External network drive helps to work with Time Machine

I did research on my brain for the last 2 days on this subject, because I have to remove a ton of material from my laptop before he goes kaput (spoke yesterday on another post)

Here's the plan... I think so:

I want to move photos, films (home movies not DVD) and the iTunes library from my MacBook Pro to an external HD attached to the wifi router, so I don't have to be hard wired to access photos, music, etc., then at home.

I want to continue using Time Machine to back up a) my laptop and b) the files moved to the external hard drive.

This will require a SECOND external drive.

My understanding is that this is possible if the SECOND external drive is connected ONLY to an 802.11ac Apple Airport. No other wifi router will not work.

The airport could be connected by ethernet to an existing Netgear wifi router that Comcast installed in order to manipulation of our home security system.

Is this possible? It is frying my brain.

Or...

I do one) get a time Capsule 2 TB,

(b) plug on the Netgear

(c) to charge all my top media and

(d) connect a 3 TB drive in the time Capsule to back up what is on it and my laptop?

Does it work?

It kills me.

My Seagate 1 TB external hard drive, connected to my Airport Extreme, use the USB port, was completed (it stores up to 3 1 iMac and MBP), so I bought a Western Digital 2 TB hard drive to replace it. I formatted correctly, connected to my MBP, then connected to the Airport Extreme. When I opened the time Machine, it didn't appear. By selecting "Set up the new TimeCapsule" open Airport utility. By clicking on the router button gave me change. By clicking on the "Record" button showed my new hard drive. The "setup" button is grayed out, unless I unchecked and double-checked all of the options. My Mac guy, who never met a problem he couldn't fix it, is puzzled. So I am. It is a Western Digital My Passport Ultra. This external hard drive is not compatible with Time Machine?

What version is your AE? Backup is supported only on the sector of Tower model.

You are self feeding Ultra Passport? It really must be external powered... or plugged into a powered hub.

My passport readers have been consistent in the past... but sometimes strange things... That is, they can change the USB chip without warning, resulting in questions. The USB hub can help.

There is also something... Plug the USB key into one of your computers and start backup TM on this... proceed very long... but we need to start... Cancel backup... and then plug it into AE and see what happens.

  • Network drive cannot be selected in Time Machine, but works in the Finder

    Hello

I have a NetGear wndr4500v2 router in which I now have my 1 TB HD plugged (HFS formatted). I've always used this drive for backups TM via the USB in my MBP, but decided it would be good to have all it wireless. Unfortunately I was not able to select the player in Time Machine.

-I cannot connect / to connect/change player/server and all of its files in the Finder, no problem

-Already played a bit with SMB and AFP sharing settings

-Tried with router via an ethernet cable connection

-NetGear Vaucluse to Time Machine support

    -Of course restarted devices

-I run El Capitan on a 13 "MacBook Pro 2012

All this with no result. I have not yet tried to do the old-fashioned way (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VwHGSHSnDk) as I was hoping for an easy solution and beside that, I'm not sure that this guide still works on OSX 11 all thoughts about it, guys? Let me know!

A device third-party network attached storage (NAS) or a router is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know that's not what you want to hear. I know that the manufacturer declares that the unit will work with Time Machine.

Apple has published a specification for network devices that works with Time Machine. No third party provider, AFAIK, does meet this specification. They all use the application of Netatalk incomplete, obsolete Apple Filing Protocol.

Apple does not endorse any device third-party network for use with Time Machine. See this support article.

Network backup, use as destination an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or a 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only 802.11ac base stations support time Machine, not older model.

Otherwise, use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to save, although none of them are nowhere near as effective or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.

If you are determined to continue to use the device with Time Machine, your only remedy for any resulting problem is the manufacturer (who will blame Apple, neither you nor anyone else but herself.)

I keep the Lightroom Catalog and photos on an external drive and use with Lightroom on a PC. Can I use the same external drive on a Mac with Lightroom system or should I format a new external drive for Mac? If so what is the best way to transfer the data?

External drive has been formatted for PC and Mac I have one that was buying and the other I had to format it for MAC?  If this isn't the case, you must save the files to another device and format or buy a 2nd one.  I bought a 2nd one and now use a back ups.

  • TOSHIBA external hard drive does not work with Mac

Finally, I used my Toshiba external hard drive on my MacBook Pro in December. I want to keep all my photos, and I've always been able to add new photos to it and delete the 'old' out of it. I plugged it today to add more photos, and it is not letting me. I went to the sharing & preferences and he read that when he used to say, read and write. I went to the info, and I noticed, it says that the format is Windows. Why he did change and why can't I use it? Can I fix it? Thanks in advance

Looks like you have formatted the NTFS drive that is read-only for OS X. Copy data to another drive, then partition and format the drive correctly for use on a Mac.

  • WD external HARD drive no longer works with Win7 since the upgrade to Win10

My laptop has Windows 7 installed and my external worked fine. My new laptop had win 8.1 pre-installed so I have connected my drive and worked fine but when I plugged in my Win 7 machine he was working more.

I upgraded my new machine to win 10 to see if that would solve the problem, the drive connected but then I could not remove so I stopped the machine and deleted but I can't always connect to a Win 7 machine.  Everyone knows this?

    Hey there Leeaf72,

I'm sorry to hear about the issue. What is the model and the capacity of the drive? Have you tried the drive on other systems or possibly with other USB cables?
I would check if the drive is recognized in the BIOS, Device Manager or disk management. Here's how for the last two:
    Device Manager: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=cXczh0
    Disk management: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=xFP3QI

I would also see if you have all the latest OS and driver updates. Try to reinstall the USB drivers. You can also try out them completely and let the update tool to install.

