How VM to saturate 1 gb ISCSI?

Hi all

I know that this question will be many types of scenarios 'depends', but I'm just trying to get an order of magnitude of whats realistic.

Lets assume I have especially low used virtual machine.  Web servers, DC etc.  None of the database servers or storage real high intensive VM.

About how vm, you might have running on this link before the saturated and causes of performance issues on the server?  In addition, the SAN will not be a bottleneck in this issue.

10VM by 1 gb link?

Again, I know there are a lot of "depends", but just try to get an idea.

Thank you

Thanks for the reply... So perhaps a better question.  How can I know what is the percentage which bind is used?

Just look at the rates of transmission/recieve on the NETWORK map?

Exactly

If I did my math, a 1 GB link right * could * push around 125 MB per second, or Kbps 125000?

From a physical point of view, Yes.  Remember ethernet/TCP/IP overhead.  Throughput is more like 112 MB/s

So if my vmnic use shows the use of 90 000 kbit/s, I can say that the almost completely saturated link?

Well Yes. Tells me that you have not "slightly" used VMs.

Thanks again,

Ian

findiSCSIDevice action () returns the string iSCSI device, and not as an object.

You can duplicate this action (say under a name findiSCSIName) and change its script code by replacing the following line:

    with

    return busAdapter.iScsiName;

    People,

I'm testing below the solution with provided hardware / software Details and I don't get maximum output according to what I'm supposed to get.

I tried everything and read all the manuals and the recommendation that offers VMware but still no lock...

Multipathing helped and I was able to acquire 150 MB for all, but a single virtual machine acquires a fraction of it. I tried up to 4 paths, and there was no additional benefit beyond 2!

Any suggestions would be very boiled so highly appreciated.

    Hello

Get a throughput with iperf does not mean that your network is not a bottleneck.

For example, flow control can have a huge improvement on throughput of SAN, without touching all-time iperf.

There is not much to go wrong with VMkernel that slow iSCSI, unless you go to paths multiple questions.

Specific parameters of Multipathing can have a significant impact on the flow - I would like to ask what a summer your recommended ATAS and PSP and if RR IOPS are relevant, but which amounts to determine if your San is actually a taken SAN supported.

  • How to change the name of a volume iSCSI target?

How the name of a volume iSCSI target can be changed?  I created a volume with a typo in a letter.   The volume production data on it now so I can not just it delete and recreate the problem.   It's not a big deal, but it doesn't look good either.

It's on a PS6100.   When I go into the properties of the Volume in the advance tab I can see the iSCSI name, but cannot change it.  All I change is the public alias.  But it does no good that the name appears in the vCenter with the misspelled name.

So how can I change the iSCSI name?

Or am I stuck creating a new volume and telling them to migrate their data for spelling can be fixed?

    See you soon

Part of the iSCSI specification is that target names must be unique.  Therefore, once created, you cannot change the name of the volume.

You will need to validate whether you site for a config where vmotion and iscsi share the same vmnic.

MY idea is to set up a single vDS with 2 vmk for iscsi connections, 1 with vmnic2 active and vmnic3 not used, the other vmk would be configured inversely with active vmnic3 and vmnic2 as unused.

Now now for vmotion I would create a configuration multi-NIC where vmnic2 is active and vmnic 3 is not used and once again the 2nd vmk vmotion would be configured conversely where vmnic3 is active and vmnic2 is not used.

VMotion networks would be configured w lower priority than iscsi networks to allow storage traffic

    Concerns:

in iscsi multi pathing others vmnic in the vDS other than the active vmnic must be unused when the use binding, it is also the case for several microphones vmotion or is having other vmnic in the ok mode standby?  Which is the preferred method?

the above configuration is officially suppotted?

Unlike iSCSI use cases for Multi-NIC vMotion inactive NICS must be configured as standby and not as unused.

See VMware KB: Multiple-NIC in vSphere vMotion 5

the above configuration is officially suppotted?

    Yes.

site slow performance of iscsi network will somehow?

It obviously depends on how to actually configure NIOC and how the consumption of bandwidth real iSCSI and available bandwidth. Usually you would not define the limits of the NIOC on iSCSI traffic bandwidth and assign a higher priority as well.

