  Here's how you can reset which appear in a new tab. If this setting does not stick, one of your modules could be replacing it.

That would leave more room for the bars of location and search on the same line. The second result would be my preference.

(I saw entries in for the old tinymenu addon, which is no longer, I installed. "I couldn't delete them.) I've disabled all my elegant addons, thinking that they might be interacting, but that did not help.

  Also, could you try Tab Mix Plus update to the current version and disable all other add-ons that affect the appearance of the area of bar tools/chrome of Firefox?
