I recommend to install Windows on if you've never done before and expect to get back to a fully functional computer before the end of the week is over. ;-)

The basics are simple:

Back up all important data you external to the computer in question.
Make sure you have all the serial numbers and installation support and product keys set - off the computer in question.
Make sure you know all the hardware on your system. Run and print the Belarc Advisor report to be sure. I recommend to download the latest drivers for each piece of hardware NOW and their storage on a reader of CD/DVD/USB external to the computer for later.
Change your CMOS/BIOS system to boot from the CD and start with the support of Windows XP (CD).
Follow the prompts, remove the existing divides and create new partition on which to install the operating system.
When installing the operating system, install the drivers for hardware devices.
When doing this, patch Windows XP OS by http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ (repeat until there is no critical update left - leave EVERYTHING the only option at the moment.)
When doing this, install your applications. Then update those.
