external hard drive backup restore, .swm files

I used the backup feature of my Pavilion g7 to make a backup to a hard drive external.  Then I restored the computer to the original factory State.  When I try to restore the backup, I go to the external drive, open the backup folder where the .swm files are stored and click on restore.  It then passes through what seems to ba a restore process (I can see my files on it as it loads) for about 30 minutes.  Subsequently, there is a folder on the desktop named "system recovery files", and I can't do anything with. In the meantime, none of my old files on the computer.  Very strange. have not seen another thread that looks at this issue.  Can not know what does the restore process and where my files are going, if anywhere.

Thank you!

I would add that the disk external drive, the file restore.exe has a date of 2010 on it while the .swm files have a date of 2013. Strange, as in other posts of reading, it seems all the files created in this backup must have the same date.

Hello

2010 is the date for the program, it won't change, but files of stormwater management are not the same unless they have the same point of restoration/time. Just run like s Adminitrator restore.exe (right click and run as administrator) and must restore it for you filws.

  • How can I make external hard drive, the restore points for windows 7

    Dear experts,
My laptop Dell Studio 1558, pieces of 7,64 edition windows Home premium. I want to use external drive hard/Pen drives to achieve and many restore points. I have seagate Free Agent GoFlex 320GB.andTranscend JetFlash Pendrives 16 GB external hard drive. Is it possible to do in both of these external gadgets, restore points? Please specify the procedures in detail.
    Thank you very much.

We must be clear on what you mean by "Restore Point."

If by a restore point that you refer to the small key files backup made before a system change, it must be stored in the folder System Volume Information hidden on the hard disk the file is actually required, you can't edit this storage point (usually drive c :)). The only option you have is to set the amount of space to reserve for this purpose. Once you have defined, which then restore points are organized on a FIFO basis where when the space is too full for a new restore point the oldest is deposited.

The alternative is going to be an image of the system. This will obviously be very wide for each backup, so if you want to do a number then you consider doing incremental backups. This way to make a complete and regular backup then or event based backup only the files that have changed. These backups are also defined as available points in the system restore utility.

  • How to make a Time Capsule external hard drive backup

Hi I just got a time capsule airport which I backed up on my iMac.  I have an external seagate HD plugged on my mac via USB.  I have a catalog photo large library and adobe lightroom on the external hard drive I use and change almost every day. These files are NOT stored on my computer because they take so much space that I would like to keep the separate external disk.  It was my hope to keep a backup on my time capsule on a regular basis with my backup of the iMac.  I have time machine configured to backup from my mac, and then under options, I have seen the drive seagate showing as excluded.  I removed excluded readers and click Save. However I don't think during backup that he actually saved these files because the capsule still shows as have plenty of available disk space.  When I opened the options again shows seagate always excluded.

so question is can I save the iMac and the external hard drive at the same time?

If this is not the case, what is the work around for this thing saved?

    thnx

The Seagate disk should be in Mac Mac OS extended (journaled)format, also known as HFS +, if you want that Time Machine to back up your Mac.

Do you know how the Seagate drive is formatted?  If it isn't... . Right click on on the icon of the Seagate drive which is mounted on the Mac desktop, and then click read the information. In the window that appears, look for the Format.

What do you see when you check the Format?

I bought an external hard drive Samsung M3 about a year (1 to). I used a lot for about 3 months on my mac and then left it stored until I need it again. I then tried to use it today and for some reason, the format converted to Windows NT (NTFS) file system. Looking at other forums, the only way to change what has been suggested is to erase and format it in NTFS for Mac. However, I have 500 GB of data on what I don't want to erase. Does anyone have any suggestions, or any reason that the format has changed all of a sudden, do my hard drive now ReadOnly cannot think?

  • External hard drive creates folders and files and lose the music I synced to it.

I've been struggling with my 8 GB Clip +, which is the same thing my old 4 GB Clip + has. It creates files SID and incorporate in the album folders. Renamed it with records of the characters of 8 or 9 (alpha and digital) at the beginning of the file name, and some of the music I download does not exist when I disconnect the player and it refreshes. It does this for MP3 AND WMA files, if I use Media Player or Windows Explorer.

I loaded all my WMA files on the internal hard disk (that works absolutely perfect), responsible for MP3s ONLY on the external hard drive and got the same result. The external hard drive has been reformatted, there is no debris of what anyone to spoil things. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

So after spending most of my Sunday with my 8 GB Clip + and its 8GB external drive, I found that the problems mentioned previously disappear if opt you for USB mode MSC. I was then able to transfer MP3 and WMA using Windows Media Player or Windows Explorer. I even got to explore open and hung out and deposited the files in window Media Player sync. Very Cool! Also, when I tried to copy something that she already had, he said that the case was already transferred. Amazing! In the past, it should continue to record the same.

Although I must say that a WMA file problem: some of the music files were not correctly identified and is not 'stick' to the albums they came from. But a search for individual songs revealed they were always there, even if the Sansa could not "identify the album they belong to.

I hope this helps others. At the end of the day, my advice is: If you have an external drive, the USB MSC mode, and you won't have any major problems - just a few small, boring ones.

