External backup drive is de-energized regularly

Hello

I use a network and wifi Time Capsule backup 4 separate computers. Some connect to the drive internal TC, some on a 4 TB external drive connected by USB to the TB. Once records have been chosen through the Time Machine preferences panel, everything works fine. I have exactly the same configuration for our office machines.

Here's the problem: after some time, Time Machine stops to find the external drive. You can always climb through the Finder, but just TM will not be able to access them, as if she had been disassembled. Previous discussions with Apple revealed that the side of the power of the time Capsule may be a little light to drive an external drive at all times. As a result, I replaced the external drives by power units 3.5 inches. The result is much more stability, but I still have the question every two weeks, the problem reoccur. The only cure is to physically pull on the on the TC power cord and restart. After that, you are sure for a while...

Measures of prevention/bugs/suggestions?

PS: the TC is an older model (model square 1 TB), but works well. Same thing in the office.

Tell me the exact model of your TC for 1 TB could be GEN 1, 2 or 3. The number of A1xxx down is what I need.

Your problem may be also problems with Mac OS with DNS... what operating system running your Mac...?? They are all the same? Is the problem in all Macs exactly at the same time?

IMHO, the TC is a lot a host device... and is not reliable enough for the office... leaving that aside... 2 weeks is actually not bad for routers these days apple... the last firmware was not as reliable as some previous ones... especially on old hardware.

What you are experiencing is reported fairly widely... There is nothing that I can suggest to solve this... The question is drive interface USB is just not as reliable as the internal SATA interface.

This drive USB/s are you running... I'm actually test Touro deskpro now to see how long he stays standing... So far the test has not been well, but I play a lot with network to answer questions. So I'll restart the test now... I would be happy if he stayed a few days to be honest.

What I would say is

1. with the help of a USB hub... I know that you use a hard drive powered... but we've seen the best reliability through a hub.

2. If you have not get out of the car is not recognized... disconnect and reconnect using the player? Or have you restart the TC?

3. try with 7.6.1 firmware instead of later.

4. my last suggestion is to open the TC and the swap disk for a larger... 4 TB although you probably should also replace the power supply that is not profitable.

5 buy a Synology NAS very superior to the joint installation of TC and USB use.

I need to get an external backup drive for my PC, but do not know how to do in this regard. I've seen most are very Exspensive. Someone told me to get Seagate? Is - this right or which is a good thing?

... Someone told me to get Seagate?

Seagate is trustworthy and has been for a long time. I also like WD (Western Digital).

... I've seen most are very Exspensive...

The 'expensive' is subjective. The external drives that I've seen recently are <70 bucks="" per=""> terabyte. You can pay more for the bells and whistles of an external box which was dazzled, and you might get a player with a better fault tolerance.
To say that males 70 from the perspective of my point of view, thirty years ago I paid $ 1,800 for a 160MB HARD internal disk.
  • How can I reset Windows Media Player to use songs on my external backup drive instead or in addition to the songs on my desktop with Windows Vista Edition basic hard drive family?

How can I reset the Player Windows Media in Windows Vista Home Basic to use the songs on my external backup drive instead of (or in addition to) the songs on my desktop hard drive?  Currently, the Media Player library indicates that the hard drive (C:\) is my only option of disks to use for sources of songs.

Basically, I want to have Media Player external drive for all the songs from research and build his library on this disc instead of on the C:\ drive.
My problem is that the songs are hogging too much space on my hard drive, so I want to move to my external drive to backup instead, but Media Player will not access it.  I saw an option in Media Player to add a song to a different drive to the library whenever I play a song of this player, but that would require me to play all the songs moved one at a time, which is not practical, and which would not solve my problem because Media Player could still be maintaining the library on my HDD to say.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

Hello. When I import my pictures on an external drive, a card reader, I always save the photos to a second external drive. How can I get rid of the folder that contains the date of importation on the backup drive? (I don't have this problem with the original disc) I would like that the two disks in the mirror of the other.

