  When the hard drive is plugged into the TC it indeed belongs to the TC. You must create a directory on the drive of your computer to be the owner of this particular directory.   In a Word, nothing. The TC must connect to a network by using a wired Ethernet cable connection. The only exception to this would be a Workbench where you already have a router Apple providing a wireless signal, in which case the TC can connect wireless to "extend" the network.

These files are NOT stored on my computer because they take so much space that I would like to keep the separate external disk.  It was my hope to keep a backup on my time capsule on a regular basis with my backup of the iMac.  I have time machine configured to backup from my mac, and then under options, I have seen the drive seagate showing as excluded.  I removed excluded readers and click Save. However I don't think during backup that he actually saved these files because the capsule still shows as have plenty of available disk space.  When I opened the options again shows seagate always excluded.

  so question is can I save the iMac and the external hard drive at the same time?

  If this is not the case, what is the work around for this thing saved?

  The Seagate disk should be in Mac Mac OS extended (journaled)format, also known as HFS +, if you want that Time Machine to back up your Mac.

  Do you know how the Seagate drive is formatted?  If it isn't... . Right click on on the icon of the Seagate drive which is mounted on the Mac desktop, and then click read the information. In the window that appears, look for the Format.

  If you use Time Machine, open the system preferences pane, click Options, and remove the external drive from the exclusion list. It is not possible for all formats of volume.

  I've been running Time Capsule on an external FireWire drive Yosemite 10.10.5 running on a MacPro to 2012. It will allow more to perform backups and disk utility fails to remove the disc. The suggestion is to backup the drive and then wipe and restore.   However, I am about to upgrade to El Capitan and certainly want the option to return to Yosemite if necessary.

  Yes, it clones if the drive is still ok.

  On a MacPro, you have plenty of space for a real drive... or you can buy a USB key and just to make the clone.

  However, my recommendation is to download and run Carbon Copy Cloner. You get free trial use 1 month anyway. Clone startup current Mac to a USB drive or internal hard drive. And make sure it is bootable... that makes it simple to restore a computer to your old operating system running. TM cannot produce a clone bootable... nor can utility that can clone a drive but not to create a boot disk drive.

  Just keep the current firewire drive as that is the TM backup... I really doubt that you will get no improvement it cloning.
