Home environment, direct attached eSATA or iSCSI/NFS 1 single?

Greetings...

Today, I am running ESXi 3.5u4 on my server at home, plans to move to ESXi 4.0 in a few months.  Right now, I'm flying without a net - no disk redundancy.  The server is not the space of the slot to add a good RAID card (it's a Shuttle XPC), I'm looking to go with an external RAID device.  I am considering a device that got both eSATA and 1GbE onboard (QNAP TS - 439 Pro).  If I go with it as a NAS, I'll plug 1 port of the NAS directly to a port 1GbE dedicated on the server, run frames, etc., leaving the 2nd port on the NAS connected to the management network.

I run 5 VMs full-time, no not particular disc, i/o intensive, other than the file server that my wife and I use, and it's only a little time.  If I SIN instead of direct connection, I see a noticeable loss of performance?  If this isn't the case, should I be looking at iSCSI or NFS?

So that I do not see a big performance hit, I'd rather go NAS, so he would give me a little extra flexibility to connect to other systems for the time machine backups, etc.  I'm leaning towards NFS, since iSCSI, if I remember involves stuffing a SCSI inside TCP frame, no. generals, creating news?

The differences in performance between NFS and iSCSI would be minimal on a smaller device. Extended frames may also be minimum value, but your tests that prove. NFS is much simpler to install and use. Is there a lot of contention for disk access then you will start having performance problems. There is not a lot of processor or controller in these devices and no drive of caching (secure disk cache).

We implement a VSphere environment 5.5-3 hosts directly connected to an MSA 2040 with iSCSI.  Attached host to the MSA a question directly or have us use switches?  Our equipment provider said

"in order for the volumes of VMWare to have access through shared storage needs through a switch. You can run questions where if they are directly attached, then the VMDK on the single host may not be seen or accessible on other hosts (high availability or Vmotion). »

    Also

"Support from direct attach to the msa via iSCSI is dependent on the BONE."  Some OS support other don't. MSA does not directly connect to Vmware via iSCSI. "

I talked to HP directly and they claim to direct connection via iSCSI is supported with the MSA 2040 and VMware.

Is anyone running this configuration that can put my mind at ease?

    Thank you.

    Hello

Yes, you can use a directly attached MSA 2040.

I use this configuration yourself by using DAC 10 GB cables, also sold this solution to customers.

Please note that each host must have 2 connections to the San (if the SAN has two controllers). Each host must have a connection to each controller on the SAN.

4 directly attached hosts is supported (the controllers have 4 ports on each one).

Please note that several subnets must be used and configured to allow a correct path discovery. A BIG note to stress also is DO NOT USE the PORT iSCSI MAPPING!

Be sure to activate the Robin. Please note that you will see an active path perform I/O by the data store (since only one controller has a volume), but in case of rupture of the cable, or controller failure, there are switched to the other controller.

I use this setup for a few years and I love it!

  • Fully connecting directly attached data warehouses in a cluster of ESXi?

I have deployed two identical 5.1 ESXi hosts (servers Dell PowerEdge r720xd) each to 5,46 with storage to direct connection. They are both currently enrolled in our vCenter Server 5.1 and participate in a HA cluster. Their respective databases are also members of a group of data store.

Each host is connected to its own data store, but not the other host data store. This effectively disables most of the HA/DTS features, and connection status of host for each data store is marked with a warning for missing connections. We have desire of VM migration and load balancing between the two hosts and the warehouses of data to be as homogeneous and transparent as possible.

My question is simple: what is the most practical and effective way to establish the necessary connections to reach a State fully connected to hosts and data warehouses?

    Hello

in this case you need something like a virtual appliance that uses your local storage to make it a shared storage. Your hosts can then access the storage via iSCSI/NFS. At the end of the day, you will have the space of a single node left (CT ~ 5.46), because the device (s) will reflect your data for more security against failure of the host.

The easiest way would probably be the vSphere Storage Appliance

But there are also other solutions as a virtual of DataCore and HP StoreVirtual VSA facility.

  • HP585 direct attached mirroring of the issue table

Hi, am new to the forum so forgive me if I am committed any misstep

We have two servers HP DL585 (amd opteron) with Direct-attached storage bays (attached via a scsi cable), we want to create an environment from virtual machines using ESX 3.5 (this is whats available us - packed) we have also all vmware tools put at our disposal, but no other budget to spend on of NAS\SAN

Is there a way to create a mirror between the two machines (and tables so to speak) for failover is possible if we're going down or something similar - I think that HP storageworks storage mirroring for this, but nothing to VMware build to do the job?

