He protected by password sharing request a password every time?

I have installation public file protected by password sharing on Windows 7 computers and domestic Windows 8 on my network. Everything works fine. I do not use a homegroup.

On the Windows 7 computer, the first time that I tried to share files in the public folder of Windows 8 asked me to enter the password for my user account of Windows 8. Similarly, on the computer of Windows 8, the first time that my son has tried to share files in the public folder of Windows 7 asked him to enter the password for the user account Windows 7. No problem.
However, since that first time, none of us asked a password to share public folders. Is this correct? In other words: protected by password sharing should ask for a password each time you want to share, or only time first ?

It is only meant to ask the first time, and it adds the password your password database to stored passwords.  The password vault is not very well known, but you can access it by typing 'panic room' in your Start menu and see all your saved passwords.
