  I recently updated my Surface Pro and I noticed that during the update, there is a Windows.Old folder that contain data from before the update. However, when I tried to remove this folder as the update seems to be normal, I am unable to remove 6 boring. DAT files that remain. The. DAT are associated with an app called Kno manual and some are associated with Studyblue.com that allows me to generate and store the flashcards online.

  Well, after a lot of research I thought it

  Forget the noise on the Unlocker download, FIleAssasin, ETC..

  Best way to do this is through the command prompt.

  Open cmd prompt, type:

  DEL/p/f/s/a "C:\Windows.old\*".

  And viola, it has deleted the. DAT files and I was able to manually delete the Window.old folder.

  There are a few threads on the permanent deletion of data, but believe it or not, they are a little too technical for me!
  What I have done so far is to reinstall windows vista which, I believe, formats the hard drive and then I deleted the windows.old file using disk cleanup function.
  All data sensitive etc. will be still recoverable? My apologies if this repeats another thread and I would be very grateful if someone could help it.

  Thanks for the tips. I'll do the following:

  1. create a CD or disk bootableDBAN
  2 wipe the disc C
  3 reinstall windows vista

  And this should provide sufficient protection to the new owner, trying to find the old files. If you think that I have to consider anything else please let me know if possible.

  It depends on what they are and where they are.  The CAB files are usually left overs from the installation of things like updates.  You can run the Disk Cleanup Wizard (which is fairly careful about what he deletes) should remove them safely.  Make sure you check "clean up system files" when you run it

  BTW it is a free 3rd party app called Treesize (by Jam software) gives you much more information on the "unknown" and more detail in the larger files, etc.  Looks like this
