HP Envy 700-430QE: the BIOS changes made by windows 8.1 without my knowledge

I am currently having dual boot in my office so that I can login to 8.1 Windows or Ubuntu Linux. Everything works well except something very strange is happening. In my BIOS - boot order through Windows. Even if I load ubuntu first, then Windows boot loader. First time it works... it over ubuntu... later if I opt to go for windows... windows simply modifies this sequence such that windows boot manager will be loaded first, then ubuntu... whereas if I opt for ubuntu it works normally.

It seems that windows does not want to live in peace with other operating systems.

Windows should not update the BIOS settings in the first place.

Background:

I installed Ubuntu LTS 14.04 on a partition of an external drive connected to my HP desktop computer.

Secure boot is disabled; QuickStart is disabled; Legacy boot is disabled. When I boot Ubuntu and reboot into Ubuntu, grub-efi allows me to choose if I want Ubuntu or Windows. However, if I go back to Windows and restart, Windows always changes my boot order, placing ubuntu last in the list. I have to always manually change my settings for UEFI and put Ubuntu on Windows, if I want to come back to Ubuntu. This seems to be too much work. Is it possible to keep windows do this?

Working with HP for the past 2 days... all... tried re-installing Linux and Windows too but no help. HP support trying to find an excuse so they can find some basis does not help me.

AshuSharmalnia, welcome to the forum.

I don't know why this is happening.  However, I strongly suggest you to use a second drive for Ubuntu.  I double started with Ubuntu for years; never with Win 8.1.  I found that by using a second drive for Ubuntu solved all my problems similar to what you are experiencing.  In addition, www.ubuntuforums.org is a must for all those who use Ubuntu.  The members are extremely useful and not very well know the operating system.

Note: This is not normally a problem dealing with the HP Customer Service.  They deal with software and HP components.

    Hi there @BobMarley

I understand you are looking for assistance for the recovery of the BIOS by using the shortcut, or by using a USB key. I'm happy to help you with this.

Here are two documents for you to check. Of course, the first is specific to desktop computers and covers the shortcut key. The other property that for laptops also includes a section on the use of a USB device.

HP Notebook PC - restore BIOS

Also on the support forums, there is a process described by @HaggisCat, you can find of use in the preparation of a USB flash drive. You will need to have the correct BIOS softpaq to go with it.

  • HP Envy 700-430qe PC: Installation of SSD

I just bought a HP Envy 700-430qe PC and want to install a new 256GB Solid State drive.
    (1) can I just use the factory reset HP recovery option to install OEM Windows 8.1 on this operating system? Since the splash screen?
    (2) otherwise, what happens if I first install Windows 7 on SSD? I could then use the HP factory reset to clean install Windows 8.1? From the desktop?
    (3) or could you point me to a tutorial on installing a SSD using the OEM 8.1 operating system?

Apparently, many people have this issue, but I can't find an answer with a reliable consensus.

    Hello

You can use the external HP recovery media to install a new factory on the SSD system. It is the recommended approach.  Just follow the posted HP recovery procedures.  These extra HP posted articles will also be beneficial.  Read these articles before beginning the process.  Maybe twice would be wise.

  • Inspiron 15 and Ubuntu 14.04: parameters of the BIOS change removes partion "ubuntu".

    Inspiron 15 3551

    BIOS Rev A00

    14.04 Ubuntu preinstalled by Dell.

My laptop is brand new. I went through the initial setup in 15 minutes approximately. This has worked well. I rebooted several times without problem. At this point, the boot options are (if I hit F12 at startup):

Tittle: Startup Mode is set to: UEFI with legacy OPROM: secure boot: off

    THE LEGACY OPTIONS:

    Hard drive

    UEFI OPTIONS:

    PEBOOT

    Ubuntu

    HDD1 - OS UEFI (TOSHIBA )

Please note that I never really used the start menu. I just use the default value.

After a few days, I tried to change how the function keys worked, so I restarted and is gone the BIOS, change this setting, then choose 'save changes and "Reset". Restarted the laptop, but couldn't find the good disk (or partition, or whatever - not sure of the exact terminology). A flashed on the screen error: couldn't open '\EFI\BOOT\fallback.efi': 14

Then the only choice I give myself is to boot from the recovery partition, forcing me to do a reinstall full - 15 minutes more loss of all data.

If I hit F12 at startup while the laptop is in this State, the boot options are as above, except lack the "ubuntu" option, as follows:

    THE LEGACY OPTIONS:

    Hard drive

    UEFI OPTIONS:

    PEBOOT

    HDD1 - OS UEFI (TOSHIBA )

I ran the ePSA assessment system, and it shows no problem.

This problem is reproducible. I've walked through the entire sequence 3 times.

