  You are just problems to keep you some photos in LR 3 and others in LR 6, as well as of course, you would need to keep the two software installed on your computer. I see no benefit to this. I see many benefits, saw the pictures in the catalogue LR 6 and keeping software on your computer.

  'Could not initialize installation' could indicate a corrupted download. If you haven't done so already, try the following steps:

  1. Uninstall Lightroom 6: How to manually uninstall the Lightroom
  2. Use the Adobe Cleaner tool to remove the remains of program use the Adobe Creative Cloud cleaning tool to solve installation problems
  3. Download a new copy of Lightroom 6 to install Photoshop Lightroom
  4. Try reinstalling the program.

  If, after re-downloaded, you keep getting the same error, I recommend you to review the installation log files to identify the specific error: Troubleshooting Adobe Creative Suite install problems with log files.

  Anyone who gives release dates is only guessing. Those who are under a confidentiality agreement not to give this information. On the other hand, someone could know for sure. If you can use the DNG Converter and then get satisfactory results with Lightroom 3, it may be worth the wait. But there are really significant improvements in Lightroom 5. If you are a professional and customer-critical to do you can consider at least using the 30 day trial of Lightroom 5 to make this work. Then you can decide if you need to upgrade or if you can afford to wait. The trial of 5 Lightroom will install in addition to what you have now and let Lightroom 3 fully functional. 5 Lightroom will modernize the catalogue, but this will be a new copy and leave the unchanged original Lightroom 3 catalog.

  It is not necessary to first uninstall Lightroom 3.

  You can switch to Lightroom 6 > install and update your catalog and once you're used to it, you can uninstall Lightroom 3 to free up space on your system.

  You need not install LR3, if your goal is to install version 6.  When you install and activate the version 6, you will have the possibility to choose 3 as the release candidate.
