File to HTML Help (.chm) display on a share network in Win7

In Windows XP, the following article explains how to change the registry to work around the security constraint that prevents the display of the content of the HTML (.chm) help files hosted on a shared directory on the network.  http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/896358

I need to find similar workaround for Windows 7. I looked in the registry on my Win7 machine and found a similar course, but none of the values given in the above KB are in Win7 - everything seems to be under the 2.0 node.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\2.0

Currently, when I try to open a .chm on the network, the file opens, the component table of contents is displayed, but it is said in the content pane: Navigation to the webpage was canceled I have not found all signals in Win7 forum about it. Any ideas?
Thank you.

    What program do you use?

  • Create CDs for the HTML Help file

    Two Questions:

Can someone tell me which files/folders, I need to distribute my my HTML Help .chm file? When I create my CD, I burn only the .chm file and it does not work.

Should I make a CD or should I Zip files first. or does make a difference?

    Thank you.

    KT

    Hi kt

The attached code must be copied and pasted into an instance of Notepad. After this, change your. CHM file name and save the file autorun.inf. So make sure you include the file autorun.inf on the CD.

Note: Make sure that your. CHM file name is only 8 characters. For example, do not use my CHM. Wonderful CHM. Use instead something like WondrCHM.CHM. (More long filenames often prevent the autorun works correctly)

I hope that helps a little... Rick

  • Search in HTML Help does not work with the help of Web to CHM converter script

    Hello

    My problem is simple:

In fact, we use a simple HTML help with a chm file.

The WebHelp offers more possibilities and the new script in RobotHelp 10 prupose for generate a WebHelp in a chm file, so perfect!

But when I use the Web Help for CHM converter script, I generate a good chm file, I open it and do a search. The page on that research are based, but when I want to open one, I always have a message "this program cannot display this webpage".

For more information, the search function works well when I do a simple HTML.

Thank you in advance for your reply,

    François

    Hello

How this may or may not work may depend on where the CHM is when you open it. It is on your C drive? If this isn't the case, it must be.

In addition, if you copied it, it is possible you have to right click and choose "Unlock" in the property sheet.

  • Impossible to compile CHM - Message says to close all the Windows HTML help

TCS 1.3 running with the latest patches.

Single source project - out using HTML (.chm).

When I try to compile, I get the following message is displayed:

"Cannot create compiled file. It can be opened in another window. Please close all Windows HTML Help and try again. »

I don't have any HTML Help windows open. Closing of HR and restart do not solve the problem. I have to shut down the computer, which is a serious concern, before I can compile again. I do not work in a network directory, which may be the cause, but I would like to know if there is a process that I can kill for Windows Task Manager that would allow me to compile without having to restart my computer. I don't see any process that identifies itself as something that I can kill for this problem.

    Anyone?

    Hello

This message normally you launched the. CHM file you are trying to create. The first step in the process is to destroy the existing. CHM in preparation for the construction of a new. Just as you must destroy a House on a lot where you want to create a new.

If your. CHM is on a network drive, another user may be subject to open. (yet another good reason to work locally)

If your. CHM is on your local drive, RoboHelp believes that you have opened. If you press Alt + Tab, you see a blue arrow pointing upwards. Which indicates the CHM file running.

  • Image, Open/Close for "TOC book properties" (to CHM HTML Help)

    Hi all

    (1) where is the control to set the image of the book (e.g. book purple, yellow folder) for all books. I did this once before have forgotten since.

The parameter - ' TOC book properties > advanced > Image'-does it for all the selected book.

    (2) is there a way that I can put to a Book TOC node to make it Open by default (showing its sub-nodes/books) on the execution of the CHM HTML Help?

    TIA

    -avi

You can manage this by using a bunch of custom icon. File no tricks end of Rick Stone shows you how. For your second question, I believe that the only way to achieve this would be to have the default topic of the CHM file inside the book to open. You may also be able to achieve it by some form of Javascript that I can't help you with that. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone else will report it.