So, what gives? How can I change the BIOS settings without losing my OS partition?

    Thank you

    Joel

Today I received my 3551 Dell with ubuntu.  I am facing a similar situation.  If inherited boot mode, then something happens to the boot process for the uefi firmware.  I'm trying to understand uefi starting the process as well as the Partion of EFI (ESP) system works.   A good place is-

    www.happyassassin.NET/2014/01/25/UEFI-boot-how-does-that-actually-work-then/

Once something bad happens recovery dell comes into play and reinstall everything.

Another problem that I face is that the process to create a recovery on a usb flash drive media fails. I used different usb pen drives but runs aground with each of them.  The recovery flash drive me would be useful if the computer is required to be returned to factory State.   Please inform your experience with it.  I wonder what partition used by the dell recovery program.

Also inform if drivers for Windows are hidden somewhere on the hard drive.

    Thank you.

  • Want to 700 * 430qe: install the cache disk on Envy 700-430qe

I have a 700-430qe with a MSI MS-7826 version want a motherboard that I can't get a 64 GB msata half board to work into the tiny slot.

He currently works very well with the small wireless card install, but not with a surfboard msata in.  I am wanting to use the housing as a cache drive instead of wireless.

Has anyone else experience this problem?  And also, no I want to switch to the DSS, I want just the mini slot to work with a mini ssd.

This can not make any sense, but the problem was that I must have no less than 200 MB of unallocated space at the end of my main hard drive which will be accelerated.

After that I did the software suddenly gave me the option as it is supposed to.  I left the unallocated space just in case there remains open for some reason any.   I was surfing the net and someone else had the same problem and it's the soluton.  The only thing is that no reason was as to why do or why it works.

If you can understand that you could let me know cause he shouldn't have made all the difference.

I did research on the problem and discovered that the issue was "the BIOS corruption failure" according to the information on the link below:

    http://support.HP.com/us-en/document/c01732674/

I tried to recover the BIOS using an external storage device by following the instructions at the link below:

    http://support.HP.com/us-en/document/c02693833

But it did not work. The lights keep flashing. I have my files b.SC. thesis on the computer and their need for pronto. (If not my life is pretty well made)

I also couldn't find the files for version 10 of Windows (64-bit) to my laptop, so I tried with one I downloaded from another site and I got a BIOS of Windows 8.1 HP site.

Is there anyway I can fix it soon or get my files as soon as possible. Help, please!

Have you ever updated the BIOS before?

If you have, you should be able to recover the BIOS using the Windows key + key B method.

All holding the key Windows + B button down, press the power button and wait to see if the laptop responds with a message of recovery of the BIOS on screen.

As my wife continued his mastery, I insisted on his recording of his files periodically to our home network NAS.

You can remove the hard drive and connect it to a desktop computer to get the files from it. You can connect the hard drive to a USB to sata cable to connect it to a laptop.   Instructions to access the disk by opening the back door are on page 42 of the maintenance and service guide. The hard drive is part replaceable by the user, so you don't have to worry about voiding the warranty.

  • HP Envy 700-074 model BIOS corruption, or bug, etc.

    Hello

My name is Patrick Barker, and I'm an analyst of the blue screen of death core Dump. During the last week, I ran into two users having a HP Envy 700-074 computer and experience the same exact bug check. The first time I met such a bug check, I imagined that the user may have simply received a system with a bad BIOS, things like this happen in computers all the time. Well, the user contacted HP and replaced it with the exact same model course, and he had the same problem.

Right at that time, I discovered another user knows exactly the same problem as the previous user. With a consistency like this, I wonder if there is a corruption of the BIOS and/or the bug associated with this particular model?

What is happening is that there is a frequency of verification of bug ACPI_BIOS_ERROR (a5) .

This bug check indicates that the BIOS Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) computer is not fully compliant with the ACPI specification.

    Error checking A5, {1000, 0, 80001000, 25}

The 1st setting has always been far 1000.

    1000 = ACPI_BIOS_USING_OS_MEMORY.

ACPI has been a fatal error during the processing of a region of memory operation. The region of operation memory tried memory card which has been attributed to the use of the OS.

This bug check usually appears in these 2 scenarios:

1 BIOS bug / damaged and must be resolved with an update or go back to the manufacturer.

    2 Rootkit (not very common).

In our case, it is #1. Exactly, what is happening? I can't be quite too sure due to having to have a version controlled ACPI.sys to debug such a question and with what is happening on another system user, I won't use them as guinea pigs. However, this seems a general problem from what I can tell about this model BIOS. For reference, a BIOS update is not currently available for this specific model, so not quite sure that the end user can do, especially if their systems of replacement of the same model have the same question over and over again.

