How to open a new tab that does not replace a tab open?

When this site talks about a method of 'open a new tab' and I use it, what I get is a new tab which is superimposed on (replace) a tab already open. It is not my goal. I would like to be able to open a new adjacent tab, which I can do by clicking on the + sign at the end of all open tabs. I want a shortcut for this.

You can open a new empty tab with the Ctrl + T shortcut key.
