How to run older games on Windows 7?

Original title: Application Incompatible

I am trying to install a game made for Windows 95/98, it is obviously incompatible with Windows 7, I have the Home Premium Edition. Is it possible to make it compatible?

Thank you very much for the help.

Hi Eilram,

You can try to install the game in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

To install the game in compatibility mode

1. right click on the Setup file, and then select Properties.

2. click on the compatibility tab.

3. under compatibility mode, check the run this program in compatibility mode for: option.

4. Select Windows 95/98 from the available options.

5. click on apply and OK.

See make older programs run in this version of Windows

What is program compatibility?

Note: Some old programs may run poorly or does not work.

If installing the game in compatibility does not help, you may need to contact the software vendor for assistance.

Hope this information helps.

I can't even my game (Diablo II) to run, unless I put in the properties to run as administrater.  Even with Vista.

You set the mode in the game options. Each game is different, but usually go to options-> video-> run in windowed mode is generally acceptable way to find. Also, the current older games to run in administrator mode is not something new. Who should almost for older games to install or run correctly.

Some games do not have this option, some are not at stake, some you have to do by using a shortcut with parameter - window like: C:\Program files\blizzard\diablo\diablo.exe-fenetre or something.

  • Problems with older games on Windows 7

I have an older game that was made for 95/98, and it worked on my xp computer still. But it doesn't work on my computer 7. I've installed several times, even tried the program in the programs of control panel controls made for earlier versions of windows, but it does not work with either. It displays this error message indicating Incorrect path in an INI file. Do you have any suggestions for me? This disc is also in good condition. I don't see why it shouldn't work.

Win 95/98 games is getting a little old for Win7. If you are using 32 bit Win7 your chances are better with 64abit, but if there is no miracle on fan sites then you will probably need BOX BACK.
I have not really used these myself. Did not have much interest in return that far into my story.

  • I'm trying to run a game in windows 95 compatibility mode, but the compatibility under Properties tab disappeared.

I am running windows 7 Professional. It is not the version of upgrade.

    Hi Tippo_89,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site!

    (1) have you been able to use the compatibility feature earlier?

Try the steps below and see if you can run the program.

To run the troubleshooting program compatibility Troubleshooter

    (1) open the resolution of the problems of compatibility of programs by clicking the Start button, then Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooting, and then click Troubleshooting. Under programs, click on run programs for previous versions of Windows.

    (2) follow the instructions contained in the resolution of the problems.

If you are unable to install a program, insert the installation disc for the program and, using the Troubleshoot utility, navigate to the program setup file, usually called Setup.exe, Install.exe, or something similar. This utility is not designed to work on programs that have an .msi file name extension.

Access the link below for more information on the steps below.

  • problems with older games using windows

Why is it that whenever I have try and install a game that requires win95-for win 2000 it does not everything with my windows vista it also I cannot download from disc info for my printer and it's the same question is what can I do to solve this problem

What games are you trying to install?  It is a good chance that it uses a 16-bit installation program that will ask you to find the setup.exe and run it as administrator to install correctly.  I have a simple philosophy: just assume everyone is a piece of c.r.a.p. and then be pleasantly surprised if you find someone who is not.

As long as you are trying to run a 16-bit program on 64-bit Windows, then try either Windows key + R or click Start (or press the Windows key), and then simply type (or paste it into your order for the text box search programs and files ), then press on .

If you think you really need to run window, you can add it by customizing the Start Menu. Right-click the Start button, and then select Properties. Click the Customize button at the top right.

  • How to play VCD games in Windows 8

I have an old games VCD that has close to 300 games. I am able to play the same thing with my TV DVD player and joystick. I tried to open the same system, but the CD does not open. It contains files with extension .vcd, .bin, and. dat. Can someone let me know how to open the CD in my system.

Your game disc is designed for your DVD player

To run something in another system completely different, you need an emulator to emulate the other system
I couldn't find any emulator that would make VCD games works on PC and I wouldn't help you about this either because I don't think it's really legal to play one designed for one system to another system
I guess they are NES games I had a game once VCD disc full of NES games, I don't think they are even allowed
