Hard drive Mac and PC compatibility

Hi, I just bought a new MacBook Pro that runs on Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.5. The computer I used before is a Dell XPS 13 10 Windows running. I have a 1 external Toshiba Canvio Slim ii hard drive to keep everything. I know that, so that my hard drive Toshiba be compatible with the new OS X, it must be formatted, but I will be losing all my data (260 GB total). I want to know if this option works for me:

I bought a LaCie 1 TB hard drive Portable Porsche Design with my new computer. Am I able to format my LaCie hard drive to have read/write on PC and Mac, then after it is formatted successfully, I plug it into my Dell with my Toshiba hard drive computer, drag and drop my data from my hard drive to my drive Toshiba hard LaCie (using my computer Dell Windows), and then have everything on my LaCie hard drive ready to be read or written on my new MacBook Pro (Mac) and on my Dell XPS (PC)?

If not, what are my other options?

My main goal is to be able to use one of these hard drives on my Mac and PC without having all my data erased. The trick is to get one of these drives compatible to use for my Mac and PC if I need to turn off the power from one to the other without losing my data. In addition, I want to be able to have all of my data stored on these drives ONE and not both. I want all in one place, rather than in two separate places.

Thank you

Ramin

Windows in your Dell himself player will be in NTFS format. Standard a Mac can read NTFS but cannot format or write on NTFS. I have no idea what format the Lacie will come initially as, but for arguments sake lets say it will be HFS + which is the standard format used by Macs. Like standard Windows can't read or write disks HFS +.

It is possible to format a hard drive on a Mac (or PC) as a format ExFAT. This format is readable and writable by Mac and PC. It cannot be used as a startup disk either on, or can it be used as a Time Machine backup of Mac disk. ExFAT is however very well to use as a disk transfer.

It is possible to get additional software for the Mac to put into shape and the read/write to NTFS volumes. See https://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/

It is possible to get additional software for Windows to allow it to format and write to HFS volumes +. Seehttp://www.mediafour.com/software/macdrive/

Seagate, a maker of hard drives made a deal with Paragon Software as listed above. This agreement means a disk Seagate comes already formatted in NTFS and includes a copy of 'free' the Paragon on all your Mac software to read and write on this NTFS drive. See http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/ntfs-driver-for-mac-os-maste r - dl /

I'd be a little worried about the above 'free' copy of Paragon Software in that a) is it still news?, and b) is the version of the software up to date so that it still works in El Capitan on a Mac. Older versions of the software will not work in El Capitan.

A different approach, you might consider using "Migration Wizard" of Apple software to transfer files over a computer network between Macs and Windows PCs. See move your data from a Windows PC to Mac - Apple Support and the Migration of Windows Wizard v1.0.5.7 the concern here is that this tool does not appear to have been updated for Windows 10, it may or may not work so in Windows 10.

  • Hard drive failed and I lost my product key?

    Hi guys,.

So my friends hard drive failed and unfortunetly he lost everything.

I replaced the broken hard drive for him and reinstalled Windows 10. However when I went to check if the OS has been activated, it showed as not been activated? I thought the machines after that Windows 8 had their licance saved in the BIOS, so we do not have this problem?

Also there is no sticker on the back or under the battery that contains the product key for Windows.

I also talked to Microsoft, but they were uable to help.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Thank you.

Then the second option mentioned above. Didn't it actually triggered successfully after 10 win upgraded?

If so, you should be able to activate just fine without problems, IF you use the same edition of Windows. You write it housed 8.1 - you now install Win 10 Home? You mentioned 10 Pro down...

So I guess I'll with your third option and using the recovery media?

I have 2 HP drives here for Windows 10 Pro for two different HP devices. I think these are the recovery CD, it says that they cotain the client software, if that is correct? Can I use these discs Pro on a BONE at home? Or that I'd be better by following the links you provided?

Laughing out loud. I'm sorry. I am afraid that you cannot mix just DVD / CD / etc - they are for a specific model for the specific version of Win / edition. You cannot use a recovery media for HP computer to another - it will simply not work 99% of the time. You cannot mix editions of Windows (the House is for Home, Pro goes to Pro).  You want the recovery media for this unit, you need to follow the links.

However, IF you have enabled the upgrade of Windows 10 post fine, you can simply download Win 10 ISO from here:

    > > https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/

Download the tool, it will download an ISO and burn it to a DVD or write on a USB key. Follow the on-screen instructions, skip entered the key and move on. After installation, Windows 10 HOME should activate fine using digital entitlement if 8.1 Home Win allowed initially.