  • RoboDemo (Captivate) file links do not work in HTML help

I have about 20 Flash animations (a .swf and a single .html file) that I created using Captivate (formerly "RoboDemo"). They are stored in a subfolder named 'Demos' under the application folder where my compiled help file is stored. Each film is referenced in a with a statement like the following help topic:

    {The EWL RoboEx32.dll, WinHelp2000, HREF is "demos\dc_gaprop.htm" ALTERNATE = "Self_Running_Demo_Links"}

When I compile for WinHelp 4, Flash movies work perfectly when I opened the topics that refer to them as above. When I compile for HTML Help, however, nothing happens when I open the topics that reference them. All subjects in plain text and links to web pages seem to work in the HTML Help version. I am running help on my local disk. I have a Windows XP computer. I use RoboHelp 5.0 (a little outdated, I know, could this be the cause?)

    Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the reply, Rick. It turns out that my problem was that the Flash files are in the wrong place when I compiled the .chm file. If I put them in the folder indicated by themes in my support system (a "Démos" subfolder), and then the Flash movies get compiled in the .chm file and everything is fine. Their location is not serious when I compile for WinHelp 4 because they do not need to be compiled in.

  • executable and help .chm file

I am using a .chm help file to provide context-sensitive help for some VI and control in my application running. I put the path of the .chm file in the path of the help of dialog of the VI documentation and of certain typedefs of control as well as the tag help. Everything works correctly when you run in Labview but when I create an executable file and run it, I get inconsistent results. Some controls to access the help file (question mark in the context help window is blue) while others do not (question mark is grayed out).

How is access to a .chm help file is incompatible in the executable it all works perfectly in operation?

My help .chm file is loaded in my project. I'm using Labview 2011 64 bits.

I rebuilt the application LabVIEW 2013 and did some tests to see if I can recreate the problem.  I can't.  I see the problem only in the executable file that you sent me.  When you build an executable file, however, and want to deploy to the target, you will want to use paths stripped in context help.  The method that I used to do this is as follows:

To create a static reference of VI and use a relative path to set the path to each control.  When I use this method and then include the help files in my executable, I can change the path to the file for the Type Defs programmatically.  This seems to be a better way of defining the type defs, so that the path will be relative whenever respective executable file and its data directory are located.

  • HTML Help Home button - how to change the content

I use Robohelp 11 and we post our content as microsoft HTML help.  I wonder how to change the content of the button the top of the page next to the front buttons and back at home.  Since it's HTML Help I can't use a skin to change the buttons, but I need to change what is displayed when you click the home button.  I can't find how to change when the button links to.  I just want to link to our home page.

    Thank you!

    Matthew

    Hello

On luck outside, that you are not really wanting to address the 'skin in a CHM' quite yet, try this.

First, note the path and the name of the file that you want to appear when the user clicks on the Home link.

Open the pod of setting up a project. (View > pods > project configuration)

Expand Windows, and then double-click the CHM window. (If you do not see a CHM window, you will need to create a)

In the Properties window, click the Advanced Properties button.

And from the Advanced Properties dialog box, you type (Yes, you heard that right, TYPE) the path and the name of the file you want. (Remember this first step?) Note that you can also type a URL pointing to a website here.

    Hope this helps... Rick

  • Can I turn off the navigation pane in the HTML help permanently?

My company has a web application on the MicroStrategy platform.

I created a WebHelp customized to replace the out of the box using MicroStrategy and which works very well.

We develop the MicroStrategy Office add-in for Excel for our customers.

Once installed, a CHM file is copied to the client's hard drive.

We want to replace this with our own custom help.

I created a CHM file with a subject that redirects clients to our WebHelp customzied with content for the add-in.

One of the subjects has a redirect in the header HTML following code:

    < meta http-equiv = "refresh" content = "0; URL =https://customhelp.htm#AddIn_Introduction.htm"/ > "

That works very well in my tests.

    Here's my problem...

