I have a 3200 HP with XP Home Edition. Windows starts only in Mode safe when I download Service Pack 3. Is there a way to fix this without doing a complete restore of the system.  I've been running without SP3 because I knew of this issue. Recently, it has been downloaded and now Windows does not start successfully.  Only in Safe Mode.   When I discovered this problem, I was able to fix it, but can't remember if it was fixed without doing a complete restore of the system and starting over.

If the HP recovery process does not work, it seems to be a hardware problem.

And now that you mention have a blue screen.

If it was a software problem, the process of HP recovery to reinstall the operating system should fix (take it back in new condition).

And this new condition would exclude any incorrect hardware drivers may have installed the original problem.

After the updates of this week, the system will not load anything.

    Hi Juliet,

Thanks for asking the question in the Microsoft Community forum.

From your description, I understand that after Windows Update, you can not load Windows.

To better understand the question, please answer the following questions:

    1. What is the version of the Windows operating system that is installed on your computer?

    Reference: http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/help/which-version-of-the-windows-operating-system-am-i-running

    2. what happens when you try to load the system? You receive an error message?

    3. what application or anti-virus security suite is installed on your computer?

    4. you remember after installation of update, you are facing this problem?

Remove any external device connected to the computer without keyboard and mouse and then perform the methods.

If you are using Windows 7 and Windows Vista, follow the mentioned methods:

    Method 1:

Question remains always use same method 2.

    Method 2:

Try to perform the Startup Repair and check.

hard drive detected problem iminent failure press F1 key to continue... After pressing F1 computer won't start in safe mode

so I check apparently I solve the problem. I run a system check and all is fine... I reboot my computer and I get: problem hard drive detected iminent failure press F1 to continue... boots up in safe mode only... the changes ive made did nothing because when the computer reboots, it starts again in SafeMode only. but with the networking and database drivers and the DCs as startup options. nothing seems to stick to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

  • Blue screen. Windows does not start. Even on Safe Mode!

When I turned on my laptop the windows logo and everything is in place. But then comes the black screen and ask the options to start windows normally, start in safe mode, ect. I chose to start normally, then a blue screen appears which says that the computer has shut down to prevent damage. He said that I had to disable all anitivirus and other things that I don't have to read. I tried every other selection as start in safe mode, start in safe mode with command prompt, in the other options, I get the same blue screen. I really need to get this problem fixed. I have no CD of installition XP, I have no CD of restoration, I have nothing to work with, so I just need to know a way around it.

There is no magical way around that without any installation disc. Most laptops come with a picture of factory restore on a special partition on the hard drive. The factory restore process is normally called by pressing a key of function (such as F11) to start the computer. There will be a message as to what function key press the screen when you start your computer. You can also consult the manual of your computer or the computer mftr.'s site, or contact technical support to learn how to restore your computer if you plant from each computer mftr. He does it differently - sometimes even between models.

These machines also generally have a utility to create physical recovery disks in case the hard drive needs to be replaced or the factory restore image is somewhat damaged. If you have not created the recovery image recovery physical and damaged disks, contact technical support of computer mftr. to order a set of recovery disks. It is normally very expensive, around $20-25.

Before you try to restore the computer, you must determine if the material is good. You can test yourself:

    http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot

A good troubleshooting step is to start with a Linux Live CD. I like Knoppix, but there are others. This has two advantages: 1) if the system works, you can back up all the data that missed your last backup; and (2) with the machine running Linux allows to determine whether the problems are caused by software or hardware. If the machine is unbearably slow and/or Linux cannot run correctly, you know that the hardware is at fault. If the machine behaves perfectly under Linux, you know that the software (Windows) is at fault.

If the equipment is faulty, if you replace it or not depends of which component is bad and the age of the machine.

If the material is good (maybe Windows has been severely infected with a virus/malware and that's why he no longer starts for example), then perform a restore if you plant using any method has been provided by the computer laptop mftr.

If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad).

  • Cannot defragment the hard drive AND cannot start the computer in safe mode

I have been unable to defragment my hard drive because it tells me that chkdsk /f planned.  I tried manually works in command mode nothing works.  I was advised to try to start up in safe mode, but when I do that all I get is a screen of command lines, and my computer freezes there.  What I'm doing wrong and what I can do differently?

If you try to defragment a volume and see a message like this:

Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (c :))
    Please run Chkdsk /f.

This means that the volume (disk) that you want to defragment was marked 'dirty' XP.

The question was preceded by a loss of power, aborted reboot or abnormal termination?  (this includes the plug pulling, buttons power, remove the battery, etc.)

The afflicted system has a working CD/DVD (internal or external) drive?

You have a genuine XP installation CD bootable, which is the same Service as your installed Service Pack (this is not the same as any recovery CD provided with your system)?

You can check the status of your bit of impurity from a command prompt window.

To do this, click Start, run and enter in the box:

    cmd

Click OK to open a command prompt window.

For example, to query the bit of impurity on drive C, type:

    fsutil dirty query C:

    The sample output:
    Volume c is dirty
    Volume C: is dirty

Is the volume of your sale or it is not dirty?

The only way to disable the on a volume's dirty bit is to run chkdsk with error correction.

You can click on start, run and enter in the box:

    Chkdsk /r

Click OK and answer Yes to schedule the chkdsk next time XP restarts, restart your system and keep your fingers crossed that the chkdsk /r clears the dirty bit (you may need to run once or twice).

If who disobeys, then you will need to start in the XP Recovery Console and run the chkdsk /r from there.

  • XP labors heavily and Will does not start (sometimes even in safe mode.) "And if it starts in the DM, it will freeze when I try to enter to change anything).

I have a XP computer. During use, the power supply cord unplugged and computer is dead. When I tried to restart it, it will go to the blue screen with an error, go to the screen that asks if I want to start in safe mode. It does not start in normal mode, but it does get my wallpaper and stay there. Sometimes Windows XP screen and stay there. It really starts to make a lot of noise when one of these things happens. Don't know what to do. I have a XP OS disk Dell provided with the computer. Any ideas?

Repair the Windows XP installation - you should have all your files intact.

A repair install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used to the repair facility. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will have to be reapplied.