I would like that the two disks in the mirror of the other.

This is not an option for the second copy, unfortunately. You can change the target directory manually.

  • With the help of an external backup drive

Hi, I have stored all my Lightroom images in an external drive and have also saved them in a second external hard drive. Only the Lightroom Catalog is currently stored in the internal drive, it will be saved in another external drive in the near future.

I have a question; What happens if my external hard drive fails. How can I access Lightroom images from the external hard drive to backup. Could someone please indicate the steps I have to take. For more information, two external drives are synchronized using free software Allway Sync.

    Thanks to you all.

Any ideas would be wonderful / thank you!

If you use the standard windows backup feature, you need to backup to the hard drive first.

then copy it to the drive external hard usb.

in the future, you will need to copy archive hard disk in order to restore.

  • Win 7: cannot access my external backup drive origin

    Hello

I use 500 GB external drive USB3 (WDP) Western Digital passport as my backup disk

At first, I backed up my OS Win 7, on the new PC, I could find my WD E drive easily whenever I plug it as it's the only drive.

After that, I used WD passport to backup Win XP from another PC with the size of the 25 GB drive only.

The backup software has created a new drive for me G

After the WIN XP back, when I plug the WDP to the new PC Win 7, I can only access the G drive and E drive where to save the Win 7 OS. All new, the backup cannot be done to drive G and not e.

For your information, I couldn't have any problem starting Win 7 of the WDP. The Win 7 OS backup disc E seems to be hidden somewhere.

Can I know how to change the default drive to drive E to the future back to the top of the documents?

    Thank you

  • Backup external hard drive

I recently bought a computer with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I attached an external hard drive to it. I want to keep the clean C drive with only the OS and programs held on this subject. The external hard drive contains files of data and images. I have attached a second external hard drive to the computer. I want to be able to plan a backup from the first disk to the second external drive, but the backup and Recovery wizard seems to allow only a backup of the drive C. is there something that I am missing in the wizard? Or is there something else I can do for my first external backup drive?

    Thanks for the help!

    Hi rdenn_58,

    Thanks for posting your request.

The back up files Wizard, included in Windows Vista Home Basic Edition, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista professional, Windows Vista business and Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, allows you to save your files and data from an external hard drive, CD, DVD, network location and also a secondary hard drive. Although there is no option to schedule a backup to an external drive to a second external drive using the Back Up Files Wizard.

To copy or move files from one external drive to another, you can use the following steps:

You can create a backup of the files on a CD or DVD before you copy or move files.

To copy the files from the first disk to the second external drive, you can use Windows Explorer by going to: start > click computer > double click on the drive letter for the first external drive and then copy the files / folders that you want to back up, and then paste the second external disk drive by opening a second window of the computer. You can also drag and drop files from the first disk to the second external drive using Windows Explorer.

  • Adding images on external hard drive

How update/add photos to disk external drive I put in place just for the pictures?   What should I back up my library of photos once again? Looking to add new photos.

Is the hard drive external backup drive for the photo library on your system disk?

To add new pictures from the backup copy, you need backup software that can perform incremental backups, just like Time Machine for your complete Mac.

Cloning for example tools like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper can update a backup of a file or a full player and simply add the changes.

  • Something the occupation of space on my backup drive

I have a Seagate 250 gig external backup drive.  Once a week I backup data files with the Windows backup of my hard drive on this disk.

When I look at the backup drive in the right Windows Explorer pane or in a utility graph in autonomous areas, only about 57 GB of that drive shows as being used.  (In Solution Explorer, the hidden files are set to display).

Yet when I look in properties, Camembert indicates that 207 concerts are used and only 43 concerts are free.  I had this situation for a short time after I started my backups.  It seems that something is eating about 150 GB of space on my hard drive and I can't.  I see that there are 14 GB to $RECYCLE. BIN but that is not enough to explain the missing 150 GB.  Any thoughts?

