• Failed to install the update to Windows 7.

  Windows 7 Pro, home & student Office, Outlook 2010 installed.  Updates are downloaded outmaticaly.  During the power on the system hangs for at least 10 minutes with a message is displayed:
  Updates configuration Windows, 0% complete, do not turn off the computer.
  After about 10 minutes, the message goes to the "restoration of the changes' and the system works normally.
  The material is a laptop of Lenovo T61.
  What gives?  What can I do to fix this?

  Your answer was very helpful.  After that three failures l updates finally worked without my intervention.  Updates are KB21585 and KB979538.

  I think Microsoft may have made a few changes to the installation process and it worked finally.  I learned something about the updates and how to check what my system installed that I didn't know before.

  Here's what I recommend you do:

  1 disable UAC. Down comes the restrictions - turn it off completely.
  2 restart your computer for the change to take effect.
  3 re - download the update of security for Microsoft Office System 2007 (KB982331) from the link below:

  4. install. It should work fine.

  If you go to programs and features, and then on the left side you should see a link for "Daily display installed."  Which would then show the list of updates with the State which will show you if it failed or not.

  You might be able to do something with SFC/scannow , or be Windows XP, possibly a repair install might fix things (if you have a Windows XP with the Service Pack 3 installation CD or can integrate a new installation CD for Windows XP SP3).

  I understand the fact that you still recommend a format/install. Not having done it would be prudent to see how the operating system is running and if I have any further questions or you feel it is too risky on a computer used to pay bills and perform other necessary transactions.   We're running out of WinXP SP3.  Apparently, we are unable to install/uninstall anything correctly.  I think it may have something to do with "a basic installation damaged."  I got this error when trying to manually install KB972581 (a security update for 2007 Microsoft Office System).  This could have been caused by running the Windows Installer cleanup utility, I didn't have problems with Office 2007.  We were informed at all by continuing to upgrade with another program issues.

  We daily use Outlook 2007.  Multiple users, so we can't delete it.

  Same thing with KB970895 (update of security for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2) - another failure with the description of the error "Unable to install Windows Installer MSP file".

  Basically, the automatic updates of Windows always fail.  Comprehensive research of these forums, I found and ran the Microsoft FixIt! # 50202, without result.

  I had a similar problem - resolved two things actually. First make sure yu have the latest windows installer engine. Then download the package fails and run interactive mode. This will give you the 'real' error which causes the failure so that you can correct it.

  In my case it was a dependency on another file system that was resolved by running sfc/scannow - it's maybe not the question you... once again, run the full installation package and also to enablehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/223300 logging to track down issues...
