  Thank you very much lava. called today just ELL to confirm that reformatting (see first post) had gone ok and no problem. It's when I told him of the loss of thumbnails. He said it was because the windows media player had not read VLC codex. We downloaded a pack of softonic codex and now all the thumbnails are back.   I must confess not that I've been a user of default Firefox for some time. Have recently changed to a 64-bit (Windows 8) op system and the only 64-bit browser, I don't see in the Nightly version.

  Just to add to the response of cor - el, in my case (identical) was specifically the complement DivX HiQ, worm 2.1.0.900. As soon as I turned it off, the tabs started to behave normally again.
