How do I know which 'services' system settings are essential?

Hello

I hope you can give me a definitive answer to help me.

I think I have unnecessary services running that may be slowing down my laptop. Where can I get a copy of the service setting when I got the computer? How will I know which services are essential and which are not (as an option)? Which must be set to automatic, manual or disabled?

I have Vista Home Premium SP2

Thank you

You should not tinker with the settings of the service. This introduces errors in the system and leads to a defective computer. You need to consider applications for loading at the beginning to see if they will be better replaced by a basic ' we demand. " It's the applications that run when not necessary that will slow a computer no services.

To identify what loads when you start using Autoruns (freeware from Microsoft).

http://www.Microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns, you can deselect an item which disables startup, or you can click with the right button on an item, then remove it. If you clear the check box that you can check back for re - activate the element. It is an approach much safer than editing the registry and better than using msconfig.

Another useful feature of the program is that you can click with the right button on an item and select search online to get information about the selected item.

    Original title: completely clueless

I'm totally clueless when it comes to computers, but I try very hard to learn. I am using the help section a LOT, but I can't seem to find an answer to the only thing that makes me crazy. How can you know what drivers and programs are essential and those that can be deleted without harming my computer? I have a very basic net accountant I learn on before I screw up a portable more expensive and I do a cleaning on my C and D drives to improve performance because it runs so slow but it tells me I have the drivers who slow down Windows. I would greatky appreciate any assistance from someone who has the patience of a saint and is willing to take the time to explain it to me, in terms laymans. Thanks in advance

Drivers: you should know what you bought (in your machine) and what * you * want out of it.  If you want stability and things work properly - let alone the drivers.  If you want more performance check (and other games) in the drivers of motherboard chipset and video network from the manufacturers Web site... For more stability stick with the OEM website (HP, Dell, Lenovo - the assembler of the whole machine) and slightly more performance/push the limits (even if they want to work too - so still some stability) - access to websites of its components manufacturer.

With regard to the programs: you can decide what you use and do not use.  If you are not sure, look it up (Google) or ask.

  • How do I know which Service Pack is on my computer?

I worked on my 3D program: Autodesk Maya & recently, he ceased to be able to make. After checking around a bit on the internet, one of the answers was to check my security settings. I contacted tech support for my security on the computer & they sent me an email telling me what to change.

(what follows is part of what has been said) NOTE: The WFP (Windows Filtering) platform is the new features of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and later and with Windows Server 2008. PAM architecture is used to verify network communication and as it uses special techniques of surveillance, Web browsers and protocol filtering sections are not available. Continue with the following procedure if you are not running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and versions later or Windows Server 2008:

Then I wanted to be sure that I didn't run the WVSP1 already.

  • How can I know which files fragmented, I can safely remove?

    original title: fragmentation of files

How can I know which files fragmented, I can safely remove? Some of my fragmented files are system files.

Fragmented files are not bad! At worst, need another millisecond or two for the system read this file.  If the file is rarely or never accessed, so there no performance impact at all.  When you delete files from your machine, fragmentation does not fall within the decision-making process. If you don't remove them if they are not fragmented, then you should not remove them, period.  If you mind really that a file is fragmented after you run a standard defragmentation, there are programs out there as freeware "Contig" that defragment almost anything.

But another way is to press on +R on the keyboard, and run the winver command
When you run it, it will appear a dialog box with your Version of Windows is displayed.

For a little more detail and modern way, hold and press "Pause/break" of the keyboard.  It will appear a box of more modern.  It's also funny that pressing +Break is the trick to show this :)

You can create a smart playlist which, for example, collecting files converted based on the date that they are added to the library. It depends on how you want to proceed. If you want to permanently convert, I have a script called ConvertFormat which range the originals after conversion. Alternatively, you can temporarily change your media to the converted files folder are stored in a folder of new media, then once the process is complete you may add these files to your WMP library, reset the media in iTunes folder and delete the new additions to iTunes library, thus separating the two libraries.

  • No other event in Photos? How will I know which photos belong to what album?