Why I write this here? Well, on the one hand, I can't find a place to contact HP and / r supports directly without really own a HP machine. So, with that said, two questions:

    1. is there a way to contact HP directly on this issue?

I recently changed on a motherboard in an Aurora R4 and now it will save some changes to the BIOS, but not others. For example, he remembers the time and if I set a supervisor password, but remember changes to the boot order.

  • HP ENVY 700-049 will be not updated to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0 x 20018

I recently bought a HP Envy, office 700-049 and have updated to the most recent Windows 8.  I re-downloaded and installed all the drivers for Windows 8 listed on the support page.  I disabled the LAN wireless in Windows (no way to do it in the BIOS I can say).  After that, I went to the App Store Windows and ran the 8.1 update.  The machine restarts and begins to set up the devices, but stops before the end with the SYSTEM_THREAD EXCEPTION NOT_HANDLED error.

    On reboot I give myself

    0xC1900101 - 0 x 30018

It appears in Google... and I tried common recommendations (install updates, install the latest driver, disable WLAN)... y at - it additional suggestions or I'll just have to hang tight on MS to fix this?

My wrist is tired of bouncing over the shortcut bar. :-)

    Kind regards

Obviously, make sure you have the latest drivers and updates installed... but I managed to get through there.

I'm pretty sure that the Ralink Wireless card is the culprit.

In addition to the steps I have described here above I have disabled the integrated graphics card.  Also, I was going through a KVM.  I hooked the mouse, keyboard and monitor directly in... using the graphic adapter PCIx.   But I suspect that the following was "the miracle."

I had a set of screwdrivers on a small scale and a pair of pliers and took the Ralink wireless out.  It's just "above" where is the PCIx graphic card.  This screw was really in there... Please be very careful not not to strip out.  Once the screw is out, it appears out of the slot.  I just hid it near bays of drive.

With the offline wireless the 8.1 update succeeded.

A question related to the following message on my HP computer:
    -----------------------------
HP has not tested this PC with Windows 8.1
For this reason, HP is unable to update providence instructions or Windows 8.1 drivers.
You can now lose stability and basic functionality if you try to update your system.

But my computer is always busy preparing the update and guard asks me to do the 8.1 update.

So can I install Windows 8.1 safely on this computer? Or how to turn off the update?

We appreciate your comments and advice.

    GuyterB1964, welcome to the forum.

I do not understand these messages.  Here is the download page for software and driver for the computer.  As you can see, all the drivers for win 8.1 are listed.  They would not list them as much as they have not been tested.  I see no reason not to do the update.

  • HP ENVY 700-210xt: how to reinstall after upgrade windows 10

I bought a HP ENVY 700 - 210xt delivered with Windows 8.1 and included a recovery for the same partition.  At one point last year, I used the free update of Microsoft to take the system up to 10 Windows.  As far as I know, it has no effect on the recovery partition.  Now, I met a hard drive problem, where the system will not start or recover.  My hypothesis is that I need to reinstall from scratch, but I have some problems.

    • If I order the HP recovery discs, they will be for Windows 8.1, but not my upgrade to Windows 10 invalidated the original license key?
    • If I get somehow 8.1 Windows reinstalled with the original key, can I still the free update me for Windows 10 of Microsoft?  I guess that their records show that I've already updated.
    • If I can't get this path to work, is there a direct way to return to Windows 10?  As part of the upgrade, I've never seen a new license key, but maybe it was and I never saw him.

    Thanks for any help!

  • Recognized by the BIOS but not by Windows 7 disks

I have 4 internal installed hard disks that worked well up until the other day.  The first is my main C: drive.  The second is my main data with several patricians disc. Then, I have two drives more who serve backup online and archive.

When that I start my computer, the BIOS reports all four drives are present, but for some reason any Windows 7 seems not be recognizing the last two.  They are not classified in management of the discs, even on a new analysis and won't come when I try to scan for missing devices using Device Manager, where they are also not listed.

Someone at - it ideas why this might be?

    Hi enormouse affect,

    1. you did it any software / hardware on the computer before this problem past?

    2. What is the number of brand and model of the computer?

There are several possible reasons that the hard drive is not recognized.

    ·         Missing Chipset drivers

    ·         Hardware failure

    ·         It is an IDE drive, and it is in the wrong state (master / slave)

    ·         It is disabled in the bios

Determine if the hard drives Sata or IDE. Go into the bios and see if the disks are disabled by accident. If you have verified all of this, and the drive is still not recognized, download the latest drivers from the website of the manufacturer of your motherboard chipset. Try to change the mode from AHCI to IDE in the bios.

Note: Changing the BIOS / semiconductor (CMOS) to complementary metal oxide settings can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the configuration of the BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Changes to settings are at your own risk.
