Faulty display on Portege 2010

I have a 3 years Portege 2010. When I use it today the display started to go white, up and down, and then went black. When I restart it I get the Toshiba logo and the first two screens to boot Windows, but then the screen goes black. Sometimes I get more than others before the screen goes black - for example sometimes, I get as far as connecting Windows then it (i.e. Windows) freezes. Sometimes it crashes on the first screen of "Toshiba", before it crashes. Sometimes it gets past the boot selection menu and then I get a BSOD (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL).

I also noticed that if I press the two ends of the (extended) battery the display begins to break up.

This sounds like a faulty screen or a faulty connection? If the latter is this something I could try to fix me? If not, what is the approximate cost of the setting of this kind of thing?

TIA
Ian

Hello

There are a lot of different issues with the display relly. Really, I n know where to start with comments. ;)

I presume that you can install the recovery image to get rid of BSODS and check how it works with the external monitor. I guess that on an external display it won't you have problems with the black and white display.

As you know on this path, it is not easy to give any kind of diagnosis. If everything works well with external display problem is LCD. If the external monitor, you will notice some strange behavior, it may result from the graphics chip on the motherboard. The test please a bit more intensively.

  • Portege 2010 - bad BIOS (block3)

    I have a portege 2010 with a bad bios
on normal startup, it goes to screen
BIOS (Block3) is damaged! (Call the repairman).

so I tried to reflash the bios in the usual way.
    do a disk with
    -----
    biosfile biofca6t.com
    chgbiosa.exe
    -----
and start either with the flashing the BIOS button (just to the left of the space bar)
or by pressing any key on-screen "block3.

It does not load the program chgbiosa.exe. who reads the bios file
    Hot flashes and it recharges
    -----
    Reading BIOS file...
Data erasure and writing the BIOS...

    ROM write successful!
    Utility finished
    -----
    Then it restarts

but unfortunately. nothing changes. He still goes to the display of block 3

so I think I can have damaged the chip of the bios on my hands.
Since the successful re-flash does nothing...

    -----------------
    NOT RECOMMENDED
So I decided to check if the chgbiosa actually do anything.
so, during the writing process, I unplugged the power.
(incomplete writing process) and I'm done with a (block 1)
damaged. An another bios update later.
and we are back to (Block3)
so it does not write in the bios
DO NOT TRY THIS: can erase the part "failsafe" of the bios
    ---------------------
so the question is. Where should I go from here.

I'm willing and able to unsolder the chip and flash also
but I don't have a bios not 'complete' user flashable part only of it since the official updates of the file...

can I order a new chip preflashed somewhere?

can I somehow totally clear the bios user box then it reflashing?

can - I somehow replace the bios (more than the standard chgbiosa way?)

can I transplanted the and of a motherboard Portege 2000
(the failsafe will start so I can flash with a bios P2010?)

I can start another tool, describing it as "chgbiosa.exe" on the floppy drive, which can be useful

can I do the smaller biosfile, so it won't need block3 (remove the logo toshiba etc.)
    from the rom file?

    Any suggestions are appreciated

This notebook is a project of the company. I am prepared to do anything...

    Hello

So many questions, and most of them must be answered by technicians. I really think you need professional help. I recommend you to call the nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.
To be honest, I don't think that you will be able to order this chip anywhere. Speak with the service.

By the way: mainboard renovated for Portege 2000/2010 with work well chip BIOS, I found on eBay for 39 euros, so if you can not do anything and BIOS repair buy new motherboard, Exchange and be happy.

Furthermore, I Portege 2000 and it's really nice laptop.

    Hello

Unfortunately, there is nothing to see. The recovery image is created for each laptop model and may not be used for the different laptop models. Can you imagine the situation you can use each medium recovery on each laptop model?

Each cell phone has hardware specific, and because of this, the recovery media are specific for particular laptop model.

By the way: which CD-Rom device that you use?

  • Update CPU is possible on Portege 2010

Hi, I wonder if it is possible to upgrade the processor on my Portege 2010, I work as a pc technician so I have no problem to do the job.
If so can what models I use?

    Thank you

Upgrade CPU on the laptop is really not simple and delicate. I think you know this because you're a pc technician.
The Portege 2010 seems to be an old I didn t find many details on this device, but I found out that this laptop was equipped the PIII-M (Mobile) 866 MHz 133 MHz FSB processor.

What you could do is install and hardware diagnostic tool to find out which chipset is supported. Then check the details of this chipset (maybe on Intel page) and which could be supported by the CPU.

However, I'm really skeptical that the laptop will be stable after the upgrade of Mr. overheating could be a big trouble!

