in vista, the defragmentation process works silently in the background

Unfortunately in vista it does not provide a GUI to show progress as it did in xp

to do this, you'll need 3rd party defrag programs

    There is no such thing as 'old' updates. They are there to protect against a vulnerability or provide updates of the o/s. withdrawal defeats the purpose of them being there.

    What could happen, you might get degraded parts, or on the other hand, you might have a server that works very well.  Some companys may not have the luxury to allow material to acclimate to the environment, but if you have that luxury this is good practice.