If the drive is recognized I download and run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and see if the car passes the quick and extensive tests. Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=a6nz3g

    Post back with some progress,

  • Canvio Plus 2.5 "1 TB external HARD drive does not work with USB 3.0

I've had this drive for about a month.

    I am on Windows 7

I can only operate by connecting to USB 2.0 ports. It is then visible in 'My Computer'.

If I connect to USB 3.0, it turns on the case but does not appear in 'My Computer'.

I tried it on all my USB ports 3.0 - up on one and two in the back of my case.

I checked my BIOS and USB 3.0 is enabled.

I tried to follow the suggestions in the user manual, but the drive does not appear in the management of so connected devices on USB 3.0, but it does when connected in USB 2.0.

    Any ideas?

    Hello

As much as I know the Windows 7 system requires installation of additional USB 3.0 driver.

Many laptops and computers use USB 3.0 driver that was released by Intel... it is because of Intel chipset...

I guess that USB 3.0 is already installed, but probably you need to update the driver at least to the newest version...

  • Help with Time Machine

Although I've owned a mac for years, I started using Time Machine a few months ago only.

For two weeks, I said that my backup disk was full. Today, I got the message that the backup failed and that yesterday was the most recent upward. a double click on the backup disk, I see the records dating back to November. However, when I get Time machine, I can only highlight yesterday.

    So, a few questions.

    1. the November record is really an existing back-up? Why do I see there, but not in Time Machine?

    2. I have several external hard drives that I use for Time Machine and I am interested in finding someone to help me with the best solution to achieve my goal. That is, to remove the 300 GB of photos I have on my internal hard drive to an external hard drive, while still supporting upward from my internal hard drive and a multimedia hard drive for Time Machine.

I hope I can say this is not confusing.

I have an internal 500 GB running 10.11.1 HD because I have pictures of some 300 GB internal hard disk, I only 6.66 GB of available space.

I have 3 external drives available that I can use for the back upward. 1 TB, I got for Christmas and is not used for anything and 2 500 GB HDs... one of them is currently used for Time Machine. The other has a backup is no longer necessary, so I can be erased.

In addition to using Time Machine to back up, I also pay a monthly fee for Crash Plan. Even though this was my home folder files, it does not back up the operating system. I can, however, point it to back up an external hard drive.

Finally, these are my questions. To free up space on my internal hard drive, can I (should) move the photos off my internal HD (I don't use iphoto) and put them on an external HD and then have my internal HD and HD with photos backed up with TM? Would it not be better to transfer my photos on a 500 GB HD and then use the 1 TB (without this partitioning) to back up both the internal and external HDs?

I hope that what I am asking is logical. Thanks to all those who want to take part of my ramblings and give a meaning to me.

    Respectfully,.

    Cayleen

What I do with my Mac sounds a bit like what you ask to do with yours. I have:

-Photos and movies on an external drive (500 GB on a 2 TB disk)

-The rest of my data on the drive internal (approximately 300 GB on a 1 TB drive

-The internal and external are saved on a third drive (3 TB) used for Time Machine.

    Everything works very well.

A lot of users on these forums recommend OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series JEP due to their durability, affordability and quality of construction. I have about 6 of them connected to my iMac and have never had a speaker to fail. When a hard drive fails, substitute is a 5-minute process to re - use the box. To help you get started, you can find the line to: https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB

  • External Combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive does not work with USB 1.1

    Hello world

I have a problem with the PA3352E - 2 CD 2 CD-RW/DVD COMBO USB 2.0. A colleague is owner of this car and use it on a NB DellC610 with Windows XP on it. The problem is that the drive does not work with this type of nb (with a NB from Fujitsu-Siemens newest there no problems); There is always an error message about "surge." I think it has to do with the USB 1.1 because the player seems to be built for USB2.0. Is it possible to use this drive correctly with usb1.1 (ok, the flow is low, but more important is it works in general)? Unfortunately his nb will not work with USB 2.0...

Thank you very much in advance.

    Kind regards

    Hello

AFAIK this external must have a power adapter. You use it too? I'm not 100% sure, but there are difference how much power Gets the USB slot. Toshiba notebooks is around 500 my and some producers another laptops send between 300 and 500 my. The external device requires approximately 700 my.

  • How can I know if an external drive has been used for Time Machine and what computer it came with too?

How can I know if an external drive has been used for Time Machine and what computer it came with too?

I have several laptops and iMacs. I spent the relocation of the year and only used the MacBook Pro.

Now I'm trying to figure out which drive goes with which computer

I connected just a disk seagate 1.5 t and the first thing he did was to ask if I wanted to use it as a Time Machine drive.

    (1) if it is the TM disk accompanying this computer don't would not it have just started upward automatically?

    (2) what happens if I would have said yes?

    (3) I don't even know if it's been activated for TM. Is there a way to tell? It may hold just for iMovie files and other programs associated with a computer from my past.

All readers of backup Time Machine contains a folder named: Backups.backupdb. If you open this folder, you'll find another folder with the name of the computer that has been saved. If several computers have been saved on the same disk, you will have several folders.

I have an IMac with time machine and time capsule. If I buy a large external hard drive can back up all my Lightroom Info but also everything else to go to time machine, & that it saves on hard drive new, after he made a backup to time capsule?  This way, I would have two backups.

    Hi marinersr,

I'm not sure the backup machine capsule/time, but according to me, that it backs up all data on your hard drive.

Yes, you can back up the Lightroom catalog on the hard disk external.

You can set the time of the backup under the catalog settings > backup > he would invite to the backup, when you exit Lightroom > click on select next to the location and specify the location as your new hard drive.

If you want images of both original backup, you can configure to create a second copy of the images on your external drive during import.

    Kind regards
