  I noticed that my laptop had some problems, for example; When I download things, they don't work or connect to the internet; the icons on my screen family has disappeared; so I reset the phone but now it asks for my product key. I don't have and I left the laptop package in another country and my family thoght it wasn't important so they threw. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to do.

  If it is a laptop Windows 8 license key is built into the BIOS. The fact that it asks for a key indicates something wrong in the BIOS info. The key or other system pertinent information such as a serial is missing/corrupted. Most likely, you will need to contact HP for a service - or at least ask the recovery media. But recovery media may very well also fail if missing BIOS Info as series, etc.

  You will have to contact HP support in the /region country in that the laptop was bought.

  The product key that is embedded in the BIOS may not work with the version of Windows 8 Pro.

  Windows 7 is pre-installed on my computer, How can I find the product key?

  The product key is located on the COA sticker attached to the bottom of your laptop or in the battery compartment. In rare cases it can be found also in the memory compartment. For systems of the Tower, look at the top or the side of the system unit. It looks like the following:

  

  If the certificate of authenticity (COA) label is damaged or letters or not readable, you will need to consider the following options:

  • Use a digital camera to capture an image of the COA and enlarge him on your computer.

  You can make INSTALL CLEAN Windows 8.1 update on your laptop if it was pre installed with Windows 8, then Option 1 in this tutorial:

  Select the edition / the correct version of Windows came with your laptop (for example. Windows 8.1 language core 64-bit edition is pre installed OS in my machine), while you download the ISO file after downloading the media creation tool.

  Additional drivers can be downloaded from your support page and copied on an another USB and installed to your laptop after installing the OS.

  I bought this PC in July 2011 and it is out of warranty.  After that of being harassed at level to Windows 10 months I decided to do it, but rather than the upgrade, I did a clean install from the laptop was malfunctioning.  I read on the Microsoft site that we could do it as long as they have Windows product key for Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 that was already installed on the machine.  I wrote that down with the Windows ID (different number).

  I've updated by downloading Windows 10 to a USB key and then the installation.  Seemed to work very well (I think that I entered my product in the process ID).  Now, a few weeks later I get a message that I need to "activate windows".  I called MIcrosoft after it could not activate using the ID that I and after 30 minutes on the phone they me said my Windows product ID and both are my "invalid" Windows product key  I would call HP and get this sorted - I have the original order number and Microsoft said that's all I need for HP to help me - but I am out of warranty and apparently help me unless I pay them $60.  Another alternative is to buy a new copy of Windows 10 and pay MIcrosoft money.

  I am shocked, because I'm simply doing what Microsoft has been harassment to me.

  BTW, the PC seems to work fine except the message to activate windows.  I guess that another option is to do nothing.

  Available for the free upgrade until the end of July 2016, according to the latest rules from Microsoft Windows 10. Thus, you will be able to spend to Win 10 If you want. I'm not a fan of win 10, but if you want to upgrade to it I personally recommend the ISO for Win 7 upgrade method to win 10-

  You can get the key, the only thing is that you need to log a ticket with HP to get the same.

  You will need to install the OS to the factory and provide the last 5 characters of the current generic key of the PC and the ID of the product, as well as other information such as your address and so on.

  Let me welcome you on the HP forums!

  I read your post on your question of activation of Win10 and wanted to help.

  In Win10, the product key is stored in the motherboard UEFI firmware.  Because you're not change that, you risk to disable.

  In addition, the activation key is stored on servers for Activation of MS, and that information are NOT linked to the HARD or SDD drive you are using.  I can say this because once I got Win10 works as I wanted, I migrated there a disk HARD of a DDI and nothing has changed - except the performance is much improved!