We will install the version of ESX on the disks (mirrored) hard local and the slices VM on the array (raid 5)

You can check with HP. It may be possible to use the MSA70 in any of these two DL585. You may need a few extra bits of a license, but?

  • Connect FI two directly attach FCoE storage and SAN switches

Nobody tells me if I can connect FI two directly attach FCoE and SAN storage switches also, as you can see in the diagram of connected network?

If so, should I FC Switch function Mode? Any concerns should I consider?

Or the best solution would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The UCS will be in Switch Mode FC, which means that it has a default area.  We cannot make a Zone merge with Brocade because we have no control to set up specific items such as domain and other articles CF IDS that need to be changed when you connect a Cisco FC switch to a Brocade.

Usually in this situation with a 5 k or a MDS you might be placed in mode of interoperability, which changes the default settings and we will talk to them together - in this case, you can't change these settings, so the only supported configuration is CF Cisco at Cisco.

    See you soon,.

  • VMware and EMC 5300 Direct attached

VMWare 5.0 using EMCVNX5300 direct attached SAN.

I want to install Windows 2008 Virtual Macines that will host the video surveillance system.  Archiving requirements video call flat for up to 10 TB of storage from the video files.

My question is how best to configure the LUNS on SAN VMFS or RDM?  With VMFS, I would have to introduce several 2 TB LUN and through the Windows Disk Manager to extend the volume.  If I use RDM am still limited to 2 TB virtual disk file?

I want to keep the simplified system, but I have to take into account the needs of e/s for video archiving for up to 150 HD cameras.

Welceom to the community = with vsphere 5, you can submit more than 2 TB LUN actually up to 64 TB - so I would use RDMs with 10 TB raw LUNS to the virtual machines - note, you will still need a VMFS data store to house the VMDK file pointer that will redirect the r/w on raw LUNS

  • Cisco UCS Direct Attached ISCSI Storage access upstream to storage array

I'm doing my first installation of UCS with a chassis 5108) and (4) B200 M3 blade and (2) 6248 fabric interconnects. The plan is to connect our EMC VNX directly on the fabric of interconnections as the chassis will be the only system for access to the SAN, after migration from our current system. The fabric interconnects will be transmitted to (2) 4500-X switches configured in a vs.

In my research of best practices and general deployment guidelines I noticed the need to create (2) separate iscsi VLANS for fabric and a fabric in B. I'm guessing that this requirement is the lack of STP as YEW is configured in EHM, but I was not able to find an exact answer. Any idea would be appreciated.

My main question and my concern is that if I create a second VLAN ISCSI on our X 4500 and then create both of these VIRTUAL on FI networks A & B I'll be able to connect the SAN to the UCS as well as our former VMware cluster (we are migrating our system HP Compute and storage UCS 5.5 environment) in order to facilitate the vMotions of storage?

I noticed the need for iscsi separated (2) VLAN a fabric and a fabric B

If I understand your question: can a host attached to 4500 (connected to the UCS FI), access LUNS on the VNX, which is directly connected to the UCS fabric interconnect through lanes (EHM FI) material? YES! I would accept this for a migration, but not forever, because it means that traffic on the fabric of interconnection.

  • subnet VMkernel iSCSI for direct-attached storage

    Hello

I have two hosts esxi 6.0 that I connect to a shared via iSCSI storage. I followed this document technical http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vmware-multipathing-configuration-software-iSCSI-port-binding.pdf#sthash.7bztDoAS.dpf to configure interfaces iSCSI on the esxi with binding ports host. No problem.

I use HP MSA 2040 with a dual controller and I'll connect two hosts directly on the shared storage. As for the hardware, according to the documents on best practices, it is recommended to follow a vertical subneting for ports of controllers. However, I have not found no requirement for iSCSI ports in vmware, all of the examples I found configure each vmkernel port in a different subnet, as I did:

    vSwitch0

    iSCSI1 - vmk2 - 192.168.1.11 (unused vmk3)

    iSCSI2 - vmk3 - 192.168.2.11 (unused vmk2)

So, my question is vmkernel ports are in different subnets? or could they be in the same subnet with no difference performance wise?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

in your case, because you are trying to achieve Multipathing to iSCSI Software initiator, the vmkernel ports should be in the same subnet.

