I think I should replace the hard drive with the "right" and then use my recovery disks. He said that windows 8 was just too big of an OS for the hard drive, it took, that is why it is slow. But couldn't I erase or reformat the hard disk, and then use my recovery disks. As it is, I have no HP software on the computer more.  Is there a way to get the data from my old hard drive? I'm willing to take the time to learn how to do all this by myself if I knew that this is possible and if it is useful? [edited font color and characters]

  I understand that you fell on some hard drive problems and a friend of a friend installed a former player for you and since he turned slowly and noisily. Personally, I recommend that you buy a new hard drive and then review and follow the instructions on the HP Support document: performing a recovery of HP (Windows 7) system, which will guide you through the recovery process and get your computer back operational.

  If you don't have the recovery discs for your computer you can buy them for a cheap price of HP Media software and the drivercommand.

  I use Lr 5.7 on Win7 64-bit. I would remove completely some old files and their contents that were part of my previous, very messy organization. I still have parents and masters images files, so I have no need extra junk on my hard drive.

  I tried to do a right click on the file, but the only option is to delete the catalog. I saw posted solutions that say click on icon less. I don't see an icon less anywhere. As far as I know, Lightroom really doesn't want "delete me" anything.

  If you connect the external HARD drive to the laptop, then it will appear in my computer.
  There it is necessary to mark the new recognized external HARD drive, right click and choose format.

  A good starting point is the Information System (Option while clicking the Menu Apple key). At the hardware level, click on Express SATA/SATA and look for the SMART State in the bottom right pane for each HD listed in the upper pane right. Unless the State is OK, looks like not verified. If the drive is totally dead, search for a missing list for a drive Bay, you know is filled.
