How to find and kill processes running on my mac

Sometimes, when I try to delete the item in the trash, I get the message: "the operation cannot be completed because the item"xxx.pdf"is in use."

How can I remove anyway?

You can use the activity monitor to view the list of running processes and try to kill one. Be careful with this, you can potentially kill important processes.

Use the monitor activity on your Mac - Apple Support

It will not tell you which process is using the file however.

Preview sometimes will not release a file after viewing. You can command-click the Preview icon on the dock and the attempt to kill him.