My question is simple as that. I would like to organize my photos in folder/album/designated events everything must be located.

Currently, it seems that I am unable to see what photos are belongs to what album when it is in mode "last import" or "photo".

When I download tons of pictures and that you want to organize them here and there and when it does not show which photo belongs to where I'm really confused if it's worth to do that in photos.

How can I know which photos belongs to which folder / album / event among tons of pics?

I hope that there is an answer!

Moments have replaced the events, and they are automatically created according to the date of capture and the location.  You can always find the moment that photo is with 'display in the Moment '.

You can create albums and smart albums and folders and more moments, but it is not possible to show what photo albums has been added to the.

That's why I mainly use keywords and smart albums. The keywords appear in the Info Panel, so I can see which picture belongs to smart albums.

I only use standard for albums albums that I want on my iPhone and the iPad, because the smart albums does not synchronize mobile and these devices that I created as copies of smart albums.

  • How do I know which control raised the event?

In my program, there are six buttons that do similar things, such as changing the value of a table according to which the button is clicked. I used an event structure to do this. However, rather than repeat my codes six times in six events (one for each click of a button), I would like a case of event that meets at one of the six program buttons. The question is, how do I know which button is clicked on the inside of the box (of the key can be either false or true, then the value of the play button won't help)?

Configure the node event property to return the ref of the object that triggered the event. The referee can be used to check if she even control using various methods (name, equal to a Ref etc.).

  • How do I know which programs to take off the windows Installer CleanUp list?

    Windows Installer Cleanup of

    * original title - how do I know which programs to take off the windows Installer CleanUp list? I don't want to uninstall or remove a program that I always use currently__ *.

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/290301 (MS Office only - replaced by the 'Fix It' utility)
(Note: the Windows CleanUp utility has been replaced by the "Fit It":http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/ )

    The Windows Installer Cleanup utility:
It was created to correct software installations that failed during the installation process and leaving a bunch of files (including a file name that ends with an extension .msi (= MicroSoft Installer .msi). For example an installation failed MS Office (note I said "failed").
    See: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA011185721033.aspx

Also if when you installed MS Office you decided at the time you had no need of Power Point and chose not to install it. You find out later you need to make a Power Point presentation, insert the Office CD and try installing PowerPoint and it causes an error.

The tool using Windows Installer Cleanup will remove damaged installation files (located in C:\Windows\Installer). You then install Office and Power Point, once more, as they are not more present in the list of programs in the Add/Remove Control Panel. But at least this time Office and Power Point will install without errors as the Windows Installer Cleanup utility did what it was designed to do.

The unfortunate side effect of the cleanup tool is when you select and delete software that works correctly you then will no longer be able to install this software because it is no longer in the Add/Remove Programs list.

Now as to why there is so many files in the C:\Windows\Installer:
You will find lots of them. MSI files belong to software such as Java, Microsoft .NET Framework software AV, Norton Ghost, file downloaded during a Windows Update session and so on. It would seem that some software will clean up after itself and deletions, this is the file that were in the folder C:\Windows\Installer. Windows Update failure will create and leave the folders and files behind every time that you try to install the update and so you could end up with a large number of files taking up disk space.

It could also be a lot of files (is most needed) orphans.
If you still have the original Windows Installer Cleanup utility, and then by using the msizap (msizap g!) command removes all cached Windows Installer data files that have been orphaned.

See other responses, you got and let me add the following. If you are short on disk space, it is likely that there are some files that you don't need and you can delete them. But this generally record only a small amount of disk space and doesn't really help the problem. The only real solution to buy a bigger hard drive. Fortunately, they are very cheap these days.

I bought a laptop with a windows xp pro, I have the serial number, but I don't have the installation disc. How can I know which version I need? SP3 has not worked... at the moment I am testing SP1

The serial number of the computer has nothing to do with the product key for Windows.

What happened when you tried to install Xp with sp3? If you do not have the original for the computer that you use to install Windows?

You can try to contact the manufacturer of the computer who may be able to provide the recovery disc. The disks are usually under $ 20.
