    Hi Chantal,

You can remove from the USB flash drive write protection using the following steps:

    a. open the Start menu, in the search bar typeregedit , then press Efriendship. The Registry Editor opens.

    b. navigate to the following location:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies

Note: If theStorageDevicePolicies registry key does not exist, you must create it manually.
    c. highlight the Strategies of storage devicesand then create a new DWORD called (32-bit) aswrite protect.

    d. Double click on the keyrecording in the right window and set the value to 0 inthe value data box , and then press the OK button.

    e. restart the computer and try formatting USB key.

  • How to format FAT32 Memory Stick that says that it is read only

I have a 8 GB USB key (directly from the provider) that I can't write or re-form.  Under sharing and permissions of the USB it says that my access is read-only.  If I try to delete it via disk utility I get an error message saying it didn't - I see by looking at the "details" that permission has been denied.

I tried to re - format the USB on a windows as well without success.

Suspect it may be defective and are returned to the vendor but I was wondering if anyone has something else to think about.

    Thanks in advance,

If you can not select the drive and delete and back in shape, then it is a bad drive. No new flash drive would come from a manufacturer as read only anyway. Even your mac must write in this format.

    Hi Alan,

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

It seems that you need help with the installation of an external hard drive.

Normally, when you connect an external hard drive, it will automatically detect and assigns a drive letter. If you have problems you can consult the following links for installation and formatting of a hard disk:

Install or remove a hard drive

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-in/Windows7/install-or-remove-a-hard-disk-drive

    Managing hard disks: recommended links

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-in/Windows7/managing-hard-disks-recommended-links

If the drive letter is not assigned, you can check out the link and check if it helps:

Change, add, or remove a drive letter

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-in/Windows7/change-add-or-remove-a-drive-letter

I hope this helps. If you have additional questions on the computer, please ask your question about Windows and we will be happy to help you.

  • How to make a USB stick into a bootable image

I did a complete reinstall of windows xp to sp3

I'm doing a usb key that will start a linux system

usb in question has been used before on a windows vista and windows 7 and starting machine

Why can I not make an usb device bootable on windows xp machine work?

The problem is probably not the key USB but the BIOS that is loaded onto your computer motherboard.  When Windows XP came out, USB was relatively new and had not reached the sophistication to address such opportunities that boot from USB.  Things have changed a bit since then and newer machines have no problem using USB as a bootable media.  Your only chance would probably be to see if there is an updated BIOS available for your machine.  You can check your manufacturer's Web site or the Web site of the manufacturer of your motherboard to see if one is available.  Do your homework and proceed with caution because an installation or an update of the BIOS failed can easily turn your computer into a boat anchor.

You can consider using a Linux boot CD instead of the USB key for this computer.

What I've experienced so far, it's that I can get in shape through the "disk management" from RAW to exFAT and displays the USB like "Healthy (Primary Partition)" and as "base type". However, when I try to format it in ntfs it fails... Any suggestions are welcome...

    Hi Mike,.

read this thread until your last post, I would say that I don't know if your problem is rooted in MS tools to make great readers USB and change facing he gives structure of the system, or is it a problem with the device itself.

Looking for another way, you can try to format your USB stick with a nonWindows such as 'Parted Magic' tool which is OpenSource software with many features for handling and disk management. You can download it here:

    http://PartedMagic.com/

If you have not already tried it and you succeed I would certainly say that your problem is definitley specific Windows

The problem here is: you must "ISO Recorder" or similar software to burn the Iso Image to CD. Subsequently, you can boot from this CD and start the program.

    It will be useful.

    Hello

I'm looking for a way to format a USB drive to play media on my television. This problem seems to occur when the upgrade to El Capitan. I could always format the USB to play large files of 5 to 15 GB and easily play through my smart TVs. I am able to always format the drive to the exFAT to enable the large file size, but my TV does not recognize the drive and therefore can't play.

Is anyone else having this problem or knows how to solve this problem? Thank you

  • is it possible to download windows 7 on a USB stick and install it on a computer wiped

is it possible to download windows 7 on a USB stick and install it on a computer wiped

Yes, but you must do what is necessary. ISO that you create on a USB bootable copy.

    Prepare the. ISO installation file.

See the instructions for burning. ISO in Windows 7 or later files:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/burn-a-CD-or-DVD-from-an-ISO-file

You can also use the Microsoft USB/DVD tool, which is recommended for users of Windows XP.

After getting the file .iso that you use it Microsoft .iso to USB/DVD tool to create a bootable DVD or USB (requires a blank DVD or USB flash to at least 4 GB key).

    For UEFI systems based

If your computer is UEFI, they are normally the systems that come pre-loaded with Windows 8 or later, you need prepare the ISO for such a configuration file or you will receive an error during installation. The USB key must be formatted in FAT32 and use the GPT partitioning scheme. To do this, you must use Rufus, a small tool that you can download for free.

    Rufus - credit: Pete bastard/Akeo

    After installing Rufus:

    • Launch it
    • Select the ISO Image
    • Point to the file ISO for Windows 10
    • Check create a disk bootable using
    • Select GPT partitioning to EUFI firmware as the Partition scheme
    • Choose FAT32 NOT NTFS as file system
    • Make sure that your USB in the device list
    • Click Start
    • Close when you are finished

    Begin the installation.

The following describes the standard way to start the installation, especially if you are in dual boot a 64-bit version of Windows 10 alongside a 32-bit version of Windows. Another way is to start from a version of runing Windows installation and select the partition where you want to install Windows 10. See below for instructions how.

For information about how to modify your BIOS options to boot from the DVD drive, see the following tutorial:
