How to find previous restore points in Vista?

I had Windows Vista Home Premium.  I then upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate... I would go back to the Home Basic edition, but when I go to restore points it only shows the restore points for these days.

There is a checkbox to display the old restore points but it goes back only a few days and I need to go back a few weeks...

Can someone help me to let me know how I can see the earlier restore points?

Thanks Libby999

    Hello

You cannot create a what's available previous Restore Point.

A Restore Point is created today for use in the future. not created today to be used in the past.

There are only a certain amount of hard disk space allocated to the restoration of the system; by default, 15%

You can increase it in order to help you in the future, but not now.

Thank you MS Answers, allowing the resolution of simple problems like frustrating and a lot of time as possible by asking only not for any information system when a new question is asked.

Provide information on your system, the better you can:

What is your system brand and model?

What is your Version of XP and the Service Pack?

Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc..

The question was preceded by a loss of power, aborted reboot or abnormal termination?  (this includes the plug pulling, buttons power, remove the battery, etc.)

The afflicted system has a working CD/DVD (internal or external) drive?

You have a true bootable XP installation CD (it is not the same as any recovery CD provided with your system)?

If the system works, what do you think might have changed since the last time it did not work properly?

Some tools Anti Virus 'protect' your system so that they will not allow a restore of the system work properly.
For example, if you use Norton/Symantec products, you will see a message like this:
Restoration incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored...
It is also a popular Symantec problem (well, I'll be polite and call an "undocumented feature"...), they wrote an article about it:
According to what you use for malware protection, you may need to disable the product temporarily, do the system restore and then turn the products light up again when the system restore is complete.
Sometimes you need start your system in Mode safe and so that your protection programs are not running, and then do the system restore.  Tips from Microsoft in some of their articles that if the system restore does not restore your computer, start in Safe Mode, and then run the system restore.  It works for some configurations.
System Restore is sometimes so afflicted or Restore Points are suspicious, the best solution is to reinstall your system restore.  This will remove the old Restore Points, but sometimes it's the only way to fix a broken system restore.  You don't have to reinstall XP, only the part of system restore.
That can leave you with your problem of unspecified origin that you hope the system restore will fix (using a system restore is usually not equivalent to fixing the problem though).
Give these ideas some consideration if they apply to you.
Sometimes malicious will afflict your system restore to prevent you to find and remove malware.  It would much rather you trick into thinking that you need to repair or reinstall your XP when it is not necessary.
No matter what you use for protection against malware, I do so and then only begin to solve any problems:

  • How to remove a specific restore point in Vista

I want to delete the restore individual (s) point. How can I do?

I know that I can delete all old restore points and keeping the last but, I want to remove unnecessary points in the middle in order to not consume the space allocated to the restore points.

    Thank you very much

    HD

I'm sorry but this is not possible. As you point out, you can remove all but the last restore Point, or you can remove all the and start over. It is important to remember that the restoration of the system is not a substitute for backup. A better solution for most people is to buy an external hard drive and a program like Acronis True Image imagery. TI can make images and incremental backups. Your healthy regular imaging system gives you the ability to restore to the State in a very few minutes, on the same hard disk or on another.

You can also reduce the amount of space used for the restoration of the system.

  • How to protect a restore point are overwritten?

I would like a solution would work her for all the versions of XP and 7. Maybe I could save a restore point to protect to be replaced.

When I solved the problem 'my computer takes too long to start', I need some real numbers to see the before and after...

Then I can charge $1 per second for every second that I take off your startup (up to a maximum of $100) time.  I need front and after hours to collect the loot.  There is of course no charge if your startup time increases.    They take generally only a few minutes of effort on some systems, and most of this time is waiting for reboot cycles.  It is a BIG scam, let me tell you.

I don't have to copy/paste of notes on what you want to do, but here's what I think...

RPs are stored in the System Volume Information folder that is hidden and inaccessible (for your protection, of course), unless make you it accessible.

    See this article:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/309531

I prefer the command CACLS (ACL = Access Control List), so on my system, to enter the folder IVR, start, run or I would like to a command prompt window, enter this command:

    Cacls "C:\System Volume Information" / e/p Jose: F

That should all be on one line with the quotes (since it contains spaces), press ENTER.

Now, Jose navigates carefully all the stuff in the SVI folder.

To restore it as it was before, enter the following command:

    Cacls "C:\System Volume Information" /E /R Jose

When you enter the SVI folder, there is another folder called:

_RESTORE (a few letters and numbers)

Under these are records of Nnpr where each of them is a Restore Point.  Sort Nnpr records by date, and you can see them and compare to the SRP appears available in the system restore calendar.

Manually create a new PR and watch what is happening in the SVI folder list when a new RP is created in order to see how it works.

Look into the new folder Nnpr and it's the Restore Point.  Some RPs may be traumatic, some might be small - it depends on what the RP's savings since the last PR was created.

Under each folder Nnpr is a snapshot folder that has the XP registry at the time the RP was made (it's good to know for any problem).

You can look around it there and you'll see things that might look familiar... and text files, you can watch...  I don't think I know what all the files are fine, but it may not be important for what you're trying to do.

I think that if get you things you like, turn off SR and enable it (that will remove all current/former SPP) and look in the SVI folder and you should have zero RPs.

Then manually create a new RP, you will have a new Restore Point in your calendar of SR and a new Nnpr under SVI folder for this moment.  I don't think that the departure of RP RP01 folder names, healrp02, etc...

I'm not sure all the other files there in the SVI to do, but if I wanted to do what you want to do, I'll start with no RPs, do a RP manually and then copy the entire folder IVR on a CD-ROM or other course (perhaps an external drive).

In the future when you are ready to go back, turn off the system restore and solve it (to erase all old PHI) and then replace the SVI folder on the hard drive with the one on the CD.

You may need to remove the SVI folder, but when you restart, a new is created automatically even if SR is disabled.  This SVI folder empty is more annoying for some people, but you can make it work as you want...  ($25 extra for costs of removal trouble).

To replace the SVI folder, you may need to work in Mode without failure or the XP Recovery Console, but you can replace the entire SVI folder if you want.

It may take a little effort to replace the SVI folder, but you can do it.

Then restart and choose to restore your computer to an earlier time.  I think there is just a single RP in the calendar and it's one that you copied from the CD.  I could be wrong on this part.

This concept could be complicated or messy or worse if you have SR followed two volumes (like your drive C and D), you'll have then two SVI files.

It is not supposed me have followed anyway SR things on any volume as the boot volume (usually C), so usually the turn off on the secondary volumes except in cases where I'm not sure at 100%, it is not necessary.

If you choose to restore to the RP only and it works that partially for some reason, you have a big mess and XP could not boot at all and it can be difficult/impossible to fix, or the system restore may not work and XP will just complain that your effort of system restore has nothing.

I have not tried so I'm not sure that it will work, but since you have the things you need to do a repair or reinstallation if you must... that can happen (a reinstall from scratch).  And you're probably pretty well at this party now.

CCleaner is a way to also delete the individual RPs (and other maintenance that people like tools), but if I had to do your thing, I'd do it the way I described with the CD - and it may not work well or at all and might take some practice.  Then you can write an article about it.

Download and install CCleaner here - you may like it:

    http://www.Piriform.com/CCleaner

I do not really charge anything for the fixing slow startup time...
