  If you are able to ping the websites from the command prompt, it means that your computer connectivity is fine.

  ·         What is the antivirus installed on your computer protection software?

  ·         Have you tried to browse by disabling the firewall?

  Try disabling the firewall on the computer and check if you are able to navigate.

  If this does not work, reset Internet Explorer settings and check if you can browse.

  I have exactly the same problem.  Following the steps above did not work, folders/subfolders unchangeable rest.  I am the owner of the folder and subfolders.  I don't know yet how they became Read-Only to start.  Read-only on the individual files setting works correctly.  Changing the settings of file does not work.

  IMPORTANT EDIT:

  According to a message from the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
  You cannot view or change the read-only or system attributes
  To summarize, Windows does not include system or read-only folders settings (he was aware of these properties on the FILES however).  Individual applications that you use cannot ignore the State of read-only on a folder and can give an error.  In my situation, an application was trying to create a new file in a folder that has been marked read-only and honored the RO parameter and refuses to try to create the new file.

  To actually change these attributes, properties menu will not work.  The KB source:

  • If you click apply changes to this folder only , the read-only attribute is changed for all files in the folder. However, the read-only attribute is not changed for the folder, its subfolders or files in its subfolders.   Tried all the foregoing, including disabling UAC, before activation and connecting the built in Administrator account.  Even so, some programs told me I had no administrative privileges when I tride to execute.  After working in this market and for several days, I have concluded that the problem was related to virus/malware and, given that I could not all my programs/utilities AV running, except those located on bootable disks (none of which were of no help), I simply gave up and did a factory restore on the computer.  Unfortunately I could recover some of the files of the student.

  Sounds like a bad set-up. I would advise to uninstall KB2871389 and put it back manually. Also uninstall McAfee and then retry the update.

  Use Google Nexus 9 with the latest Android. Since one of the recent os updates the keyboard sometimes fails to appear when I enter a text box on a page while using Firefox. This makes research and connections-impossible. Bluetooth virtual and physical keyboards fail to register. It is intermittent.   I am able to install other software, I did a test. Recently migrated from OS 10.4.11 on an eMac Power PC to OS 10.6.6 on an Intel iMac. It is the first security update as I migrated. I trashed the file cert8.db such as recommended on the site and I restarted too, but still cannot install the update. I have not uninstalled Firefox for fear of not being able to re - install. I have not messed with or otherwise worked in the Terminal profile. Is there some handy preference in the trash or what?
