Fainted because of color cartridge

I have a HP Deskjet 4260. Yesterday, my son bought new color and black ink cartridges. Since it replaced the cartridges, the color cartridge has not been working properly. The printing color is VERY faded. The black seems to work fine. I have reviewed the troubleshooting online and spent several hours trying to correct the problem, and nothing helps. I tried the function clean auto and manually cleaned the cartridge. I ran all self tests and have not found a solution. Another strange thing, when I try to check for both cartridges ink levels, it shows the two as being completely empty. I have always used the HP74 and HP75 cartridge and my son bought the HP74XL and the HP75XL, but everything I read online says that these cartridges are compatible with the 4260. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to correct the problem. I know just enough about these dangerous things. Thank you.

Looks like you have cartridges refurb/handed to nine.  These will not display the correct ink levels.  Also, the quality is very variable but is generally poor, see here for a study.

To troubleshoot poor color see page here.  A real HP (regular or XL size) cartrdige would probably solve your problem.

  • printer will work if the color cartridges are ink

I have an Officejet 4620. My computer says all the ink cartridges are out of ink. I can always print in black. Hello @Connsu,

Welcome to the Forums of HP Support!

I would like to help you today with your color cartridge application today. Because your printer uses four cartridges: HP 564 black, HP 564 Cyan, Magenta 564 HP and HP 564 yellow, if one or all of these color cartridges are exhausted replace them to continue using the printer. Your HP Officejets ink system is designed to print when have all ink cartridges. A little ink in each cartridge is used for maintenance and maintenance tasks completed by your printer to keep the print head system in your printer in good working order.

The print head is the part that the cartridges will fit. It controls the "reading" of the cartridges and put the ink on the page. If the printhead is not able to perform regular maintenance, due to depleted cartridges, there is a chance that the mechanism of the print head gets dirty. If the printhead is damaged in any way a whole unit replacement may be necessary. For more information about using ink please click here.

In the future, if you mainly print in black from the computer, you can set your printer driver to use black ink only. Normally when you print from your computer files will be sent to your printer as "images". If your printer "thinks" it prints an image file that ink color will be used to enrich the black ink. If you don't want that to happen, you can enable grayscale printing option.

    • How to set grayscale in Windows:
    1. Click on the Start menu
    2. Click on devices and printers
    3. Right click on your printer and select Printing Options
    4. Click on features or Advanced
    5. Select the Grayscale dropdown and replace Black Ink only
    6. Click apply and OK

If you ever want to print in color that you just open the document to print, click Properties in the print dialog box and change black ink only on OFF. This setting only will change to print one job and will return to black ink only for future jobs.

    5. In the color menu, select Grayscale or black & white

  • printer is not showing is not newly installed; color cartridges It prints well but not scan or copy

I installed new color cartridges, but they do not appear as such in the display panel printer, which continue to save empty color cartridges.

The printer test page was perfect.  However, the printer is neither scanner nor fax, nor can I access the installation options.

Sorry you have a problem with scanning and copying after putting the new cartridge in the printer.

What kind of printer you have?

You can try to perform a hard reset on the printer. Unplug the power cord at the back of the printer. Leave for 30 seconds and plug it back.

You can also clean the print head because it can read the contacts on the new cartridge wrong.

  • can you use a deskjet 970cse in black only mode when the color cartridge dries up

can you use a deskjet 970cse in black only mode when the color cartridge dries up? Thank you, Jerry

banhien information is very accurate. I would just add a bit of it. Because this printer uses a tricolor cartridge and a black, it should be one of the printers that will print with just the black cartridge installed. It is called print in backup mode. I should happen automatically when you remove the color cartridge and try printing. A message will arrive on the printer or the computer and ask you if you want to print in backup mode. Say yes, and it should let you print. Hope that helps.

  • How can I get my printer to use just the color cartridge for the black & white you are exhausted?

Whenever my on my dell printer black ink cartridge runs out, I'm generally left with a color cartridge, which is a total waste of money, because they are purchased together in a common case; is it possible that I can tell my printer to switch to the color cartridge and use that one until 'she' runs?

I did a search for authentic cartridges, not refurbished which are cheaper, but not as reliable and these are just a few options, I found. Check the cartridge number I've seen series 2 and no 5. But whatever it is, they are there.

    Hi @katvit74,

While I don't have any specific purchasing advice @katvit74, I can offer a few troubleshooting tips to see whether your printer is at the end of his life.