  • Portege 2010 - clicks of death? -Perhaps the HARD drive is dead

    Hello

A few minutes ago, I tried to start my portege 2010, who worked a few hours ago. Now, I do not even past the BIOS screen because the disc is of strange noises, as leaders try to enter the post, but fail. I have to admit that yesterday the system froze for no obvious reason but I didn't know that this was due to a failure to come, I just rebooted the machine and it behaved like any other day. So I'm rather perplexed, how the disaster could hit so suddenly. The portege is out of the warranty period, so I guess there is no way get around to buy a new drive. I wonder if this problem is a common problem among the Portégé series, I think I remember an article published online by indicating this.

    Hello Steffen

If Toshiba STAS 10 000 or more laptop computers Portege 2010 and you find one or 10 other users with the same symptoms of HARD drive, it cannot be any kind of common problem. Common problem is something else.

According to your description, is it really possible the HARD drive shows signs of dysfunction. All you can do is to watch carefully what happens in the next few days and if the HDD feature fails, you must buy a new HARD drive. All that s!

If you will be able to start it in some way I recommend you back up all your data (e.g. on USB key) before the HARD disk fails completely.

  • Display Driver Portege R100

  • Re: No display on Portege M700

    Hello

My son put his computer bag stuffed with his laptop Toshiba Portege M700 inside his office (just out of warranty).

The laptop shows no sign of injury, but on turn it only "all the right noises", but there is no display on the screen. If the laptop is turned on with the charger connected and then some colored vertical bars appear, and then they fill with white, but nothing else.

We tried to connect an external monitor and pressing Fn + F5 and the vertical bars disappear from the internal screen and it goes totally black, but nothing appears on the external monitor. Pressing Fn + F5 new returns the vertical lines at random on the internal display.

We have also tried to start the laptop in the Mode menu without failure by pressing F8 during the initialization of the laptop, with or without an external monitor, with or without the Fn + F5, but you cannot get any video on the monitor either internal or external.

Fact it seems that maybe a connector was dislodged by the shock of the fall, that you think that the laptop is now pushing up daisies?

    Any notice received with gratitude.

    WIBs

To be honest I n don't know which connector you want to say but there is no pic on external displays to be a serious problem.
It seems impossible to send the video signal via the video out port.

It is not easy to offer an accurate diagnosis on this virtual path.
What do you do now? Try to repair it or what?

Maybe you should contact Toshiba service and ask for verification. They can run diagnostic tools and tell you what is defective, what needs to be replaced and how much it will be cool. Then you can do what to make the decision.

  • Portege 2010 :-CD of recovery does not

I am recovering a 2010 Portege with the recovery CD. But it tells me to insert the CD n ° 1 recovery.
I use the CD-RW/DVD Toshiba USB drive. The computer boots fine on the CD, but it seems as if the CD drivers are not installed properly, perhaps because it is a USB - stick.
I tried to create a floppy boot, but with the same problem. The CD is not installed.

How can I make it work?

    Hello

As far as I know that a Toshiba 16-bit CD player would work because the other drives are not detected by the BIOS as a boot device.

  • Graphic display of Portege R700 objects

Display graphic artifacts R700-182, Windows 7 Pro 32 bit, bought Nov 2010 (so under warranty).

Once the computer has been used for an hour, the product suddenly the laptop screen display artifacts. Usually, these are manifest as one or several repetitions horizontal to the top of the screen but may include other artifacts such as reverse color blocks. Artifacts appear and change the keyboard or the mouse, click on actions, but will never disappear: the screen becomes unusable in this State. The display will return to normal if the 3D vertical sync to the Intel graphics adapter setting is changed, but the artifacts come back almost immediately. Rebooting the computer returns the display to the normal state, but an hour later they reappear. Seems to be the time rather than heat related.

Display objects appear only in certain applications. Word 2003, Excel 2003, Powerpoint 2003 are still affected. Outlook 2003, Internet Explorer is not. No artifacts with movies. I might post some example screenshots (if I knew how).

The problem was found in all States of connection (wireless power, LAN), except when connected to the local LAN and power via a port replicator (Toshiba), but in this case, tests don't have not been extended. No external monitor is used. Display drivers have been updated with no change in display objects. Software AV is up to date, working properly and reported no problems. Any ideas what it is- or is it a case of warranty return?

In my opinion you should not waste your time with some tests or something else. Laptop is not so old and should work perfectly.
Contact the nearest Toshiba service provider in your country and ask for help.
They can test your laptop with diagnostic tools and help you if there is a serious hardware problem.

Do you know how to find the right address or phone number?

  • What external case for HARD drive do I need for my Portege 2010

I have a corrupted windows XP, but fear using the repair option due to the large number of photos of my children who have yet to be backed up or displayed in a photo etc store.

I found that you can buy a hard drive enclosure that can then be used via the USB port to download these important files before any repair option. I bought a standard encolsure 2.5 "from Maplin but the connection is a woman on both ends (enclosure and hard drive) and a few shorter pins on the drive of Toshiba wants the encolsure.
How I progress - my wife won't let me live if I can't get these photos off the coast and professional background should not be necessary.

Win ME was never an operating system on this model. Try driver Win98 or Win2000. You may have to "force" the driver in the system.