And thanks for the two of you who responded to my original post. Yes, the player has been on auto-detection mode - not good.

  • How to copy a folder to an external hard drive with the same file on it and have it just add new files instead of replace all old already on there, as well as to add new?

I want to copy a folder to an external hard drive with the file already on it and not having to replace all the files each time. I just want to click and drag the folder to the external hard drive and have it add new files I've added in the folder on my pc over time on the external hard drive. It's annoying to have to replace alllll the files each time.

    Thank you!

A simple way is to use the second copy of Centered.com software. It is reasonably priced and will do exactly what you want. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

  • External hard drive problem (cannot delete files)

I have an external hard drive that I use Windows XP and I am now on Vista 64-bit. I have no problem to access the files on the disk, adding of new files or move files on the hard drive. However, I can't delete the files located on the hard drive. If I right click on the folder or file, the Remove option * literally * does not appear in the menu. I'm on the administrator account (only the account that was created).

The problem may be somewhere around this: if I right click on a file and goto Properties, read-only is enabled. If I disabled it and save, it acts like it is the application in the directory and all its subdirectories. When I return to the properties, it is again read only. I guess that the problem lies somewhere in the present.

Any suggestions? This has been an incredible pain for many months.

    Thank you

    Hello Yuhatn,

Thank you for posting.  Your problem is related to the file ownership.   You will need to change the permissions of the file/folder to be able to remove it.  You can do this by right-clicking on the file/folder and selecting the Security tab.  Once there, you can change the permissions of your account regarding this file/folder.  You may need to do this for all files in a folder to be able to delete the folder.  There is a 3rd party tools that will allow you to add this feature in the right click menu.

Please let me know if this helps you. Zack

  • External hard drive backup photos 1 to another

New to Lightroom. Currently backup total system Mac with Time Machine on 500 GB external drive, but my internal 250GB of HARD drive space decreases due to the large files from Lightroom. Response times get pretty bad too. I read on the forum that I shouldn't use TimeMachine to photos in Lightroom backup, so I'm going to stop doing that.

Only, I have 2000 pictures on Lightroom to date (for most DNG), but plan import 17,000 from iPhoto as soon as POSSIBLE and an another 10,000 of other files, with another 2,000 each year.

I bought two external drives of 1 TB (firewire 800), the intention of moving all the photos on one and save the pictures on the other. (still intending to serve Time Machine backup 500 GB external drive for the rest of the system and data of the iMac). I intend to Garland 3 HDD readers, but what steps in LIghtroom should I take to move and install the new Lightroom backup system? And then, should what cyclic procedures I follow?

I have read many useful Q & as on the forums on specific issues, but "I the novice" Elements, step by step instructions on how to put everything in Lightroom.

iMac24 Mac OS X (10.5.7) 2.16 GHz, INtel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 250GB internal HDD, Canon 9950 scanner, printer Canon IP3400

This warning is quite exaggerated. But in any case, two things you can do to be "safer." one is to export the metadata to image files (select all, Cmd - S on Mac) and another to perform a test on a photo or two. I'm sure all will go well, but better than the easy yourself to 99.9%. In addition, you should have a backup of everything.

I moved photos on and off the external sources and never lost your changes; the originals are still intact in terms of pixels.

  • New hard drive backup restore

I installed a new hard drive after backing up my old one (Snow Leopard) on Time Machine. I can't understand how to restore the backup to the new hard drive.

First install the OS on the new drive.

During the installation process (or just after, I forget exactly), it will offer you the possibility to configure the machine based on a Time Machine backup. Point it at your TM drive and come back in the morning (it will take a long time).

  • The thought of Garland two external hard drive backup

At the present time, due to the size of my photo database (catalogue), I work on an external drive of the company and do not use the hard drive of my computer for storage. I think, for a backup, I should probably pipe another external drive that I have and use it as a backup.

Looking for input on this before you go out and buy a disc, has this logic of common sense?

If you work in this way, I would like to hear about it.

Not seen with USB, but is fairly common with FireWire 400 and 800. In fact, it is the only way to connect several FireWire drives the latest range of MacBook Pro.

  • How to set my time capsule from apple for my external hard drive backup?

I installed a Time Capsule from Apple on my network.  It seems to work very well.  I need to use it to back up my external drive (if possible)

    Can someone give me directions?

    Thank you

If you use Time Machine, open the system preferences pane, click Options, and remove the external drive from the exclusion list. It is not possible for all formats of volume.

If you use a different backup product, see its documentation.

  • I have win xp SP3 installed on my PC. I use several external hard drives to store video files. How can I make sure that they maintain the same drive letter, every time that I connect them?

All these hard disks are connected via the USB ports, but not all of them are connected at the same time. I use Adobe first Elements to edit videos, & if I open an adobe project it is expected that the video files will always be under the same drive letter.

Have you tried to assign drive letters using disk management?
    Mount your drive, then

    Start-> Run-> "diskmgmt.msc".

Find your player in the list, right-click on it and select "change drive letter and paths...". »
