Get "access is denied." on Vista business after either connect an Apple iPod, an external hard drive or USB through USB (2.0) ports.

  • an Apple iPod
  • a disc of external data storage
  • a USB

When I connect one of ^ these ports USB in front of my computer the drive letter appears in Windows Explorer, so they are detected, but when I try to access it I always get a message like "H: is not accessible.  Access is denied. »

I had the chance to find http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925196.  But it is a response to a very similar, I think that problem on Windows XP.

And I think that it is better to ask this question rather than follow the instructions for an earlier version of the operating system, yall.  I just want to be able to use / access each of them again and again and again and... could you help me?

Hi Matthew,

1. don't you get the same message when you connect to other ports (behind the CPU)?

2. you remember of any changes to your machine before the question?

3. is your computer connected to a network?

4. have you logged into your account administrator ?
In the meantime, follow these steps.
Step 1:
You can follow the manual procedure, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925196 .
The registry tweak, that applies to Windows XP also applies to Windows 7 If you do it manually.

    Hi Gregory Trinidade,

You can try to create a folder in the C: drive and copy the images on the desktop folder C: drive.  After copy in C: drive then try again copy on external hard drive and see if it works well or not.

Make sure that you have access to the C: drive. Also instead of cut photos copy in another location.

    Hope this information is useful.

  • Catalogue of confusion after the removal of the photos on external hard drive. [was: help!]

I tried to be smart and I bought an external hardrive to free up some space on my laptop.  I transferred all my photos to the hardrive thought that I would be able to work on these photos in lightroom, as long as I had the hard drive plugged into my laptop.  Well this is not the case apparently.  So I imported all the photos into lightroom from the hard drive.  With the hard drive plugged into the laptop I can access all my pictures, but the catalogs that I was editing have lost all their changes.  I tried to open the backup lightroom from yesterday, and nothing happens.  If I select one of my catalogs that none of the images are there, he also says missing photos.  So I tried to locate all missing photos, and nothing happened.  All the photos are in lightroom, they appear in the library under the external hardrive.  But I can't shoot in my catalogs and cannot roll back changes to the photos I was editing when I put all my photos on the external hard drive.

    Hi Amanda,.

You get the workflow a bit confused here. It is hard to follow all of the steps you took, but I will try to explain the correct procedure.

    1. you have a Lightroom Catalog and all images in the catalog pointing to a location on the internal drive (ideally, it would be a series of folders under the folder of a high level, to make it easier to step 3 below).

    2. copy the image of folders containing images of the Interior on the external drive. You now have two copies of your images.

    3. open Lightroom and you should see all your images again. Open the files Panel and right-click on the top-level folder that contains all the image files (this is where a single top-level folder is priceless). Choose 'location of folder update... »

    4. navigate to the top level on the external drive folder and choose that. Your Lightroom Catalog is now oriented to the external hard drive.

At this point, you can go on using Lightroom normally. You can copy, move or delete the images of your internal drive, because Lightroom is their use is no longer.

Note that in step 3 above, if all your image files are not contained in a single top-level folder, you will need to repeat steps 3 and 4 several times, once for each top-level folder.

  • XP hangs after connecting an external hard drive via USB port

When I connect an external hard drive of 250GB via a USB port on my system XP - SP3, the computer crashes immediately after the sound signal from the recognition of a normal connection PnP. There is no assignment of the station. I don't know that he had worked as can be expected before. A new 500 GB external hard drive is recognized as new hardware, the driver installed and ready to use, but after that, the PC shuts down completely new. However, when I do a system startup after connection of the same two drives, everything looks OK. Also, no problem with a USB stick of 2 GB. How to find what's the problem?

Well - it's Windows for you, sometimes. :/

  • Can't restore Vista backup - backup zip files are not recognized, on external hard drive

I backed up my files with Windows Backup, which divide into 200 MB zip files.  Now I am unable to restore the backup because it is not recognized when I try to use the backup to restore.  It's on an external hard drive and Windows for some reason any do not recognize.  I tried to move it to the desktop, but it is not always recognized as a backup.  I tried to use the advanced restore, windows recovery, and it won't work.  Must the file with the zip files be in a specific location on the disk so that it can be recognized, or should it be named something specific?  Please help me, I really need these files.

  • Since the update of Vista on my external hard drive problems

I have a problem with my external hard drive. A week ago I reinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium on my PC. Everything worked very well, my external hard drive, too. But after installing all the new updates and SP2 my external hard drive has problems. If I copy something from her, or just listen to the music is recorded on it, so overall if I work with her, after 1 to 3 minutes it stops working. I have to sign in to get access to it again. But before installing SP2 updates after SP2 everything worked out very well. So I think that there is a problem with SP2 or the following updates. My Pc is a Dell Dimension 9200 and the external hard drive is a Verbatim 1 TB external hard drive and USB 2.0

I tried to bbot with Ubuntu and delete the Autorun.inf. Now everything works fine again.
    Thank you

I am running Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2 Build 6002 on a HP Pavilion dv6704nr laptop. I just bought a WD My Passport Essential 500 GB external hard drive with USB 2.0 for PC connection. When I plugged in there first, it did prompt driver install, then install complete driver. I can't detect the drive in Windows Explorer. In the Device Manager, there is every indication that other devices and when I try to reinstall the driver by right click on the properties icon that I get the driver is not digitally signed my mistake by microsoft. WD provides drivers for this HD as they claim that it is already part of the windows operating system. Please help me get this working properly

    1.< in="" device="" manager="" it="" shows="" up="" as="" other="">
If it appears in the Device Manager in the "Other devices" section, right click on the device, "Uninstall".

    2. in Device Manager, it should appear under the 'USB Bus controllers'. If you can find it there, do a right-click, "Uninstall", then restart your computer.

    3. If this does not work, uninstall everything under USB controllers then reboot they should be reinstalled.

    4.< i="" cannot="" detect="" the="" drive="" in="" windows="">
You may just assign a drive letter for the drive in computer management. Right click "Computer", click on "Manage" under "Computer management", "Storage", click on "disk management". In the right pane, locate the drive, right click then click on «Change drive letter and path...» ", click the"Edit"button and assign a drive letter.

  • Cannot access external hard drive after changing the drive letter in vista

The drive letter for my external hard drive has changed itself, I have tried to change the letter back to what it was, but still cannot access the drive.  Diving is in my computer, but when I try to open it it tell me I need to format.

    Hello

I suggest you to contact the manufacturer of external hard drive for better assistance.

  • Access denied on external hard drive.

I have an external drive, which works perfectly well. But I've just updated from vista to W7, and now I can not access the disk from that specific computer. I get access denied. On the properties, all users have full access. And the funny part is on my other computer, with the exact same OS, the drive works perfectly. So, I expect that there is a setting that I didn't know.
Is there someone with good ideas on how to solve this problem?

Hi I tried your instructions below to restore all my administrator permissions full on my external hard drive.

    1. click on Start , click all programs , and click Accessories .
    2. right click on command prompt , and then click run as administrator .
    3. in administrator: command prompt window.
    4. type
takeown /F (external drive letter) and press ENTER.
    5 type
CACLS (external drive letter) /G Administrator: F and press enter

After that I followed these steps, my computer Windows 7 says that the drive is not accessible.  I plugged it to my old XP computer, and it also says "access denied."  I have a huge amount of important files there and I need to restore access, but I can't find an answer for how to cancel the steps I followed.  Please tell me how to reverse the steps I did your earlier suggestion.

  • Access is denied on external hard drive

Hello. I get the following message appears when I try to access my external hard drive: G:\ Access is denied. However, I can access the hard disk by clicking AutoPlay and choosing the second of the two identical icons labeled as 'open folder to view files '. The problem started when I used of Trend Micro Housecall to remove a virus from the reader. The problem occurs in XP and Vista. I tried to take ownership of the drive, but that isn't helping.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Hello. Thank you both for your help. I tried AVG and AVAST but they do not work, however, I went to my virus scan history and concluded that the virus was in the file autorun.inf on my drive. Then I found a good and quick tool Flash_Disinfector who quickly solved my problem.

    Thanks again for your help

  • Access denied to my external hard drive

I changed the permissions on my external hard drive, and now I am getting an access denied when I click the hard drive icon in my computer. I can't even open the Security tab, on the Properties screen. Please help, this car has a lot of important things about it and I don't know what to do to solve this problem.  I'm using Windows Vista 32-bit, if this is helpful to the solution.

Try to connect the external hard drive on another computer to see if you can access it.  That have you changed permissions for - you can have locked yourself on according to what you then try to be specific on exactlly what you did and what you have changed.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks and good luck!