Yes, Vista will create a new folder $recycle.bin if you delete it. The Vista Forums tutorial gives more details. You may not even need to reboot, just refresh the desktop.

The Recycle folder was the trash in XP and earlier systems. So, have you used this car with the two systems? If you no longer use XP, I don't think that there will be no harm to remove it. I'll think about it and see if something happens.

  • Lightroom CC - edition in the external editor with images located on the external hard drive problems

I have recently moved most of my image containing folders on external hard drive. In general, everything works smoothly in Lightroom (running latest CC). However, if I try to use an external editor of in Lightroom, I managed opening image in Photoshop CC if it is chosen. However, if I try to edit in a NIK Collection programs (i.e. Viveza 2) or affinity Photo I get error messages. The copy of Tiff is generated within lightroom, but at the spearhead of the external editor the following messages are met...

    • Viveza 2 - 'News file. Plist could not be opened"
    • Photo of affinity - "'could not open the file - / Volumes/4Tb iMac/2015-10-20-202036/Macintosh of the castle of my book 2 Backup/Backups.backupdb/Neil HD/Applications/Adobe Illustrator CS5/Plug-ins.localized/Photoshop Filters.localized/Unsharp Mask.aip/Contents/Resources/he.lproj/InfoPlist.strings the file type is not supported.". However, if I move the folders containing images of problem on my desktop (iMAC 27 2015) in Lightroom external editor command change... works very well. The images open with Nik Collection and Photo of affinity and save in Lightroom when save. Everyone knows about this problem? And if you have, is there a resolution?

    Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

    Neil

Looks like I solved my problem with Lightroom. I disassembled my external backup drive, but upheld the disk external drive containing the photos up and then restarted my mac. After the reboot, I open Lightroom and chose the image on an external drive for mounting in affinity Photo and Collection of Nik. Both image successfully opened in editors. I reassembled the backup drive and rebooted time machine and repeated the same opening picture in external editors. Once again, works great. Have no idea where the original problem. Looks like a bad path was stored in a config somewhere file.

  • Movement on external hard drive lost previews.

    Hello

    Ref: Lightroom 5.7 [991162] on Win-7 Ver.6.1 [7601]

When I import photos LR creates intelligent previews.

To free up disk space, I moved files on an external drive. This was done inside LR by doing drag (subfolders) to C:\... \Lightroom\yyyy to E:\... \Lightroom\yyyy.

Now, when the external drive is disconnected, the preview/thumbnails are gray. I need to connect to find missing photos.

I understand that LR keep thumbnails in the catalog.

    What I failed to do?

    Thank you.

It looks like your work and external backup drives shared drive letters. This is a problem common when you use several external drives, USB drives and card readers, etc. who are often deleted. This can be corrected using letters M well that Z rather than E and F. You will have to reconnect your 'work' inside LR disc after you assign a new drive letter, as shown below. The backup drive should not be visible or accessible from the inside of the module LR library for obvious reasons. This should fix the problem you are experiencing.

How to assign a static on a USB drive letter in Windows 7

  • How do you find the photos processed by LR on a backup drive?

    Hello

I treated my photos from an external drive of their import in the LR catalog. Since then, I made a copy of the photos of the external drive using Carbon copy software clone. How can I ask LR to find these original files on the external backup drive? I don't necessarily have need to access this disk to backup all the time, but my concern is that if something happened to the initial external drive that LR uses then how does LR find backups? I want to just make sure I have a professional and efficient backup routine.

    Thank you very much

    Esther

When you look under folders in the library.

You will see the folders containing the extracts for Images

Right click on the folder (Cmd + click on Mac), then you will see this contextual menu showing in above screenshot.

Once you click on the update folder location, then it opens the browser window.

So that you can navigate to this folder from the external backup drive.

Once you navigate to this folder from the external hard drive, then you can click on Select folder.

Once done, you will see the location of this folder is updated in Lightroom and accomplish this specific folder under this drive.