I would like to know how this goes for you.

You cannot merge libraries without third party software - Photos of power can merge pictures libraries

You can migrate iPhoto libraries to libraries of Photos by dragging Photos icon in the Dock

  • HP Pavilion Notebook Hard drive question and OS reinstall

I have a HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx Entertainment Notebook PC, series: CND0053PFN.

I recently received an error message of the INTELLIGENT notification that a failure of the hard drive was imminent (I also had a flat battery as well, thank YOU HP!). I backed up my files to an external hard drive to COMPUSA, bought a new hard drive and installed. I inserted one of my computer come with recovery disks (HP or Best Buy made so I can't make new ones if I wanted to). After a minute or two of hearing the reader has read that I received an error "No Bootable disc - insert boot disk and press any key." Tried several times more. Reorganize the BIOS settings to make the drive to read first, no help.

I then came here, looked at a few other discussions. They were no help. (this is a as http://h30434.www3.HP.com/T5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-e-g/no-bootable-Device-Insert-Boot-Disk-and-... I watched)

I tried most of the things on this page, including download of the boot disk utility, but even after the creation of this disc, I still get the "No Bootable disc - insert the startup disk, and then press any key" error. I then put the old hard drive new, and played music CDs to ensure that my drive was reading. It did not work properly. He also burned a disc as well so I think it's OK.

I tried to make an iso image to the new disk plugged hard upward with a USB connection and this is where I met another problem. My laptop said that there are only 98 GB available on the new drive connected by USB. It is a 250 GB drive.

What can I do to get just my copy of Windows on the new drive, so I can use my laptop without fear of a hard drive failure in the middle of a test for the College or something like that?

    Thank you.

    Hello:

I can't help with the problem of recovery disk, but if you can read the product key 25 character Microsoft Windows on the bottom of your PC, you can do your own installation of W7 (DVD or a flashdrive bootable) media.

    Here's how:

If you can read the Microsoft windows 7 25-character product key, you can download simple Windows 7 ISO files to burn on a DVD for the version of windows that is installed on your PC, and which is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC case.

Burn the ISO with the option to burn the ISO on your DVD burning program and burn it at the slowest possible speed that will allow your program. This will create a bootable DVD.

Or use the installation of Windows 7 USB/DVD tool to compile the ISO file that you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB compilation method.

    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/HTML/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

Use 25 characters on the PC product key to activate the installation.

The key will activate a 32 or 64 bit installation.

Then go to the support of the PC and driver page to install the drivers you need.

Link to downloads ISO of W7 is below.

    Configurations to two hard disks:

    ● 2 TB: (1 TB 5400 RPM x 2)

    ● 1500GO: (750 GB 5400 RPM x 2)

This seems to mean that I cannot use a single hard drive 2 TB 2 and cannot use a 7200 RPM drive.

Is this correct? Bios denominator do not allow more than a drive of 1 TB or the 7200 RPM?

CouldI partition just the 2nd 2-1 TB disk?

Or the manual simply means that the standard unit of HP is not provided with larger than these sizes and I could actually use a 2 TB in the Bay of 2nd?

It's the last... the list says just what HP sale: it does not describe a limitation of the system. However, I do not think that yet, the market offers a 2 TB drive that fits the available space. 2 TB 2.5-inch SATA drives I've seen are too thick. 7200 rpm or hybrid SSD; No problem.

To add a second drive you'll need a second hard drive enclosure and cable.

The right part for the hard drive kit is 681976-001. The website of the laptop stand is on HP Sweden so run on google.co.uk part number (or your Swedish). I found the cheapest on us amazon for $38 or £42.

Contact the manufacturer of your computer.

Look on the side/back if a desktop computer; down if a laptop.

Also look on any packaging the VistaDVD came, if you bought it yourself.

If the product key is lost, we can NOT help you replace.

    Yes.

    Not at all.

    N °

If you have Windows 7 with an OEM license agreement (it came pre-installed on the computer is the most likely scenario for this, but you can buy OEM copies so) or you have a license to retail (upgrade or full version) - the way your question is worded is very specific - you * can * install Windows 7 costs/clean on this same system as much as you wish.  A new hard drive won't stop you activation - well that at some point, you need to activate by phone, as opposed to over the Internet.

Now - if the motherboard is replaced and it's licensed OEM and replacement was not that of the OEM that probably set up your computer...  Then you have a problem.

Unless you happen to have a license of Windows 7 retail sales, so it is not related to the computer (motherboard).
