  Create a character style, do not set anything else than the regular style (or Semi, etc if you want the same style as the paragraph and numbering to match). Simply do not choose an italic style.

  Go to your style of paragraph, bullets & numbering section. Right underneath the number field, there is a character drop-down Style. Choose your Style of newly created character.

  You can now change your paragraph in italic style, or to highlight certain words and change them in italics, but the numbering will not italicized.

  What about just describing the text? Select the text, if it is still wrapped and go to Type > vectorize

  There is no way to do it.  Contact your ISP and write them.  WinMail also has a bit of a bug and if you set the wrong values it will be you bug without end, then go to tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties and set them there and not when it prompts you.  Sometimes also the ISP service will work intermittently, and they generate the problem.  But the idea of "password" is so nobody else knows what it is, and so there is no way to determine what your password if you forget it.
