  Thank you very much lava. called today just ELL to confirm that reformatting (see first post) had gone ok and no problem. It's when I told him of the loss of thumbnails. He said it was because the windows media player had not read VLC codex. We downloaded a pack of softonic codex and now all the thumbnails are back.
