failure of computer on windows 7 64bt update

my computer crashed when I tried to download the latest updates for windows 7 64bt was scheduled to return to the computer store, not impressed, that they disabled windows updates, now I fear download updates in case it crashes again, someone else has this problem?

Solution is to buy an external USB hard disk and create a "save image" of Windows 7 before you download and install updates.

You change how Windows 7 installs updates: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-how-Windows-installs-or-notifies-you-about-updates

Use of the "look but let me pick" option.

Should any cause of an update a problem you restore your PC back to how it was before you install any update. The cost of the USB key and the Image backup software will pay for itself, because I am sure that the shop charged $$ for what they were doing.

Yes, there is Windows 7's built in backup and restore the "System Image" function and it works, BUT at least you bought a very large capacity/key USB Backup and Restore will not hold a very many backups.