You can also consider to use the traffic on the port vMotion group shaping, see the following articles:

Hi all! Very new user here...

I started having a few storage errors when implementing new virtual machines, so it's time to add on. I have a few Sataboys Nexsan around my laboratory and easily hung them in the past. I created a vswitch just for iSCSI:

Then, I went to the adapters initiator software and storage enabled, the value of the vswitch3 (vmk1) network, dynamically discovered my storage and then the name of the target appeared in the static method. I then reread and nothing shows up under devices.

@Rikard, similar like that. How ESX knows that Lun0 will extent1 and Lun1 goes to extend2 in this store a data?

Wouldn't there is possibility that ESX detects Lun1 first than Lun0 and thus risk recognizing as extent1?

I guess it's a bit 'Internal ESXi', but it should be the NAA or T10 number reported by the SAN and no id LUN itself using ESXi to recognize discs. Given that these numbers never change, there is risk of errors between reboots. I have a vague memory of which is a kind of question on the 3.x versions, but do not these days.

    Hello
I'm looking to start a single ProLiant BL460c G7 of our HDS iSCSI SAN and then install ESXi 5. The blade has no local storage. The SAN is already in use by the cluster of our production.  In the iSCSI SAN config guide it States to set up storage so your host has access LUNS. How can you do this if your host is not installed? How can I configure the LUN to only be accesed by my hosts IQN name when I don't have an IQN name yet? What I must first install ESXi? I'm obviously missing something any help would be great!

This is true, for this, but as your correctly point out if the OS is not installed how do you have a software iSCSI initiator - boot from an iSCSI SAN is supported only if you have an initiator of independent hardware installed in your ESXi host.

  • Adding another target iscsi

    Hello

One of our hosts running 3.01, currently on an iSCSi SAN Netapp. We have deployed just a Compellent SAN, how do I add a new ISCSi target? In the dynamic discovery tab of the initiator, I added the server (and port 3260), but also add known as iqn on the general tab? The reason why I ask this before I try it is I don't ' want to lose the connection in progress, and I'm afraid to hit set up under the general tab and entering the new iqn name could remove it.

    Thanks in advance,

After the target storage has been added via Discovery dynamic all LUNS presented to the esx host must be visible in the sight of devices for the software iscsi adapter. He will go through the process of a new analysis of the storage adapter to recognize the new storage and should not cause problems with the currently connected storage.

  • Requirement of startup SAN

    Hello community members!

    It's my first article (question).

    Very grateful for any help.

I intend to install about 10 ESXi hosts with the boot from SAN (EMC storage).

Honestly, I have never deployed before SAN boot.

Are there best practices for SAN boot? Should I ask one number of logic unit for all the ESXi host operating system? or should I ask 10 LUNS 10 ESXi hosts?

What will be the size of the LUN that is recommended for the host ESXi (1 or 10 OS) operating system

Should I ask a separate logical unit number for ESXi OS?

    Hi game ago,.

    Using iSCSI or FC?

You can read the Documentation for vSphere on boot ESXi of FC SAN, iSCSI or FCoE:

Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.5 - boot ESXi SAN Fiber Channel

VSphere 5.5 - boot ESXi with FCoE Software Documentation Centre

5.5 vSphere Documentation Centre - using ESXi with iSCSI SAN

Make sure that your cards HBA/iSCSI and tables/storage support boot from SAN/iSCSI

Yes, you will have to ask that a LUN separated for your ESXi 10 hosts means LUN 10 (some provider requires LUN ID 0).

Don't forget to hide only the start host LUN, boot boot from SAN LUN must be masked exclusively to their host.

The host can obtain the wrong identity an incorrect LUN then you configure single initiator zoning in trunk of SAN.

The Emulex, QLogic BIOS can become insensitive, if several other initiators are in the same area and you try to select a LUN to start.

For the requirements of LUNS, you can prepare LUN ~ 6 GB for each such logic unit number as described in the Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.5 - Configuration hardware ESXi

Storage for a 5.5 ESXi Installation requirements

Installing ESXi 5.5 requires a boot device is a minimum of 1 GB in size.

When booting from a local disk or SAN/LUN iSCSI, a 5.2 GB drive is necessary to allow for the creation of the VMFS volume and a scratch 4 GB partition on the boot device.
