  I just thought it was something weird style in Windows 8 (which I love), but like... all the icons are places now. I CAN'T find anything online for this, am pretty tech savvy (but lost in windows 8 but am learning) and did a fresh install of 8 with no problems and I love it. Then, I made an installation on my laptop last night (do not both installed at the same time) and noticed there is no places and icons. Now, I was told these bad boys are stored in the form of a police and perhaps it has disappeared (I fall my fonts back into the computer and press Yes/OK all had replaces)... Maybe I'll try to copy the fonts from my laptop on my desk and see if that fixes it. I'll let people know. ANYWAY. For those who have a lot of software downloaded clouds (cloud creative Adobe, steam games, etc.) and use a lot of software, AND who want to customize their OS will know that reformatting after hours of setting up a machine is out of the question so reinstall windows for me is NOT a "solution" 20 minutes as rejoice, and as much as I love the modern user interface , or subway or some funky some icons do not justify a reinstall...

  I'm not sure of what is a record, but it's useful information.
  I think that I fixed it... As I discovered, icons in the UI or modern metro or start menu, or whatever you want to call it (microsoft critical ones) are stored as a font. When he saw this problem, I was also able to remember I did a cleaning complete post install (which is usual) with CCleaner from piriform.
  so... He doesn't have to know that something he thinks to remove is a file cache of christiane or something used by this icon policy to make this system work. I won't use it again until it has been updated several times.
  Now... I fixed that by copying each font in my fresh install of windows 8 on my laptop (because I have NO IDEA what police these icons are in) and then pasting in c:\Windows\Fonts. After a restart, my mail and everything else that I noticed are back and no longer just circles or squares...
  If anything this helps other people with this problem fix the question a little easier and I can't reinstall their whole system.
  My advice to those who are not able to do what I've done is to goto a futureshop, or big box computer laptop / desktop sales store with a USB key and simply copy the fonts from there and then go home. If you live near one, or are almost one a day, or there is a close working it can fix the hours you headaches or extra work.
