High availability without shared storage?

Hi all

We have created two new 5.1 without any network vMotion ESXi servers and no shared storage. Client asked for high availability of virtual machines. There are few things that we can look at in this situation as FT and HA, but I know that they will not work without shared storage. VSA is also another option in this case, but it is not flexible and has more limitations than benefits.

Just check there at - there another solution we can us to provide high availability for virtual machines.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Greetings

Nick

Without storage shared (or ASB), it is difficult to provide high availability. Maybe vSphere replication is an option, if you can accept the loss of the latest changes, when it comes to the last line.

You can mix into clusters hosts all desired, even Intel and AMD at least that you enable EVC on the cluster (of course, HA or DRS require shared storage compatible/CPU). However, you need not to have even just cluster hosts to migrate virtual machines through vMotion between them.

migrate web vmware machines without any downtime?

Don't know what this "web vmware' but yes, because ESXi 5.1, you can use"enhanced vMotion"to live migrate virtual machines without service interruption from one host to another, even without shared storage:

Migration with vMotion in environments without shared storage

The usual vMotion requirements apply. Also you can only live migrate virtual machines from the old host to the new hosts because of different generations of CPU (and back as long as you don't have bike powered virtual machines on new hosts).

  • HA without shared storage

    Hello world

I have a client who requires a HA solution without shared storage.  They are a security monitoring company and regulation requires that it have automatic failover, but the far should not share storage.

I have trouble finding a product that replicates and monitors the ESX Server to ensure automatic failover.  vReplicator is not a function of automatic failover.  VCenter HA and pi both methods require storage share.

We have even looked at the two SAN with replication, but same Site Recovery Manager is a manual failover process.   Not to mention two without 3 virtual machine is just over kill.  The three VM would be very low use, both a Windows and a linux OS.

    Any suggestions?

If you don't want to use a shared storage, you can consider looking virtual storage devices (virtual ISCSI SAN). You can use the internal memory on your ESX host and turn it into an ISCSI SAN. With this, you will be able to use HA...

Learn about FalconStor, Lefthand, Datacore, melody of San...

For replication based on the host also consider taking a look at the latest version of CA XOSOFT

    Hope this helps

  • Free/busy options high, with no shared storage

Here is a little history on our Setup. CurrentY we run vmware server 2.0 on centos 5.4 on both servers in a data center to remove. Currently, what we are doing is a manual process to a level of poormans HA. We create a snapshot of the virtual machine (sometimes) and you use rsync to synchronize the virtual machine on the other server. Each server has 2 mirrored disks and disk 1 not mirrored. If each server synchronizes the reader not mirrored.

I have a key for the company left, I wonder what would be my options for maximum availability with the two servers and HA. We would like to have the opportunity to have HA and FT, but the shared storage is not an option right now.

    Thank you!

All VMware high availability options require a shred storage.

You can create virtual shared storage on warehouses of local data (updated mirror network) with the Virtual SAN PHDVirtual, HP Lefthand VSA or StarWind iSCSI.

  • Share resources between the 2 ESX 4.0 hosts without shared storage

    Hello guys,.

I have the following question, I want to clarify.

Imagine that we have 2 host ESX 4.0 with more functional license acquired (HA, VMotion, DRS, etc.)

The two physical servers are identical. Don t have access to any kind of shared storage (San, no iSCSI, NAS no, etc.)

In host #1 I installed all the virtual machines using local storage.

Is it posible to use the host #2 resources (memory and CPU) to give more power to accommodate #1.

My doubt is if it is posible to have a VM installed in local HD in home #1 and using RAM or / and CPU host # 2.

Just do a cluster between the two hosts to empower the host #1 resources (not use DRS or functions of Vmotion)

Let me know if I explained in a good way or not.

Hope someone can clarify this for me.

    Thanks in advance

It is not possible, even if you have the shared storage.

There is no possibility that allows you access to CPU and memory of 2 resources different hosts.

    See you soon,.

  • vSphere high availability with no shared storage? And general problems with VMware partner supplier

HA can function without shared storage?

It may not by the availability of vSphere manual.  However the global VMware partner who sold me on VMware solution said that the shared storage is not required for HA.

This is the same guy who told me that I would not need to buy Windows Server licenses because everything was included in the package (vSphere Essentials Plus).  Now, I have no Windows license, no shared storage and a customer who will not be happy that we did not include these costs in the citation for this project.

HA can function without shared storage?

No.... you need a storage shared for HA.

Maybe your partner speak the vCenter Server Appliance that is included on vSphere Essentials Plus and you can use this device to manage your vSphere, ESXi without need a VM of Windows (with Windows license) to install the vCenter server.

Hi everyone, iam configuration lab and I need shared storage

I want to know if I can share a Director on one of my servers esxi and use it as a shared storage

    mmjaboor wrote:

How to make a server esxi storage shared among other esxi servers

You mean like we use openfile on a windows or linux box to provied storage lun with free space on them, like that on ESXi.

TAT is then not possible. But still, you can create a virtual machine set up all the storage, installing openfile or starwind, from there, you can give access to shared another esxi storage.

    or

    Installing vcenter

    create the cluster

every 2 or 3 esxi, who owns the local data store.

now install vmware storage appliance - through you can make use of all the local data store to be shared across all the esxi.

  • OBIEE Disaster Recovery can be configured without CARS and shared storage?

    Hi people,

As say the topic, I'm looking for advice on disaster recovery. What I find in the docs pointing me to the high availability configuration, or maybe I'm simply not find the docs I'm looking for. And it always points to the RAC, etc. of shared storage. My database is already configured to Dataguard and I want to do things this way, with a recovery site which isn't always upwards and a part of a cluster (although it's very well as long as the CAR is not involved), I'm looking for some feedback on how people do things. I have 11.1 now, but will be upgrading to 12.2 soon.  Just a straight stitch to the documentation would be useful if I'm missing just that.

