Failure of Outlook Express to download and email: error code0x800CCCOF

Here is the error message displayed when I try to use Outlook Express:

(I can, perversely, send messages in the normal way, but it won't download the multiplication of incoming messages).

"Your server has terminated suddenly the connection. The possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. "Account: 'mail.btinternet.com', server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, secure (SSL): no, error number: 0x800CCC0F.

I checked all the settings and they seem to be set correctly, as suggested by my ISP. I also increased the length of the "Time out" maximum available, as suggested in a Microsoft article, nothing helps.

Can anyone suggest how to deal with this problem?

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. The way most effective to do this is to completely remove the program anti-virus and then perform a custom installation. When the possibility of withdrawing the e-mail analysis arises, remove.

    You did not indicate EO to leave a copy of messages on the server, so when he downloaded from the server, they have been removed from it.  Go to tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced and check the box leave a copy on the server for the future.

    Outlook is an Office program. Outlook Express is an email client that has been built into XP and previous versions. If you click on "help |" On... "in Outlook, it will tell you the version.

    Ok thank you. I received three messages from you, two of the demon and the other Hotmail.

    Hotmail has helpfully includes the originating IP address, so I was able to check further. There is no WHOIS data for it (a bad sign to start), but it is not in the CBL. Read this page to see why it is listed and take the appropriate action. Once you are convinced that your computer - and another using the same network - are clean, you can use the link at the bottom of the CBL page to remove from the list the IP address.

    I still don't know where FCMA comes into it, and diagnostic tests in the NDR is incorrect. It is not the content of the message that is at fault, but I suspect that the block list.

    You can set default email under Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties.  OE will then use it by default, but if the e-mail was sent to a different e-mail address, when you reply, OE will use this e-mail address and not the default value in the response.  If you cannot set the e-mail by default, or if OE doesn't know it, then you can go to file | Identities and install a new identity and add your mail accounts to ensure that identity and that should solve the problem.

    Visit the website of your email provider and see if they have instructions to set up an account in Outlook Express.  They provide you with the appropriate settings.   Nobody here knows them, because they are specific to the e-mail provider.  So check with your provider of messaging on the correct settings to use for OE.

    Move any message you want to save to a local folder that you create. Then, remove the problem of Inbox as follows.
     
    Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.
     
    In Windows XP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.
     
    With OE closed, find the box of Inbox.dbx and delete it. Another will be created automatically when you open OE.