You're not the first to express frustration at having to have impoverished the cartridges replaced to continue printing. Personally, I suggest to use grayscale options, when printing so that the colored inks not so quickly adjust upward. Frankly, after reading your post again, I feel that you don't have want to solve your Photosmart Premium.

I value your time and do not want you to feel like I don't have. That being said, we will encircle your initial request. Maybe you would rather a system printer for 2 ink that the cartridge supports single mode, or maybe a Laserjet that prints black only. The printer you choose should be based on your needs. According to me, the best way I can help is to offer you the tool product Advisor.

Tool advice product is designed to target the product most suitable for your particular needs. Please answer all questions to give us the most complete picture of your needs - more information you provide, the more efficiently, we can recommend.

I am wanting to print Grayscale / black only, still does not allow me to print because I have empty color cartridges.

How can I get around this?

    I tried changing the settings

    Thank you very much

While printing in black is only an option when the color is low, it is blocked once a cartridge is exhausted.  You will need to replace the depleted cartridge. Page 94 of the said the manual here:

Printing in black ink or color only

For regular use, this product does not print using only the black ink cartridge when the color cartridges are out of ink. However, your printer is designed to allow you to print as long as possible when your cartridges are starting to run out of ink.

When there is enough ink in the print head, printer will offer you the use of black ink only when one or more cartridges color is out of ink and color ink usage only when the black cartridge is out of ink.

    • The amount that you can print using the black or color ink is only limited, so the available spare ink cartridges when printing in black ink or color only.

    • When it is no longer sufficient ink printing, you will get a message from one or more cartridges are exhausted, and you need to replace the depleted cartridges before you resume printing.

HP and other printer manufacturers have technology another printer for different needs.  For ink jet printers:

    • Some have integrated into the ink cartridges print heads.  These printers can print generally with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black cartridges (but not both) removed. The 8040 a Officejet is an example.
    • Other printers have separate replaceable printheads and inks.  An example would be the printer Officejet Pro 8600.  In these printers print head can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors off.  Some of these printers allow printing with a color, the other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or several colours, the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send to the printer for the service.
    • Other printers have permanent print heads.  To run only those without little ink in all colours would risk causing damage to the print head because of clogs, air ingested in the printhead or grilled printhead resistances of shooting. The Officejet 6700 is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed print heads that could require the service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.

The document described here how the ink is used.  The document is written for inkjet printers HP the same principles apply to printers inkjet from other manufacturers.

If you do ever print color laser printer would probably be a better choice.  If you occasionally print color but especially black a HPI printer as those in the first category above can be a good choice.

  • Photosmart 5510 requires the color cartridge to print in black

I have an Imac running MAC OS X 10.7.5 and a HP Photosmart 5510.

I can't select a black and white printing other than "regular, fast rough, black and white paper.

QUESTION: Why are there no "plain paper, best option, black and white"? Or should I ask, where is the ordinary paper, the best black and whitee option?

Surely each printer must be able to print the last option.

To satisfy my need for a good level of black and white print that I have to use the color cartridges - it is expensive.

I would be grateful for any help.

    Thank you.

To print graphics or the text of quality 'Best' the printer uses color ink.  In the case of text, the color ink is printed black to improve the darkness and roughness of the edge.  (Color ink makes printing 'together' more quickly, reducing the purge on the edges).

For graphics, the printer uses drops color printing black or gray printing mode best because it gives much better graphics.  The color ink droplets are much smaller than the black.  When the color ink is used for printing in grayscale or B & W graphics, the results are much thinner that the result would be in black ink only.

If the quality does not matter (much) draft mode provides the best economy, but for a better print quality, color ink is necessary.

  • HP PSC 1317 AIO - you need a color cartridge to print in black only?

    Hello

Just a quick question to run me to the store twice save.

A totally black HP 56 + HP 57, a color with a little ink left would be enough for printing in bulk in black only? I'm not sure how this works because I was told that some printers draw on the color cartridge to compensate for the dark ?

    Thank you!

    Hello

Almost all printers draw color inks to print in black, it is the rule of normal color mixing. We can stop this using 'grey levels' option on the printer or applications (for example, Word...). BUT the printers need color inks to protect the print head (please don't ask me why) that is why they will stop when no good no color ink cartridges installed.

    Kind regards.
