How to reinstall Mac OS 10.5.8 on my PGG4 without DVD

My 10 year old and 2 month old PowerBook G4 (12 ") is a dream machine!  I'm going to retire it soon but my wife and I use it for lots of emails and others.  Until about a month when the screen went crazy - menus turning green and opaque...  BUT now, I started in safe mode (hold down the SHIFT key) and everything is perfect - as I'm back in February 2005 and it is clear and the new...

So this must be a corrupted software problem or something, I tell myself.  So - with the original long gone, disks how can I clean this 100 GB HD and reinstall 10.5.8 Leopard (which I believe is the latest version of Mac OS that will run on the PBG4?

Can I download 10.5.8 as a dmg and then put on a USB2 external drive and I installed this drive Mountain Lion?

Not sure it will work...  I may be able to do via FireWire 400 if it will work.  But where to get a copy of the Mountain Lion (my original CD is lost or in a box in Europe...)

Thanks for your comments!

Mountain Lion is 10.8.x, does not work on a G4 or any Mac of PPC.

No legal way to download 10.5 Leopard install disk/DMG/ISO, sorry.

Target disk mode FireWire can work to use another optical drive to Mac to install if necessary.

Leopard requirements/10.5.x...

* Mac equipped with a processor PowerPC G5 or PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) processor

Minimum system requirements

* 512 MB of memory (I say 1.5 GB for PPC at least 2 or 3 GB minimum for IntelMacs)

* DVD player for installation

* 9 GB of available disk space (at least, I say 30 GB)

Classic/OS 9 Apps is no longer supported.

Problem, is that apple sells more of it, check eBay and such for the version at retail, not the gray discs...

There are solutions if the 867 MHz CPU is the only hang up...

  • When I installed 10 windows on my mac, I accidentally deleted the MacOS Partition. I made a new D: drive partition in Windows 10, but when I go to the restoration of the internet and try reinstalling Mac, it says that the disk is locked. How to unlock thi

So basically, I downloaded the ISO of Windows 10 file and installed using boot camp. During installation, I accidentally formatted the Mac OS partition and replaced with the windows one. Now, I'm trying to reinstall Mac OS using the internet retrieval feature. I partitioned a new D: drive named OSX, and there is no data on the disk. I then click on reinstall Mac OS. I try to select the disc of OSX I partitioned, but it says that the disk is locked. Anyone know how to unlock the drive or should I do something else?

    Thank you very much

    CJ

I think one of the problems might be that my Windows partition has replaced the C: drive where was the OSX partition. I tried to move the Windows operating system on a drive b or e :), but it won't let me. Let me know if this could be a problem too.

    Hello there, murat119.

Looks like you're wanting to reformat the hard drive on your MacBook. The following Knowledge Base article offers up different options available for you:

How to reinstall OS X on your Mac

Wipe your drive and install OS X

Generally, you don't need to erase your startup disk to reinstall OS X. The OS X Installer is designed to allow you to perform an installation in place during the same version or earlier versions of Mac OS X. If you transfer your Mac to a new owner, you can clear your integrated boot disk before you reinstall OS X.

Important: Before you remove and reinstall, back up your important files. If you are using a MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, make sure that the power adapter is connected and plugged all by performing the following steps.

You can use these measures to erase files on your startup drive and install a fresh copy of OS X:

    1. Before you begin, make sure that your Mac is connected to the Internet.
    2. Restart your Mac. Immediately hold down the command (⌘) keys and R after having heard the startup sound to boot into OS X Recovery.
    3. When the recovery window, select disk utility, then click on continue.
    4. Select the volume name back from your startup disk in the left side of the disk utility window, then click Delete.
    5. If you want to erase the disc safely, click Security Options. Select an erasing method, and then click OK.
    6. On the Format menu, choose Mac OS extended (journaled). Type a name for your drive, and then click clear.
    7. After that the drive is deleted, close the disk utility window.
    8. If you are not connected to the Internet, select a network in the Wi-Fi menu.
    9. Select the option to reinstall OS X.
    10. Click on continue and follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall OS X.

    Additional options

If you want to reinstall the version of Mac OS X included with your Mac, or if you have to reformat your entire startup disk, press Command + Option + R to start instead. This starts your Mac recovery of the Internet.

If you have more than one partition (like Boot Camp) and you want to delete the complete startup disk, you can use disk utility to remove the partitions or re-partition your hard drive. Start up your Mac in recovering from Internet, then use utility to repartition your boot disk drive until delete you it. Make sure that you back up important data from all partitions before repartitioning of a disc.

    See you soon.

    Hello

Before I tried to reinstall Mac OS X Yosemite I erased my Macintosh HD first, but I got an error that I don't remember, after that it's what shows when I click my disk utility on Macintosh HD.

Then I went to pick up my laptop so I can use it again using the option reinstall, downloading files, then I got stuck without being able to choose a hard drive (only the HDthat recovery is only 650 MB is available but locked) now I'm a little stuck and cant recovery my PC only blocked this shown screen image.

I tried to do a technical service, but his strong where I live. Is there a way to get around this? Thanks for any help!

Your have one messed CoreStorage volume.

Reboot in Recovery Mode or whatever you used to access the external OS X Utilities menu and launch the Terminal from the utilities to the menu bar selection.

Cs diskutil list type and you should see something like the following.

The 2 paragraphs will erase everything on your drive. Make sure that you have a current upward.

Then, you must remove the UUID of the logical Volume that you should see at the bottom of the list. In my example the UUID is E77E0EAF - 32CB - 4378 - 8 C 48-530A4F87D77C. Type: diskutil cs deleteVolume (UUID)

Now find the UUID of Group of Logical Volume that you will see at the top of the list. In my example the UUID is CB76692D-D622-4A79-B2B0-409CD2675A91. Category: diskutil cs remove (UUID)

The above two commands will remove your volume of CoreStorage and erasing everything that he. Now you should be able to use disk utility to create your Macintosh HD and format it in Mac OS extended (journaled) with the plan of partition GUID and reinstall Yosemite.

If you see only the logical volume group that's ok. Simply remove instructions above.

After Exchange of HARD drive, you need this you to install Windows 7 disc. The Toshiba Recovery disk contains an image of the factory settings, which means that you will have the factory settings on the new HARD drive after the use of the disc. You must boot from it and follow the instructions on the screen.

  • How to reinstall windows XP?

    Hello

I need to reinstall windows XP Pro on my laptop A60.

I have no idea what to do, I watched the recovery disc and although a complete reinstall is simple, I really want to lose my information that I built.

I saw Drweekx post and Sylvain's response, but I don't know what are the particions or how to reinstall via the expert mode.

Is there someone to talk me through it?

    Thank you in advance

    XX Juddlin

    Hi again

Juddlin I can find you a few subjects. I really put t know where I can write to you. ;) Please stay on this one.

If you want to install OS using expert mode control his topic http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2513

At number 7 it of description Put again inside the new size of the partition, and then press ENTER. There you can put 50% of the maximum size of HARD drive. After this HARD drive will be split on both sides. The first (C) will be used for the operating system and all the software you need. The other (D), you can use to store all your sensitive data.

If you sometimes in the future had to reinstall OS again use Expert mode and reinstall the operating system on the first partition. All the data you have on the second partition, you can use again.
