How can I restore my backup files on an external hard drive using Windows XP SP3?

I back up my files to an external hard drive using windows XP sp2. My pc crashed and re installed with Windows XP sp3. Now I can't find the backup on the system tools utility. How can I restore my backup files. Help, please.

Hi PML.

Yes, I used the built in «Back to the top of the tool» Unfortunately I don't have the CD. My Netbook is a HP mini computer that comes with Windows XP home. Thank you for your help and I hope to hear from you again.

How do you reinstall Windows?  If you have used the HP Recovery system to recover from a hidden partition, backup should have been reinstalled.

I suggest you call HP support.

There is a way to do really well.  You can clone your XP disk as a file and then access it via Virtual PC.  See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx you can then use the XP Mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/windows-xp-mode.aspx) and load your old cloned drive (vhd file) as a secondary drive and then you can pull data off of it you want.  There is more info here on its use: www.oehelp.com/OEnWin7.aspx since you get Win7 Pro, XP Mode will be free.

Original title: not a wiz here pc... How can I copy video to a DVD on my hard drive... I have windows XP?
need help please... thank you in advance.

If the DVD is "not" a commercial copy protected DVD...
the following steps may be worth a try:

When you insert the DVD in your DVD player... close
all the windows that can open and then go to... Start /.
Computer... right click the icon for the DVD player
is located in, and then select Explore or open to view the
    Directory of the DVD.

The files you need from the DVD are the. VOB files.
You will find them in the VIDEO_TS folder. Copy them
in a folder on your hard drive. Or you can copy the
    full VIDEO_TS folder.

First... just try to rename one of the. VOB files to
. MPG or. AVI and see if it will matter in Movie Maker.
If import works... drag the file to the timeline and
Economy/publication it to .wmv or .avi format. Then...
Re - import new video from .wmv to for editing.
(Note: in Windows 7 you may be able to import the)
VOB files in Movie Maker just as they are)

(FWIW... you can probably play the files renamed
in Windows Media Player to be sure that VOB
    file to edit)

If you are unable to import the files they need to be converted

(the file you want to download is: > FFSetup260.zip<>
    (FWIW... installation..., you can uncheck
('all' boxes on the last screen)

First, you will need to decompress the file or just open the
Drag FFSetup260.exe out of the folder
and drop it on your desktop. To install left click.

Next, after the download and installation of Format
Factory... you can open the program and
left click on the toolbar, the "Option" button and
"Select an output folder to" / apply / OK.
(this is where you find your files after they)
    are converted)

Drag and drop your video clips on the main screen...

Select "all to WMV" / OK...

Click on... Beginning... in the toolbar...

    That should do it...

You can search for an external drive if the operating system permissions are OK.  Bridge, however, will not look on different drives.

  • How can I change the icon associated with an external hard drive that is displayed in my computer

When I double click the icon my computer on my Seagate external desktop hard drive does not display the correct icon. It displays a blank page with the upper right handed with a superimposed replica of a small screen.  I really want to show an icon that looks like the real thing as stated in the icons folder.

    Hi PhilipRoebuck,

    (1) do you get an error message when you try to open the external hard drive?
    (2) where there are changes to the computer before the question?
    (3) is confined to a specific icon?

    See the following:
    Method 1:
    Icons change incorrectly in Windows
Important Before run you this difficulty, save your data and close the application. After you run the difficulty, your computer will reboot after 10 minutes.

Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. • How can I change the icon associated with an external hard drive in XP?

I had to reformat etc and when settled dust that I can not put an icon on my external hard drive from seagate 1 t. It's not bad but it drives me crazy because it seems that it does not...

Using Notepad, create a file with the following content

    [autorun]
    ICON = localpath\iconfile

Save the file as autorun.inf (be sure to set "Save as type" in the drop-down list for "All Files" box).

    • IconFile is a file with the file extension ico icon.
    • LocalPath is the file (or folder and subfolder, etc.), without a drive designation.  So, for example, if there is a folder in the root of the named Seagate external drive, and you have an icon named seagate.ico file, the line in your autrorun.inf file would be:

    Icon = Seagate\seagate.ico

Note that the square brackets in the first line should be included
The autorun.inf file is usually a hidden, but making it so is yours.

  • How to transfer Time Machine backup to the new external hard drive

I'm upgrading to a 1 hard external to the Western reader to with 5 TB of Seagate.  This is because Time Machine has used the 1 TB drive.  How can I transfer the files from backup Time Machine from the old to the new drive so that backups continue to have access to the old files.

Although the documentation Apple says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it is very slow and sometimes does not.

This technique works only if the volume that you copy to the same size or larger that that you are copying to.

First of all, please open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may be able to unlock the settings first, by clicking on the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Log in as administrator.

Remove the volume you want to copy in the list of backup destinations. Then turn off Time Machine.

Launch disk utility, open the built-in Help and search for the term 'Double '. Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be deleted. That shouldn't be a problem, because you do not want to mix non-sauvegarde and backup data on the same drive anyway.

If the volume you are copying has been encrypted by Time Machine, you must first unlock it. Click the release button in the toolbar of the disk utility window.

Turn Time Machine back on and select the new volume as a backup destination. Alternatively, you can continue to use the old volume, if you wish. Both will be alternated when both are available.

ATTENTION: If you copy the volume is corrupted, as shown by the ERD or first aid in disk utility, while corruption is copied to the new drive. Do not copy data from a damaged on a faulty disk volume. Put aside the reader and do not use until you don't know that you no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and bring it to a recycling center. Do the same if the restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • How can I access files on my external hard drive with windows 7 OS, when I attach it to a computer with windows vista?

When I try to change the permissions, I get an error message: error security application. An error has occurred applying security infromation to root: root, \boot: \bootmgr, root: \System Volume Information access is denied.

When I open windows Explorer, it shows only startup records and not the user records. All suggestions will be useful. Thank you

    Hi, MBRC,

    1. Where are you trying to change the permissions?

I suggest that you first take ownership of the drive once you connect to the computer and check if it works.

To take ownership of a folder

    (a) right click on the folder you want to take control and then click Properties.

    (b) click on the Security tab, click Advanced, and then click the owner tab.

    (c) click on Edit. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    (d) click on the name of the person you want to give to the property.

    (e) If you want that person to be the owner of the files and subfolders in this folder, select the check box Replace owner subcontainers and objects .

    (f) click OK.

Troubleshoot "access denied" when opening files or folders

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/troubleshoot-access-denied-when-opening-files-or-folders

If the previous step fails, see if access you files and folders when you connect the drive to any other computer.

    I hope this helps!

  • Cannot get old backup files in the external hard drive

    Separated from this thread.

I'm having the same problem - I did a file with windows vista and then put backup.exe at level to windows 7 and now I can't see my files. Help!

Windows 7 can read files from Vista backup natively as they both use the same backup engine. However the files generated by the backup and restore are not .exe files

You must run backup and restore and then access the backup image to open it.
