Help! I can't get on the internet - Pavilion a220n Windows XP

Everything seems to be in working order, but when I click on Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, I get the white screen that says: could not connect to the internet.  I got two new modems to Comcast, because they thought it might be a modem problem and had a tech out home Comcast to test new modems.  It determined his test that modems work correctly and my IP address is correct (after having released it renew).  It disables my firewall (Kaspersky), but still could not get on the internet.  It suggests that there is probably something simple that is wrong with the settings on my computer, but he can't do something, because he will be in trouble if he saw anything else with my computer.

I go to the HP website and follow the directions under the "resolution of the cable, DSL or other broadband Internet connection problems (Windows 98, ME and XP)."  When I get to step 6, I type "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" after the prompt on the black command screen.  I get answers "" could not load the programme of assistance following DLL: NAPMONTR. "» DLL", and" "could not load the programme of assistance following DLL: DOT3CFG."» DLL.  I leave command prompt and try to go on the internet and still can not.

Then, I go to my network connections and select my Internet Protocol and select "obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server automatically", click OK, restart my computer, and then I still can't get online.

I call HP and they help me without load me $59 from my computer is way past it's guaranteed.  My computer is about 5.5 years, but I have installed extra RAM on this subject, so he must have a slightly more useful life.

    The answers I got from this site has been wonderful.  Finally the last part of the fix was this.  Avast says afd.sys has been infected, so I said delete it.  I looked and he was always there.  So I went to Windows\system32\drivers\afd.sys and renamed.  Problem solved.  All in all, I removed about 10 viruses but the rootkit fought back and wouldn't remove it Avast.  Once I did that, Avast! and Microsoft msert.exe said that I own.  All the anti spyware said that I own.  I can see with a wire and wireless internet.  You are great