    Thank you

    -Adam

Since you have already configured Dataguard and in a DR situation, you will be switching/switch on your course in standby mode and it will active db. All this is fine. You can do the same with instances of weblogic OBIEE. You can clone your binaries installed using tools provided by Oracle cloning, or build binaries from weblogic with the accurate determination of drive on your Dr. use the pack of weblogic server and then unzip tool to archive your entire weblogic domain and it Unarchive in your prepared DR server.

Now, you have to just challenge the hostname (s) of your domain to point to your database JDBC data sources and weblogic.

To facilitate the task, you can change the host name used by weblogic to host alias that can be remapped in DNS during DR. Similarly, you can change the JDBC connection string so that it can automatically select the active database as long as you use a database instead of a SID service name in the connection string.

You will need to regularly make a pack on your weblogic domain in order to maintain an up-to-date backup of your domain proximity. Similarly, if you have reports that are stored on the file system, they must also be backed up regularly so that they can be restored.

  • Must all weblogic application servers share storage to implement high availability?

I would like to understand if it takes a shared storage for all application servers that will run weblogic + oracle Identity Manager.  I used the following guides to oracle: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E40329_01/doc.1112/e28391/iam.htm#BABEJGID and http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/availability/maa-deployment-blueprint-1735105.pdf and my interpretation, both speak to configure all application servers with access to a shared storage.  From an architectural point of view, this means the entire application servers need access to an external hard drive?  If shared storage is necessary, what are the steps to implement?

    Thank you

You can do it and it will work. But products of Fusion Middleware GDE to provide guidelines to help you implement high availability.

Having a shared storage will help you recover from the failure of storage, otherwise this could be a point of failure.

    Enterprise Deployment Overview

"An enterprise deployment Oracle Fusion Middleware:

    • Consider various business service level agreements (SLA to make best practices high availability there is as widely as possible)
    • Operates databases servers of grid and grid storage in low-cost storage to provide a very flexible, lower cost infrastructure
    • Uses the results of impact studies of performance for various configurations to ensure that the architecture of high availability is configured optimally to perform and that adapts to the needs of companies
    • Allows control over the length of time to recover from a failure and the amount of acceptable data loss of a natural disaster
    • Evolves with every version of Oracle and is completely independent of the hardware and operating system"

  • It is possible and effective: high availability (failover) on 2 guests with local storage?

    Hello

I have a discussion on the implementation of ha (failover) with 2 guests with local storage.

My advice is to go with a shared storage. But there is another view, use the cluster failover MS with local storage service to save on the shared storage hardware.

2 "mirorred" on each host machines. Is it feasible at all?

The HughesNet: have 2 virtual machines (SQL server and server applications in a highly available environment). The workload of the machines will be raised to 2 very powerful servers that are supposed to be buying.

    1. Please briefly explain a feature of local storage to provide HA.

    2. I got to cluster in the virtual environment, not so I guess that the shared storage is used only in the virtual environment.

    Thank you.

    Michael.

There is software that can replicate a running, physical or virtual machine to another accessible location on the network. This could be as simple that between two close hosted ESXi of VMS or high-speed WAN. Take a look at things like neverfail, doubletake others.  The costs would probably be a bit prohibitive in a smaller environment. It might be possible and maybe even practice to use a virtual storage device having a failover replication. Use of storage on each host and allows to provide the data store. Open-e

    Hello

We do not really recommend using disc shared according to HA with TimesTen since it is a bit complex to install and (b) is not officially a "supported" configuration Also, failover and recovery times are usually much longer than with a HA configuration based on TimesTen replication. I would like to invite you to consider using the TimesTen for HA replication. That's what it is designed for, and this is the recommended approach.

  • VSphere hosts high availability 2

    Hi all

I am trying to achieve the following by using the essential plus the package. I had 2 identical machines with 2 TB of storage. The two are running ESXI and I want to configure high availability and load the pendulum. From what I've read on for them is that vmware needs shared storage so kind of san if I want to use high availability. But I don't have this machine, what I want to achieve is the following: Vmware reflects the discs on both machines (network raid 1) and if a hardware failure occurred on one of them, the other machine will start all the vm remaining. In the same way vmware should do load balancing. From what I've read on the internet vmware had VSA, but this has been discontinued. VSAN is not an option, because I don't have 3 machines. One possible option would be for example starwind but I would have preferred an option of vmware itself.

So in short it is a way to configure high availability and load with 2 hosts balancing and not shared storage? Preferably without third party software.

    Kind regards

    Sebastian Wehkamp

Technically, you can use DRBD and Linux (or FreeBSD and POLE if you're on the dark side of the Moon) to create a device block tolerant replication between a pair of virtual machines running on a hypervisor nodes. Throw in

failover NFSv4 point mounting on top and you have a nice VMware VM data store. Tons of a defined software storage vendors have exactly this ideology within their virtual storage devices if you do not go to the difference

However as StarWind Virtual SAN is FREE for the installation of 2 knots in the scenario of VMware (Hyper-V licensing is different if you care) and can be run on a free Hyper-V Server (no need to pay for licenses of Windows), you CAN end up with a faster

back from road StarWind. Depends on what you want from a set of functionality (iSCSI? NFS? SMB3? Online dedupe? Cache?) and what forum do you prefer for public support to ask questions

    --

Thank you for your response. I thought that since preparations are exactly the same secondary machine would be able to easily start the vm of lost. For synchronization, I thought it would be something like drbd, when unable to connect with the other secondary hosts will become primary. This works in the case of a hardware failure, and network failure half a brain will take place that must be resolved manually. I play with it replicaton and reconsider the starwind software.
