How to migrate a virtual machine from the server with DAS to another server

Hi guys,.

questions. 'More' essential Kit. VMotion is available

I have 2 physical servers, two of them have DAS (not SAN Central). SO I want to migrate a virtual machine on server A to server B. is it possible in this situation?

Or should I have versions of more expensive VMWare do?

Thank you
Dmitry

You can use clone. I would close first to the bottom of the virtual machine, but a VM slowed would be very nice clone. You can also use the VMware conveter. VMware converter can make a hot clone, including synchronization of last-minute changes, stop the source machine and put under tension the clone.

  • Transfer of virtual machines from a server ESXi 3.5 to new ESXi 4.1 server. What is the procedure.

    I read on how to transfer a virtual machine from one server to another using VMotion. Not 100% clear on the process again. What I see or read is when you do this since an ESXi 3.5 Server ESXi 4.1 server, I do not see any information on, if possible. In addition, I have not read if I need to convert or upgrade the virtual machine until I use it on the new server. So, my question is, are there any special instructions, conversion tools to convert a VM created 3.5 to use on the new Server 4.1? Is there a detailed procedure that I have not yet found or read best describes this process. Like I said up to now I'm not 100% clear on the procedure. Thank you.

    ESX 3.5 VMs can run without modification on a host ESXi 4.1 - VMotion between the two hosts, you will stiil need to ensure CPU compatibility between the hosts.

    Are you referring to the evolution of the virtual machines network portgroup of one to the other and in your case potentially issue on to another vSwitch? If so, take a look at this script: updateVMPortgroup.pl everything you do really makes a call to ReconfigVM_Task() and passing in a specification change and put to day the network in which you want to change

  • Manually migrate virtual machines from the host is not responding.

    I have a 3 host cluster.  One of the guests became unresponsive.  Continue to run all the virtual machines connected to the host is not responding and I can't RDP for them.  I am able to SSH to the host does not respond, but not connect via vCenter.

    Restart the services will cancel the virtual machines running?  If this isn't the case, then what is the command to restart the services?

    What is the best plan to manually migrate those virtual machines for the other two hosts?

    SSH, cd to \usr\sbin, then run "services.sh restart" (without the quotes). Which will restart management services, with no impact to your VM. Then you should be able to re - connect with Vcenter.

  • Start a virtual machine from the CD player on vSphere Client

    ESXi V4.1-

    I know how to get the virtual machine to connect to start for the host's cd drive.  But it seems I have to first of all power on the virtual machine, and then connect the client drive - and at this time, it will be too late.

    Report from the boot of 5 s after powering did not connect the CD from client to the virtual computer for 5 seconds pause - connection was grey until the virtual machine launched at startup.

    Is it possible for a start of the virtual machine from the CD of customer?

    When you see the white bar (after the virtual machine is started) press the key "ESC". This will bring you to a boot menu (which may not show the CD at the moment). At this time to connect the CD-ROM drive and then 'hot' starts the virtual machine by pressing CTRL-ALT-INS. Once the white bar is displayed, press the ESC key again. Now you should see the CD-ROM as boot device.

  • A virtual machine or the template with the same name is already registered. Server error: the specified key name or identifier already exists.

    Hi all

    I have a 5.5 esxi server just the a virtual machine running at the moment. I try to clone this as shown below:

    http://nchrissos.WordPress.com/2013/04/22/cloning-a-VM-without-vCenter-in-ESXi-5-1-free-edition/

    However, I get the error:

    A virtual machine or the template with the same name is already registered. Server error: the specified key name or identifier already exists.

    I have no vcenter (yet), and it's just the 1 vm. The virtual machine is turned off. I get this error regardless of the name, I said that when I choose "add to the inventory.

    All advice appreciated.

    Thank you

    Oh dear...
    you read bad advice on the internet and then you get also the stupid advice here.

    Ignore both!

    If you want to clone a virtual machine by copying - do it like this:

    Create new virtual machine with the wizard.
    Skip creating a disk for new customers.

    In Datastorebrowser copy the original vmdk to the new dir, which has been created by the wizard.
    Reopen the new VM and edit - assign the vmdk that you just copied.

    The procedure of the blog is not supposed to work.
    Sissine trick doesn't make sense either

  • How to move a virtual machine in the warehouses of data on ESXi 4.1.0

    All,

    I need to move a virtual machine from a data store to another on the same host.  I have two drive bays where each array disk is its data store on.  However, one of them has problems if I want to move two of the virtual machine to a data to another store.

    Is it possible through vsphere and if so, how?

    My host is a:

    Dell PowerEdge 2950

    vSphere Client Version 4.1.0

    VMware ESXi 4.1.0

    Hello

    1. turn off the virtual machine to be moved

    2. right click on the virtual machine, and then select Remove in the inventory (the fleeting VM on the data store)

    3. browse the data store, in the left pane, right-click on the folder of the virtual machine and select move to...

    4 browse the new data store, open the VM folder

    5. save the .vmx file

    6. start the virtual machine in the new location and make sure that it works.