  • A NETWORK OK card for the test at home environment?

I wanted to install ESX 4.0 on my computer at home, just for learning purposes. It's an Asus P6T with i7 920 and 12 GB of RAM. Unfortunately, Marvell onboard network card is not supported by ESX. If I want to buy a CHEAP NETWORK card that is officially supported so I can play with ESX. ESX installs with a single NETWORK card? I know that this is not recommended, but it is a test without vmotion environment, etc. Or ESX, physically, requires more than one network interface card install even?

Intel Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter is very cheap and on ESX 4.0 HCL, but has a single port.  Oh, and I can't run ESX inside the workstation because I need to test the client 64-bit VMs, which you can't do inside Workstation 6.5.2.

    Thoughts?

Yes like you don't tell a 'best practice', but you should be fine for a test environment.

I would get another NETWORK card if you were doing well for storage at home if... but even you CAN do with a card NETWORK ISCSI or NFS

  • Reviews for iSCSI NFS e 3100 & Catalyst 2960-S vs?

I'll put up my first SAN, a 3100 e with 2 NICs by MS.  We chose a pile of Cisco 2960-S for redundancy at the network level, and during the planning phase, I had chosen to use NFS.  E does not deduplication with iSCSI support (someone?), and the performance is roughly equal to this environment.  It is 3 guests with approximately 15 production MV; I expect a usage rate of 20% per host based on statistics collected from the current production environment.

The glitch is 2960-S is limited to 6 ports-channels, even in a pile!  Initially, my plan was simple enough, and a commercial engineer.  Create channel-port on each host to storage traffic and traffic VM vMotion/HA.  Each of them would be 2 gigabit NIC in a VLAN dedicated.  But, now that I have that 6 Channel ports to work with, what is the best solution?  I would go with NFS, if possible, but I can't understand a good way to provide a high availability and balancing at the network level (yes I know that the effectiveness of IP hash is questionable in a port channel).

In the past, I have Setup iSCSI multipathing in environments of test with good results, but it is a little more complex that I want to get for such a small environment, and we lose deduplication.

Is back to the original question - possible to NFS, highly available, without aggregation of links?  I am referring to each element of the stack - host, network and SAN.  Is there another method would you recommend, and if so, why?

    A few thoughts I had:

Wouldn't be better to put the vMotion/HA NIC on access ports with 1 NIC in standby mode and use the port for NFS instead channels?  Once the environment is fully migrated, I expect vMotion will be made during failures and maintenance periods.

If I assigns an IP address to a store NFS SP A and it fails, MS B will remain passive until a failure and then take control of this IP/action?  Or the store NFS appears twice in my list of data stores?

    Thanks for your comments!

Here is my attempt at bad taking a picture to help visualize this

I had to redact the names and IP addresses

MGMT use vmnic1 as a primary vmnic5, as a backup. It is the VLAN 125

vMOTION uses vmnic5 as a primary vmnic1, as a backup. It is 126 VLAN.

vmnic1 and vmnic5 are shared resources at the level of the physical switch to allow the 125 & 126 VLAN.

  • Create two different user profiles in a laptop to use in office & home environment

can we create two different user profile / accounts, which can be used only one profile of field office environment & another profile for my internet browsing environment home (which has no restrictions). But my desktop environment uses an ISA Server which limits with many rules.

What I really want is, I want my two accounts work like two different PCs. mainly programs which I use on the family environment may not run or work or visible on the desktop environment profile...
can someone suggest me a solution or I would like to know if it's possible that...

Unfortunately put you you join a computer to the domain, that's all the computer not the user account and the domain policies will be applicable to all users.

Even if a running virtual machine could just do what you want, you would have probably more success with the creation of a separate partition and dual boot of the system. You would then have a home operating system and a separate office o/s. Dual boot can be with the same versions of Windows, they do not have to be different.

Well, we know nothing on your system--maybe it's because you are not prompted to provide useful information when you ask your question.

Sometimes browser redirects are attempts by malware to direct you to a page for a product, to deceive you into thinking that your system is infected and trying to get you to send them money, or sometimes the malware leaves you not get to web pages where you might find a method to get rid of him.

First of all, I would like to launch a few scans to make at least an attempt to eliminate obvious and easy to fix infections, malware, and then if you still have the problem, that would be the time to repair it.

Perform scans for malware, and then fix any problems:
