Get the error code 641, cannot install Windows updates.
Reluctant to do a reinstall of windows. I had the same problem, find the same useless information on a cure. I did a reinstall of windows (Vista) and partially by installing the updates of windows I ran into the same problem again, the windows installer does not. Even from scratch will get not anywhere, leaving you at least your system as it stands leaves can be used instead of a partially updated with no program system.
I suggest to reset the Windows Update components and check if it helps.
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. I have Vista Home Premium version 6.0 (build 6002 SP2)
Avast antivirus free version running. No anti-malware running. No 3rd party firewall
I got the bill113.exe virus/Trojan horse which has not been detected by the AVG Antivirus that I was running. I think I removed the bill113, and I delete AVG, downloaded Avast, ran so deleted spybot Search and Destroy. Since then-, I am getting error 80072 0n updated.
You can sugest a fix/reset?
Thank you very much
If the computer is already infected, no anti-virus/anti-spyware application installed or working properly.
You have a lot more work to do.
NB: If you had no installed anti-virus application or subscription has expired * when the machine was first infected * and/or your subscription has expired since and/or the machine is not kept fully corrected in Windows Update, don't waste your time with any of the following: Format & reinstall Windows. A repair install won't help!

Original title: error number: 0 x 80070424
Error code 0 x 80070424 you describe also means "ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST". Windows Update depends on the following two services:
(1) Windows Update
(2) background Intelligent Transfer (BIT)
If it turns out that these services are disabled or missing, you will encounter this error code. Therefore, you will need to ensure that the necessary services are available and running. Here's how:
1. click on Start, type services.msc in the Search text box, and then click services.msc in the list programs. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click continue.
2. double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
3. If the starting state lists Stopped, click Start , and then click OK.
4. double-click on Windows Update.
5. If the starting state lists Stopped, click Start , and then click OK.
6. double-click on my computer.
7. If the starting state lists Stopped, click Start , and then click OK.
8. close the Services window and try to install the updates again.
If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service does not appear in the list of Services, click the following link to view the article on the Microsoft web site and download the update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939159/en-us.

The other post:
My problem is on an old computer (not this one) running Windows Vista Home Premium. Show downloads are KB2690729, 2656353, 2656370, 2604111, 2604121, 2656368, 2656045 and 2686827. When I tried to download individually, the first and the third update (above) showed as being downloaded correctly, yet when I checked the list of updates successfully, none of these appeared. Since that time, the system generated downloads 8 updates have been fruitless.
Like the other reviewers, I run IOL System Mechanic and have noted your comments about the interaction between the SM and windows. Personally, I hesitate to attempt changes to the registry based on the stories of war, with that I've heard of people who do not have the knowledge/experience/skill to work in the more than causing registty problems they started. I have not contacted LIO, wondering if this was done either by Microsoft with others who have similar problems.
I hope that you have more tips to share what to do: this problem.
Thanks for your help.
I combined the message you did in another thread to this original to avoid confusion.
In response to another poster asking if System Mechanic caused their code error 641, one of our MVP, PA bear MS MVPreplied with this:
There is no doubt in my mind that System Mechanic caused this!
And you have plenty of company, too. See these recent discussions-online
OPTION A: If you have backups of ALL System Mechanic has EVER done on your computer changes, restore ALL the & restart and test - and then uninstall System Mechanic & some other registry cleaners.
OPTION B: Execution of RESOLUTIONS methods 1, 2 and 3 in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2642495 then reboot & test.
OPTION C: Contact System Mechanic (iolo.com) support, assuming you have purchased System Mechanic Professional.
TIP: If you still think again your registry database must be cleaned, repaired, amplified, to the point, healed, twisted, fixed, enlarged, "swept" or optimized (it isn't), read http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw your own conclusions. Since the thread here.
I hope this helps!
I'm running Vista window 6 service pack 2 32-bit. None of the 8 steps for further research for this error worked. I tried the regfix_vista.reg and the msiserver.reg proposed corrections and will continue to receive the error code 641. I spent weeks and weeks on this and nothing works. I want to give up. Everyone knows the same problem? I uninstalled the e/s from my list of software system mechanic who had been previously suggested as being the culprit for this problem...Perry
System Mechanic is your troublemaker & you have lots of company!
See my colleague Maurice RESPONSE message in this thread: http://answers.microsoft.com/thread/d6fedf33-dc1b-451f-9aab-97429f916180
If still no joy, contact System Mechanic (iolo.com) supported for assistance-, they are well aware of the problem posed their candidacy.
TIP: If you think that more never your registry database needs to be cleaned, repaired, boosted, to the point, healed, twisted, fixed, magnified, "swept" or optimized (and even more to convince that it is not), read http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw your own conclusions. Note 2: The data available on bad sectors may be lost when chkdsk attempts to repair your hard drive.
Note 3: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
Please follow these recommended steps, review the additional information provided and post back if you still have the problem. I will be happy to provide you with additional options.