    Tejas

    In your Virtual Center client in the left upper corner click the inventory button and choose 'Models and Virtual Machines' this will display your virtual machines as well as the underneather of models in the window of the host tree.  Right-click on the template and select deploy the virtual machine from this template and it will start the wizard.

  • Best way to migrate a virtual machine from local drive to Cluster?

    Hello

    For historical reasons, we set up a virtual machine in the local disk of the ESX host.  This host is not connected to the San, where there is one group of another 3 ESX host.

    We would like to remove this standalone ESX host and migrate the virtual computer to the Cluster.  Should what tools I use?  Can use us the converter to do?  If so, when we connect to the Infrastructure of VI, does connect to the version independent host ESX OR import this virtual machine to an ESX Hos in the cluster?

    Thank you

    Hello

    your ESX host is connected to your vCenter?

    If Yes just turn off the virtual machine right click in vSphere client and choose migrate. Select destination storage and ESX server and it will be migrated.

    If it's not I turn off the virtual machine and just copy the whole directory of the VM on the new ESX Server with scp on ssh.

  • 890124. how to move a virtual machine from one storage to another?

    Hello

    I decided to increase the RAM of a virtual machine and storage space in which stood the machine is less than 1 GB, it says that it is impossible to start the virtual machine. So I decided to move the virtual machine to secondary storage which had enough free space.

    How can I make vSphere Client aware of this change? How can I know what's happened? what I need is to boot the machine which is now moved to secondary storage. is this possible?

    THX

    After again moving data store, you must register this virtual machine to be visible in the list at left.

    1 browse the data store and open the corresponding VM folder

    2. Select the .vmx file and right-click.

    3. Select the option "Add to the inventory" and keep clicking Next until you have finished.

    4. now switch on the machine. He will ask a question that you copied or moved.

    5. Select I moved it.

    6. your machine is running.

    And you can see the virtual machine in the list after step 3 itself.

  • New virtual machine for the model with the specific name

    Hello

    I'm trying to add some model VM to VAPP using recomposeVApp (...). And it works well except that I can not change the name of the virtual machine while recomposing. It takes the name of the model. But how to add VMS to model with the specific name? I use the v1.0 API.

    This is my code:

    ReferenceType vmTemplateRef = new ReferenceType();
    vmTemplateRef.setName ("MyNewVM"); This name is ignored. The name of the model is taken!
    vmTemplateRef.setHref (vmRef.getHref ()); reference to the model

    CompositionItemParamType vmItem = new CompositionItemParamType();
    vmItem.setSource (vmTemplateRef);

    create the type params VAPP recompose.
    RecomposeVAppParamsType recomposeVAppParamsType = new RecomposeVAppParamsType();
    recomposeVAppParamsType.setName (vAppRef.getName ()); The name of vApp. It is ok.

    added the element of the virtual machine.
    The newItems < CompositionItemParamType > recomposeVAppParamsType = list
    . getItem().
    newItems.add (vmItem);

    Task task = vapp.recomposeVapp (recomposeVAppParamsType);

    Thank you

    Hello

    For after this code fragment:

    vmTemplateRef.setName ("MyNewVM"); This name is ignored. The name of the model is taken!

    The model name is ignored because vmTemplateRef is the only reference to the object that will be used for the operation of recomposition. If changing the name it will be always ignored.

    I think that changing the name of the virtual machine template for recompose cannot be done as follows:

    (1) operation recomposeVApp().

    (2) get the recomposed VAPP

    (3) download the children-> VM you want to change.

    (4) change the name of the virtual computer.

    I hope this helps!

  • Trying to copy a virtual machine from one server to another

    Hi all

    I'm new to ESXi 4, although I used VMWare Workstation for years.  I am trying to copy a virtual machine from a Windows system (Sysprep) from one host to another.  The two hosts are identical systems with the exact same ESXi host configuration.  Same hw, same version of ESXi, same setup, same size of the partition.

    When I use the Vsphere data store browse to 'download' the vmdk and vmx files to a local drive (Windows Server 2003), I get the following 3 files: the same vmx file, a tiny vmdk file and a file huge filename - flat hard.  The file vmdk on browser to store data from the source host is about 23 GB.  The flat on the local system vmdk file is almost 63 GB.

    Can I reopen Vsphere on the destination server and "load" the 3 files in a directory that I created in the data store.  Once there, I use the browser "Add to inventory."  When I try to turn on the virtual machine, I get the error message "not enough space on the data store."

    Any ideas of what I could have done wrong?  Again the data store configuration is identical:

    Local disk to VMware: 62.95 GB, Total formatted capacity: 62,75 GB.  1 VMFS 3.33 MB block size it's the only VM on the system.

    Thanks in advance,

    Mark

    What you see is by design.

    When you try to copy a disc loaded end service, with the browser data store or FastSCP, the virtual disk will be inflated. Use the converter such as recommended by AlbertWT.

    Since the virtual disks of destination must already 60 GB of disk space you may not able to power on the virtual machine, because there is not enough disk space for the swap file, which is the size of the configured RAM (less reserve, if necessary).
