Games PC & Vista

I would definitely buy a game for the laptop, but it is not compatible with Vista. Is there anyway I can bypass this or am I resigned to be too advanced?

The it runs on platforms monte to XP.

Any suggestion or help would be appreciated!

Ross

Whether or not you can get an older game to work on a newer operating system, does not support depends on the game. Without more information the best I can do is point you in the meaning of this:

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

and recommend that you do some research on the web based on the name of the game and Vista comaptibility to see how other people (if any) have got game to work under Vista.

Be sure to check any other requirements for the game too.

The key is that if you buy a game that is advertised as non-compatible and it doesn't work, you've wasted your money - the risk is yours.

    Hi HowBoutThat,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site.

It is quite possible that the game is designed for an earlier version of Windows and is not compatible with Vista.

The only option on the left here is to change the compatibility of the game settings by running the program compatibility Wizard. To manually change the settings of a program, use the individual program's compatibility tab.

    Run the program compatibility Wizard

    1. open the program compatibility Wizard the by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, click programs, and then clicking on use an older program with this version of Windows.

    2. follow the directions in the wizard.

If you are unable to install a program, insert the installation for the program and, using the wizard disk, navigate to the program setup file, usually called Setup.exe, Install.exe, or something similar. The wizard is not designed to work on programs that have an .msi file name extension.
To change compatibility settings manually for a program, right-click the program icon, click Properties, and then click the Compatibility tab.

    Reference:

Make older programs in this version of Windows
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

If changing the settings does not resolve the problem, please go to the website of the manufacturer of the program to see if there is an update of the program.

    Happy new year!

I understand that some freeware games could be like older versions of power and magic, Diablo or Doom/Quake, etc.. I don't mind. Just try not to spend money on the latest and best at the moment. There is more to do in free time. For example: I would be fine if there are something like older versions of two EX or Skyrim or Fallout, Crysis, Age Of Empires, Metroid (SNES), etc. But I understand that I can only ask for so much.

    Hey.

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite P300-1This comes with Vista Home Premium. The problem is that I can't run any game on it. I tried NFS Most Wanted, Battlefield 2 and Titan Quest(theoretically I should have no problems with my configuration-processor P8400, video Ati 3650, drivers up to date).

Have you installed SP1 for Vista and all the other patches?

Are you sure that the drivers up to date? Check this on the Toshiba site and you must use the graphics driver Toshiba because they have protection against overheating.

  • Windows 7 can run games for vista or xp

I'm a gamer have a count with vista, but a lot of my games for xp do not work and do not work properly. So I was wondering if I should get windows 7 or just simply stick with vista for now, because I want something that can run all my games.

    Hey bradman72,

Thanks for posting in the Microsoft answers site!

Windows 7 has a mode called the program compatibility mode.

Program compatibility is a mode in Windows that allows you to run programs written for earlier versions of Windows. Most programs written for Windows Vista are also running Windows 7, but some older programs might run poorly or not at all.

If an older program does not work, the first, and easier, to try is the resolution of the problems of compatibility of programs. It can automatically detect and fix common issues that prevent older programs to install or run correctly.

Check out the link for more details below:

    What is program compatibility?
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/what-is-program-compatibility

To run the program compatibility troubleshooter,

    1. open the program compatibility problems by clicking on the Start button, then Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooting, and then click Troubleshooting. Under programs, click on run programs for previous versions of Windows.
    2. follow the instructions in the troubleshooting.

Make older programs in this version of Windows
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

Windows 7 also supports Windows XP Mode, which allows you to run Windows XP older right on the Windows 7 desktop business software.

    frucstrated,
Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.  First I would make sure your video card drivers are updated.  I know it's a whole new machine, but it is always good to make sure you have the latest version of the driver.  Then can go to the game icon and then right-click on it and select Properties, then the Compatibility tab and then check the box run in compatibility mode.  I would suggest trying to run in Windows XP (SP3) mode first and see if that helps.

  • Installation of games on Vista

I try to install some old games that I have on my new computer with Vista 64 bit.  At HP customer service said that the games are not compatible with Vista.  However, I know that they have no idea what they are talking about.  Games I am trying to install are: Diablo 2, Warcraft 3, C & C Generals, Dungeon Siege 2 and Dawn of War 2.  I tried to install as administrator and have changed the Win XP SP2 compatibility.

However, I still get the messages:

    or

    I would appreciate any input.

    Hello

Welcome to the forum of responses to Windows Vista

Check the compatibility of the game that you are trying to install with the 64 bit version of Windows Vista by yourself. In the Web page mentioned below, there is an option on the selection of top corner left that option first and check their compatibility.

  • Some games do not appear in the category "games" in Vista. Why? :/

I have recently updated from Windows XP to Vista so I kept my programms and games. But the problem is that while my older games are displayed correctly and works fine, games that are specially designed to work on Vista do not appear in the "games" directory. However, they are still working fine. I want to just be organized, that's all. Furthermore, I tried to copy the .exe to "games", but even if the icons have appeared, no information has been collected on games such as the Pegi grades or performance. I activated the option to download the info on the Internet but still not... :( What's weird is the fact that it has met all the info from my old games such as Pegi. But what about games "designed for Vista"? Thnx in advance! : D

Thnx for your reply! I'm glad that I can have rely you on if I never have a problem! Thnx again! : D

  • Games of Vista and the cd does not

I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista and my friend has a Dell with Vista.  She has no trouble loading the cd games but I do and don't know why. Have not been able to use one of my old CDs.  I bought the new software for Vista and sometimes they will load and sometimes not.  I have the Active X.  This particular game that is not downloading is Scrabble. Hate Vista, think to get rid of it.

    Hello Dachsiema,

Thank you for posting.  As you said a friend was able to load the game and have the same type of problem with other drives, it seems you might have a problem with CD/DVD player.  We will test this by trying to copy all the files on the CD to a folder on your computer (create a new folder and copy all the contents of the CD to this folder).  Once you copy all the files, and then try to install the game from the folder.  If there is a problem with your CD drive, the files will not correctly copy to the folder.

Please try this and I would like to know the results. Zack
