External hard drive no use / formatting / causing a lot of problems on Windows 8

Hello, please someone help me! ??

I just got a new Samsung M3 2 TB external hard drive and I tried running it on my laptop (Windows 8).

I tried to partition it into two parts, but now everything goes terribly wrong.

When I connect it via USB, the computer makes a sound of ping and it seems that 2 drives in my computer. He asks automatically format it... and when I start the formatting process (which takes hours)... in the end it gives me an error report saying "format could not be completed successfully."

Whenever the HARD drive is connected I can not run the disk management tool, because it does not load. I even downloaded the partitioning of the internet tools, but when the HARD drive is connected those just freeze. When the HARD disk is not connected, disk management and all the partitioning tools work correctly.

It's as if the HARD drive takes over from the computer in a way since I can't even make a stop down with it connected. There is no way that I can remove it without risk either. Also sometimes it freezes my computer and the screen is blank. So I have to force my PC off.

It's really driving me crazy. Please can someone advise me on how to solve this problem.

I don't have access to the other PC to see if it works well on them. I really need to get to this sorting.

Hello Dezrtroze,

Thanks for your reply, appreciate the time taken by us keep up to date on the State of the question.

  1. You are able to open the command prompt when the external HARD disk is connected?

Keep the external hard drive connected and put the computer to boot, check if it makes a difference.

Also, check if you are able to open command prompt when the device is connected, if so, to run the check suggested such disk in method 3 above.

On addition to that, you can also run /Scan research on CFS to check any file system corruption and repair it if found any.

The command sfc/scannow (System File Checker) analyses all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions.

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files.

  • After the upgrade to El Capitan I can't write on the external hard drive to NTFS format more

I have an external hard drive formatted in NTFS, I used some Mavericks and could read and write on it without problem, after I installed El Capitan today I can't do more, not this external hard drive is read-only. The problem is that it is full of my data and I can't just format as journaled. What I can do and why it worked fine before?

You need to upgrade or replace the software you used to write on NTFS volumes and should put a copy of your data to a second drive in case one you have fails for any reason unrelated.

  • Using a Mac to partition a USB external hard drive to use to start Windows 7 on a PC

    Hello

My PC hard drive died recently, and I need to reinstall Windows 7. Fortunately, I have a Windows 7 .iso file on my Macbook Pro. I also have an external hard drive USB empty. I try to use the Mac (in particular the disk utility program) partition this hard drive and load the .iso file in it, with the intention to start the system and install Windows 7 on my PC. (NB. I have a new internal hard drive which I intend to install Windows on to, but it's something that I should be able to handle later and should not be relevant at the moment.)

As my DVD player also decided to break (I had not used for a long time), I can't burn the .iso to disk image file and start that way.

So my question is, what is actually in all possible ways to use my WD 500 GB external hard drive to boot Windows 7 from USB? If so, is it possible to configure the hard disk with the .iso image file using a mac? I think I need somehow do "bootable" my hard drive to boot from it, but I don't know how to do this using a mac, so that it will be compatible for Windows startup.

I've had this problem for days now and nothing I try seems to work - I tried what seems like all combinations of formatting, partitioning, extracting, BIOS-set-up-ing and file-system-change I can think of. Any help will be really appreciated. Also, if you need information such as specifications, just let me know and I will try to provide all the details I can.

In addition, I understand that there a lot of messages on the boot from external hard drives, but I looked carefully and found nothing for my situation (more precisely using a mac).

Thanks in advance for help; If all goes well there is something obvious that I'm missing that I can fix it easily.

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

From your problem description, I understand you want to make bootable Windows 7 disk using Mac computer.

About a tool to burn an iso image on Mac, I suggest you contact apple support.

  • USB (external hard drive) device no power down / off when safely removed in Windows 7

Well, I asked this question and no one seems to respond, I also found that many people want to solve this problem so here, it's once again

Whne you have a hard drive that is not a switch on/off button that you who wait when you remove safely from the windows, he stops, so you shouldn't have to disconnect form the usb slot to do.
And it happens in WIndows XP, but it is NOT in Windows 7 (or that I read, in Vista as well).

I want to know, because it bothers me really, what is the solution?

What I want is, after I click on "remove" my external hard drive, that what he would have turned off (standby) as it does in Windows XP!

    Help please.

    Hi gala,.

Thank you for visiting the community Microsoft Windows 7.  The feature remove the device safely does not power supplied to a USB device in Windows. By design, the port to which the device is attached is not interrupted in Windows when the unit is softer.

Please let us know if this helped.

  • Formatting an external hard drive after use on NSLU2

I have a Western Digital 1 TB my book I am recovering for use on another windows system.

