How to transfer files and settings from an old XP to an a Vista machine.

I just bought a new computer that is pre installed with Vista from HP.  Can someone tell me how I can transfer some of my old files and settings from my old computer, which works on XP to my new?

Thank you.

Hello

An inexpensive way is to use a crossover network cable.

It is a description however computer stores will sell them at low cost.

If this isn't a lot of files, you could their zip and send them by e-mail.

Online record sites could function as your SkyDrive.

25 GB Windows Live SkyDrive

And you could set up a network if you really need as much connectivity.

I hope this helps.

Microsoft Office and other applications will need to be reinstalled from their original installation disk or install files. Make sure you have your product key for your applications.

In what concerns your personal files and settings, you can save them using Windows Easy Transfer and restore them on your new computer, you can have an external hard drive for this task.

I highly recommend using Windows Easy Transfer, as it stores a lot of what you miss by a manual copy and paste. For example, dictionaries customized in Microsoft Word and bookmarks and other custom settings for third-party applications that are stored in the folder (hidden) of AppSettings.

  • Could someone tell me the best way to transfer files and settings from an old computer to a newer version?

Hello everyone, once again I find myself going to the pro to know what you're probably going to think is an easy thing to do, but I have to swallow my pride and ask anyway. Before I ask my question, I need to let you know that I'm almost completely computer illiterate. I can manage to do somethings, but I have a feeling this is going to be difficult. I have an older Dell model, this is the Dimension 2350 series and I would like to transfer those things on that is also a Dell, but it's an Intel Pentium 4. . Really, I don't have as long as it's what files to transfer, but especially picutres of family or your holiday. What worries me is transfer the settings on my old computer to the newest one. I have a Windows XP CD drive that comes with a new computer. What help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!  Can you give me an idea what I have to do first with the old as in the steps I have to take.

    Question for you:

What is the operating system on both systems?  They are both Windows XP?  Is the older Windows XP and the newer Windows Vista?  Windows 7?  Something else?

I ask only because whatever you mentioned was a Windows XP CD that is supplied with the newest computer.  The truth - the newest computer is already up and working as you want - if not relevant.  The answer to the foregoing will help someone lead you correctly.

I'm sorry, but this is not possible.  FAST is available only when Windows XP is actually running on the hard drive. Boulder computer Maven

  • Transfer files and settings from PC to win8.1 PC win7

My win7 PC play, so I'm looking to buy a new one. Unfortunately they all win8.1.

There are many threads and messages on the complicated transfer data became, but they are confused and with the help of MS sites do not seem to cover this.

Essentially, I would like to know how to transfer data and settings from my PC to a new PC win8.1 win7?

I used easy transfer from XP to win7, but I understand that this is not possible with win7 for win8.1.

I do not use the cloud.

I have an external HARD drive that I use for backup in win7.

Is this just a case of copy and paste my drives C and D together to the new computer?

I'll be able to transfer settings and programs?

    Thank you.

Yes, it works with Windows 7.

  • Restore files and settings from my old Windows XP system to the newly installed Windows XP SP2.

My old Windows XP no longer works correctly - it would start to Windows, but that restart. Otherwise, all data and system files on the hard disk are completely legible [no error reported by various scans].

I made a copy of that old hard drive [with the problematic Windows XP] on a partition of my drive hard [second] another [using EASEUS Partition Master to copy the whole thing - it created an image of all the old hard disk on a special partition of the second hard disk].

That I took a third hard drive and installed a new Windows XP [SP2] on it. How can I transfer my files and settings from this partition of the second hard disk [which is the image of the original hard drive] third hard disk [which I now use as the bootable hard disk instead of the original one]?

Can I use "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" for whom? If so, how?

    AVI,
I think it's a little late for the transfer Assistant.  You should use it while the other drive has been started.  But you can try the wizard.
Run it and tell him that you are on the new PC.
So say no to create a wizard disk.
Then on the location of the files screen, select other and see if it will let you access the info on your another drive.
In my view, it will look for the file in the wizard, but it is worth it.

If this does not work then you need to just reinstall your programs and manually copy the data to your new drive. Typing of my new Windows 7 64 bit and love it! Soli Deo Gloria!

How can I transfer my files, data, & programs from old pc to new pc windows 7?

You can use the program built into Windows easy transfer of files. You can transfer the network drive or USB transfer cable.

However, your programs will be transferred not on, only your files and settings. Your programs will need to be reinstalled by using the installation media (CD, etc.).
Some programs can be transferred using the paid version of PCMover, a program designed for migration to new platforms.

Until you do, make sure that your existing computer can actually support Windows 7.  If it's an old computer, it cannot.  You can get a rough idea by running the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

If you have a computer of 'brand', go to the website of its manufacturer and check if Windows 7 drivers are available for your model.  Although Windows 7 has a large number of drivers built in, you may well need to install specific manufacturers drivers once Windows 7 installed, especially if you have a laptop.

When transferring files and settings from my current MBP to a new MBP, this also automatically will install all the applications installed on my MBP on my MBP again?  Also, I run Parallels and Windows on my current Mac and I was wondering if I could transfer these licenses on my new Mac, or do I pay for the new licenses?

If yo select this option to copy all the information on the new Mac applications is also copied. You may need to bury your license number for Parallels.
