give a different device... as Express2 name, for example... to keep things straight.

  • Network: 2 routers Apple broadcasting separate wireless networks; one (Xfinity/Comcast) cable modem

Hello community!  Need help, I want to use two routers to establish two separate wireless networks on a cable modem connection.  I searched for my answer and see some other threads on this topic, but all are either a bit too technical for me, are incomplete on the answers to my questions - and all seem to be locked.  I have also searched YouTube and only see videos to extend a network with two routers - not my goal.  So here is a long, but a detailed post on what I need someone help with - thank you very much in advance if anyone can all small-not me-I hope it will be useful to others in the future.

The program installation/hardware: I have internet Comcast/Xfinity that runs to a Motorola surfboard cable modem (SB6141).  I also have two routers apple - a Time Capsule from Apple AirPort (to end 2013) and a new (2016) AirPort Extreme.

Purpose: This is what I need--I need two separate wireless networks.  Before going further, by using the guest account and 5 GHz of a single router isn't an option for me.  I need to have both wireless networks separate (one of each router), do not talk to each other, or allow access between the two - the only is that they share the Comcast internet gateway.

My plan is to have the cable modem Surfboard connect to airport Time Capsule, which will then connect to AirPort Extreme (even if it could be reverse - no difference, except that the data that I show below comes from the time Capsule, which is currently connected to the modem cable).

To read the previous discussions, it seems that the starting point would be: modem router #1 Ethernet WAN, then a router cable #1 LAN Ethernet to the Router #2.

First issue of clarification - the connecting cable should go to the Ethernet WAN port on the Router #2 or a LAN Ethernet port?

Now that the first easy question is the road, I need help to configure two routers connected to allow two separate networks.  A lot of discussions about the positions of static IP addresses, cascade, etc..  I need specific help with AirPort Utility on what to change on what router.  It seems obvious that the settings under the 'Internet' and 'Network' tabs are those who need to set - the 'wireless' tabs simply treats the name of the wireless network and settings - these, at least I can understand!

I'll organise this tabbed - here go us.

First of all, the "Internet" tab/window Airport utility. Here are the options:

Connect using: Router #1 has currently DHCP (which I think is OK?) What should it be set to Router #2?

This tab lists also the current address in IPv4, the (255.255.254.0) subnet mask and the router address.

It has grayed out information in the boxes for the DNS servers; Name of domain and DNS IPv6 servers.  At the bottom of the window, there is an IPv6 Internet WAN address listed.

If I click on the "Internet Options" button at the bottom of the window, it takes me to the 'Internet Options' window. Here, there are various IPv6 information - it seems that I can choose the configuration of IPv6 and the IPv6 mode using the drop down boxes/selections were also chosen.  There is also a checkbox 'Enable IPv6 connection sharing'. Are the current settings for these for Router #1: configure IPv6: automatically; IPv6 mode: Native; and check/yes to enable sharing of IPv6.

Next up, the 'Network' tab utility AirPort/window.

Here, there is a drop-down menu "Router Mode", a DHCP range listed, and the ability to add or remove reservations DHCP and Port settings.  The DHCP range listed for Router #1 is 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200.  There is currently no reserves DHCP or specified Port settings.  Finally, there is a checkbox to the bottom to "Activate the access control" - it is not currently checked/enabled.

If I click on the 'Network Options' button at the bottom of the window, it takes me to the "Networking Options" window Here I have areas of entry to specify the DHCP lease duration, can specify the DHCP IPv4 range, as well as part of the extended DHCP IPv4 comments.  There are checkboxes: enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol. Select the host by default (with input if selected text box); Enable the IGMP Snooping; Block incoming IPv6 connections; Allow the Teredo Tunnels; and allow inbound IPSec authentication.

For this window, here is the current settings on the Router #1:

DHCP lease is 1 day; Beach DHCP IPv6 is 10.1.2 to 200; Hosts IPv4 DHCP Range is 172.16.42.2 to 200.  The following check boxes are enabled/checked: enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol. Block incoming IPv6 connections; And allow inbound IPSec authentication.

Who can help me? What parameters, if all do I need to change the #1 router?  How to set up router #2 to make a second wireless network?

Purpose: This is what I need--I need two separate wireless networks.  Before going further, by using the guest account and 5 GHz of a single router isn't an option for me.  I need to have both wireless networks separate (one of each router), do not talk to each other, or allow access between the two - the only is that they share the Comcast internet gateway.

What you really need is a combination router / Ethernet switches that s supports VLANdedicated. Given that Apple routers do not, at best, you can potentially get the results that you are looking for, but at a performance cost. In other words, you can have two separate WiFi networks where clients connected to a network can not 'see' those related to another and both routers will always provide access to the Internet through Comcast modem. Note: Arris / Motorola SB6141 isn't a gateway device. Instead, it's a simple modem. A gateway is a router modem combination.

To do this, should do the following:

    • The Time Capsule (TC) would need to be directly connected to the modem using an Ethernet cable. This base station would remain in its default configuration of the router. In other words, the router Mode (in AirPort Utility) would establish: DHCP and NAT.
    • AirPort Extreme would be directly linked to TB by Ethernet. The cable must be connected to one of the LAN ports on the TC on the WAN port to the extreme. It must also be configured as a router. However, there are differences in the extreme:
      • Use a different name to the Wi - Fi network.
      • Use another range of IP DHCP address. By default, Apple base stations use IP addresses in the 10.0.x.x range. I suggest that you set the base station of the second on 192.168.x.x range.

There is a major drawback with this configuration. The second base station will be in a State of "Double NAT". Although this "separating" the two networks on different subnets, this condition is not very effective and connected to this network of customers will get lower throughput performance. There is no way around it and it is not recommended.

First of all, the "Internet" tab/window Airport utility. Here are the options:

Connect using: Router #1 has currently DHCP (which I think is OK?) What should it be set to Router #2?

    The two should be: DHCP.

This tab lists also the current address in IPv4, the (255.255.254.0) subnet mask and the router address.

These leave it as what. The TC is information of IP address of the modem. The extreme, he'll get the TC.

It has grayed out information in the boxes for the DNS servers; Name of domain and DNS IPv6 servers.  At the bottom of the window, there is an IPv6 Internet WAN address listed.

    These leave it as what.

Unless your ISP provides your IPv6 service, change the IPv6 configuration option to: 'Link-local only' on two base stations.

Router mode should be: DHCP and NAT to two base stations. Ignore the DHCP reservations and Port settings for now. Let the current DHCP range for the TC. Change the DHCP range for extreme for: 192.168.1.2 a.200. At this point do not access control for each base station.