When I plug it into a Windows 7 system, it is unable to find the driver HID - but I think this might get fixed by downloading the right driver.  Seems to work without the driver HID anyway, so I continue.

The drive is not visible in Windows Explorer, so I open Manage and go to storage-> disk management.  A window pops up which informed me that "you must initialize a disk before logical disk manager can access it."  I select the disc and use the MBR partition style, and then click OK.  A new pop-up appears with the title "Virtual Disk Manager" and the message 'the system cannot find the file specified.'.

Right, I'll fix that.  Time to get out the heavy artillery.  I run DISKPART, the command line process.  "LIST DISK" shows me what number of disk I need.  'SELECT DISK 1' makes it active.  'CLEAN' it erases.  'CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY' will activate I... Oh. "DiskPart has encountered an error: the system cannot find the file specified. '. Check the log of the events system for more information. ».  Not good.

Any ideas?  The drive was used as backup - disc 2 of a set of two motor external - drive and were reported although the last backup.  I did a lot of research for this and found nothing so far, no idea why the NSLU2 product disk unformattable?

I managed to find a solution to myself.  It was an oversight on my part.

Once I have had reconnected the drive for the system, I started Manage-> Storage-> management of the disks, and then deleted the current partition on the WD My Book.  Then I could add a partition and reformat to NTFS.

  • I need to reformat my external hard drive to use with Bootcamp?

I intend partitioning very little hard drive space because I have 255 Gb solid state. I bought a seagate drive, because for the price, it has the best transfer rate. I intend to help if you are using windows. It would be nice to spend my money on a single external use. The drive must be reformatted for mac. I'm sure that means I can't use it for both, but I hope that I do not understand how boot camp and the work of partitioning. I hope that I can just reformat external use for mac and I can also use it in bootcamp with windows.

If anyone knows how that might unfold, I would be grateful!

    Thank you

    J

The Boot Camp drivers allow Windows to read the disc, but not write installation of MacDrive in Windows will provide write access.

  • Can Toshiba 500 GB external HARD drive - I use for backup?

  • My external hard drive won't format properly

    Hello

Since I installed Capitan I noticed that my HARD drive was doing strange things, maybe he is not related to this and it's just broken. But I decided to format it, because Time Machine doesn't work either then I thought it was the right decision. I think I erased it all Terminal, and now the drive will not be installed.

Now, I really don't know what to do, I post all the photos that I can then perhaps you know what my problem is...

    Thanks in advance.

The drive is faulty, or there is another failure to communicate with him. If the drive has its own power use and verify that it works correctly. Try another USB port and cable. Try a hub powered or bypassing the hub, if applicable. Check that the USB ports and cable (s) are operational. If you have no reason to conclude that a defect, the only remaining possibility is a faulty hard drive.

  • External hard drive for use with FCPX Thunderbolt

I got a new iMac, but the SSD in it's tiny, so I need to invest in an external drive at least some of TB.  Should I go Thunderbolt because I think it's faster?  I'm looking at Fantom and Lacie but I'm not sure what would work best for use with FCPX.

Any tips or suggestions for these two manufacturers?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Well, a disc of Tb2 (which takes care of your iMac) will offer excellent performances. If you need these speeds depends on really how ask your projects are. A USB3 drive will be fast enough for the vast majority of HD projects. Expect to spend more for the readers of Thunderbolt2.

Here is a good article on configuring systems with external drives.

    Good luck.

  • How can I download Adobe Reader on an external hard drive to use on a computer connected to the internet, no

I am trying to download Adobe Reader on my external 1 TB harddrive to use on a desktop that is not connected to the internet for security reasons. How I choose which drive to save the download to?

  • I've just backed up with an external hard drive for the first time, but my profile with my folders for photos, documents, and movies are not there

    Hello

So, I finally got an external hard drive. I formatted for Mac (the device has been verified as being correct), and then he started to do a backup, which stated that a full backup would take 95GB. However, it only supported 19GB.  When I have my 'open' backup drive, I saw that only 'Macintosh HD' received support upward, not my user profile with all my folders containing documents, photos, movies, etc...

I'm quite confused, because I thought that it would save.  I plan on Snow Leopard update to El Capitan, but if something is wrong or I don't like, I'm afraid that I won't be able to restore all my personal files - but only the applications that are on my Macintosh HD.

Should I delete everything in my backup disk and try again?

This is an image of what's inside my external hard drive:

You have not indicated how you have saved, if you've used Time Machine then you do things the hard way and you'll find very difficult TM. Please use the Time Machine interface to locate your saved data. You can benefit from the research on:
