The antivirus has worked very well and I was able to access the internet very well.   Looks like you may have a virus or other malware. Get your updated antivirus program and boot into Safe Mode. Note that some viruses can hide from your normal antivirus program, so you really need to scan in Safe Mode. To enter in Safe Mode when you turn on first, press F8 on every seconds until you get the menu, and then select Safe Mode. Then run a complete system scan.

  I saw the many threads on this topic; many recommend that you manually download updates, but none give instructions on how to download manually.

  If I try to download something from Microsoft Websites, I get an error saying that the I do not have a program that will open the download and does not suggest which will download programs or install updates.
