They had no problem talking to me and agreed to send me a replacement at a reasonable cost drive, and it seems they still distribute XP discs.   Yet once, looks like a disk i/o error. Here's what I would do if I were in your shoes:

  (1) fix the WD to another computer with a box USB or SATA / USB and format it. Delete completely all the partitions on the disk in this way. Know what drive letter is assigned to it, run "cmd" and type "format D:" (without the quotes and this example assumes he has been attributed to the D drive letter).