The HTML Help Viewer opens and hides the Navigation pane and displays the WebHelp (navigation pane, the menu bar and topic pane) automatically.

But, the HTML Help Viewer still has the hide/show/hide button for HTML Help navigation pane.

Is it possible to disable this hide or let it stand, but turn off the navigation pane?

As always, any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you-

    Michael F Weart

You should be able to disable in the settings of the window. Make sure that you uncheck the boxes search and Glossary before you uncheck the Index checkbox & OCD. (My quick test seemed to honor these settings, even when they are grey)

  • * $$PlaceHolder$ $* appears where the header should be in the HTML Help topics

I worked on this project for a customer since 2004, update when they update their software.
I've recently upgraded to RH7 and worked on an update on their project. When I build the output HTML help this morning, the header was OK on only the first two topics; then, on the following topics, I was getting warnings "Script error".
I returned in RH7 and checked for files missing etc - everything is OK.
Then I made a menu > tools > update HTML effects that usually sorted any deviation of conduct or earlier versions. New compilation using HTML. Again, the header is normal on the first two topics only, but on all other (100 +) subjects, the heading is replaced by the text * $$PlaceHolder$ $*.
The header includes a table cell with a graphical background and a small graphic in the cell itself.
The two topics that display correctly are at the highest level in the table of contents; all other topics are on the books in the table of contents.
I tried sequence through a value of zero and a value of 1, but same problem. I tried to remove the display of sequences through the generation of output, but the same problem.
Headers not display correctly in preview mode topic.
I tried to delete the model of all subjects and then reapply; and then made a new construction. When I try to run the Help Guide, I get the pane contents in view OK, but the topic starter is empty, and I dialog "error in Script Internet Explorer":

  • Fixing/3rd party, including files in one. CHM file

Is there a way to fix/include. PDF. DOC. XLS. PPT, and. VOD files - in their native format - in one. CHM file? I would like to offer our installers to field with a single. CHM file that contains all the RoboHelp topics and files 3rd - party that they might need. RoboHelp topics contain hyperlinks to these files, which would then open the 3rd party files in a new window (in Word, in Adobe Reader, in Excel, etc.).

I reached successfully the functionality described above for a PDF file by adding to the baggage files and insert a link to it in a topic - when I saw the topic in RoboHelp and click the hyperlink. However, if I generate HTML Help (.) CHM file), the hyperlink is trying to open a new window, but quickly displays a dialog box indicating, "Download cannot be completed." The only option is to click an OK button, which closes the dialog box.

    A. file CHM is the more desirable format, but I take it than any other single file output type to achieve this functionality. Convert these files in HTML format, and their import as new topics are not an option.

I'm under X5.0.2 with RoboSource Control.

    Hi RoboFan,

Yes, you can. Add files to your folder of luggage. But, as in everything, there is a catch. How associate you with the CHM files can be a problem and if I understand correctly, this will depend on the end-user system. You can get Word documents that open in a new instance of Word, prompt to save or open, or open in the CHM window. There are many ways to link to try to force one or the other, but I don't see the coherence between the file types.

I would start by adding the file to luggage, then put in a direct link to the file. To see if it's a behavior that you want to test, and if not to search these forums for the specific file type, you have problems with. PDF files have always been unpredictable for me.

    Good luck

  • Support for HTML Help Viewer toolbar

When I open any chm file in the MS HTML Help Viewer, I have a toolbar at the top of the page. One of the options in the toolbar's 'Options' that has a drop-down list. Most of the items in the drop-down list does not seem to be supported, such as 'Home', 'Stop', 'Update', etc., I don't know yet what it means in the context of the online help. Is this just an artifact of the HTML Help Viewer, or is there something I need to do in the definition of the project or in the generation of the chm file?

    Bob Boller

Well well, thanks to some research on Google, I now have the answer. The following works: "ms-its:path\MyFile.chm::/path/MyTopic.htm." Here, magic is the prefix "ms - its '. I didn't spend enough time in the research to find out exactly what it is, but apparently it has something to do with security.
